More Scooby-Doo redesigning.

Daphne is especially important for me to re-design, not only physically but personality-wise, as I haven't liked any adaptation of her so far. I need her to be active, fearless and weapon-savvy. The muscles of the group, because Lord knows, it ain't gonna be Scooby or Shaggy.

Daphne Blake, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers (C) Hanna-Babera

I wouldn't completely dis Shaggy or Scooby. Plenty of times they've shown they can be brave when it counts-and have suprising feats of strength too-Fred even used them as jacks one time when he changed the Mystery Machine's tires.

Awesome redesign on Daphne here. She certainly doesn't look like the sort of lady who wastes her time swooning over Fred like she has in recent versions. That's my one problem with the Mystery Incorporated series: Daphne and Fred, sorry I just didn't get it.

Their relationship seems to me superficial and only there for 'check-mark'-reasons. You know - what does a show require; a girl, check. An animal, check. A romance, check. Not particularly well-thought out. Wouldn't mind the romance part, but so far, no rendition has done a good job of it.
Anyhoo, thanks

This is great, I love the poses and expressions.  Your re-designs for the Scooby-Doo gang are definitely the best I've seen so far.

This is an interesting personality for Daphne (I'm a big classic and What's New Fan [courtesy of my classical cartoon fan father] and also have a soft spot for Pup) and one I could see her having in an AU where cartoons are living breathing beings and usually follow a script for their shows...and now I want to use something like this in my AU of the aforementioned; do you mind? You'd get inspiration credit.

Yes, absolutely

Anything to upgrade her personality, and I'm happy if people take inspiration from it.

I'd be delighted if you do, and I'de very much liked to be linked to it, once it's done!

Thanks.

Will do though just to let you know, I'll be doing a whole bunch of other animated stuff too as well as deconstructing the concept of the Scrappy; being a Scrappy (or the child of one) basically gives you a disease that renders you bed-ridden for a week every month.

The-Thirteenth-Ghost [2014-02-12 02:34:25 +0000 UTC]

This does remind me of that New Scooby-Doo Mysteries show that other person mentioned, where it was just Daphne, Shaggy and the Doos. Daphne was the leader there, and also seemed more resourceful. But, getting back on-topic, I'd love to see a show with Daphne like this. It's very interesting and would be a major improvement over what they have her doing now, anyways (whether it's the damsel business or drama over her and Fred's relationship).

Oh my God, all that drama... just... no! It bugged me in some of the later adaptations where the stories with her always revolved around Fred. Give her personality, give her passions, give her more depth than the 'annoying girlfriend'.

I want her to be passionate about something; I don't mind her being a rich girl, that would be totally cool, and she is allowed to be self-concerned, that can create for some interesting personality-traits, but more depths. Or even better, develop her, make her evolve - start out as a slightly annoying self-obsessed rich girl and then make her change for the better.

There are so many ways to go with her, and I really wished they had taken some more interesting routes for her.

If that makes sense

I just don't get why these later adaptations just choose to have Daphne obsess over Fred and not much else. It's a step down from the original series, even! There were subtle hints of them being a couple with them dancing together and pairing off together to look for clues, but they always focused on the mystery at hand, never at Daphne getting jealous whenever Fred looked at girls. I agree with everything you stated.

TopHatTurtle In reply to The-Thirteenth-Ghost [2014-02-14 00:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! I mean, she never seems to be the least interested in mystery and solving problems... then what is the point of having her! No matter what they do with the characters, the basics MUST be that they all have a passion for mystery (well, Scooby and Shaggy have a passion for scooby-snacks, but it still works ), but no... never...

Which is why that spark MUST be started in her - yay for more mystery-passionate Daphne, and less drama-Fred-Daphne!

Daphne is a lot of fun to draw this way - much more modern, much more upbeat and less pretty-face.

That would have made the New Scooby Mysteries (Shaggy, Daphne, Scooby and Scrappy) from the mid-1980s much cooler.

Well a do-over in personality is what they really missed though, but it IS a lot of fun to play around with their designs ^^

Huh, that's an interesting and also satisfying take on her.  I like the idea that she has more of a "mover & shaker" disposition and takes a direct "I don't give a shit!" approach.  And, I'm glad to see that Shaggy and Scoob are kinda cowering behind her in their typical reluctant manner.  I love the detail that went into their clothing!  It looks realistic and believable.

TopHatTurtle In reply to IndyHorizon [2014-02-09 01:33:48 +0000 UTC]

I like to think that she's still the one getting caught the most, but in this case it has more to do with her taking full charge and storming into battle, rather than her being the damsel-in-distress. A Hell of a lot more satisfying.
