I’ve been listening to a lot of Ayreon this winter, so it was high time I did some fanart. And because sci-fi is not my cup of tea, as you may have noticed, I put Ayreon in the middle of the image and banned his visions of the future to the edges of the picture, so I could more or less stay in my comfort zone, haha.By the way: the Forever in her tube would be Floor Jansen’s Forever. I don’t know why. I just decided. I mean, because, FLOOR JANSEN.
Very loose references for practically everything. The colours are an undistinguishable mashup of my limited palette of drawing ink which I had lying around, some acrylics, and the inevitable watercolours. Mostly my beloved liquid phthalo blue.
For everybody who has not a single clue what this picture is about and what I’m talking about: Ayreon is a music project by Dutch Rock-/Metal-Mastermind Arjen Lucassen. All albums are concept albums and tell a story, most of them a continuous one. That story is about aliens called the Forever, things going boom, genetic fuckups, many awesome voices, and a blind bard/seer named Ayreon who lives in 6th century Britain at King Arthur’s court, among other things. If that doesn’t make you curious, I can’t help you!
Today’s music suggestion should be obvious, too. I mean, ANYTHING Ayreon, though The Awareness and Eyes of Time obviously fit best. Okay okay and The Sixth Extinction for the background.

I’m glad to hear that! There’s not much visual material to work with (I mean, actually, only the booklets), so I’m glad if I manage to make my Ayreon fanart recognisable as fanart to others

I didn’t even realize that Arjen announced a new album, but that’s good news! Did he say anything about whether it will also be connected to the Forever plot or will it be something unrelated once more like The Theory of Everything?

Dude!!!!! www.arjenlucassen.com/ay8/ It's either a Prequel/Sequel to 01, or both!!! Involves the "Planet A". a being called "TH-1" (Which Arjen confirmed as meaning "TransHuman-1", it seems the Elctric Castle shows up once again, and the cast of characters are Scientists off on a space mission for a new home. Points to a prequel, but there are some lines in these vocal teasers that imply there will be bits that happen AFTER 01. I'm soooo hyped! He also announced the first Ayreon live shows, in the Netherlands, and they sold out within hours! Sadly, I'm in the U.S

I’m really jealous now, I wanted to go and see The Theater Equation with a few friends, but we didn’t get any tickets (plus, all except my best friend have pretty much turned their backs on me, which is a different story…). I’m looking forward to the DVD release, so I can at least imagine what it might have been like 
Glad you enjoyed it, although I don’t really doubt that the performance was probably awesome
Also, illustrator for metal bands would be my dream job…

Yeah, somebody has got to do the artwork, but somehow there’s always somebody else doing that… for example, Arjen already has Jef Bertels of course (who is amazing!). Plus, I’d probably have to do all the artwork for every Metalband there is if I wanted to cover my living expenses that way… I suppose that would be unfair

I like that one, too, but actually more because of the Line-up than the songs - although Beneath the Waves is one of my fav Ayreon songs.
Hehe, it's so much fun to discuss Ayreon with someone! I don't know anyone else who likes hit besides the friend that got me into it once.

Depending on my mood, I enjoy Age of Shadows, Liquid Eternity, Newborn Race (for some reason, I love Bob Catley’s part in it), River of Time and The Sixth Extinction most; but actually, there are parts in every song which I really like.
…Simone needs higher exposal than Web of Lies, though

Man sieht es dem Bild nicht an, dass SciFi nicht Deine Teetasse ist 
Am besten gefällt mir aber trotzdem der Barde. Ich finde seinen Gesichtsausdruck richtig gut eingefangen. Bei solchen Visionen würde ich wahrscheinlich genauso aus der Wäsche schauen

Nicht der Farbton ist das Problem, sondern der Umstand, dass ich sämtliche eventuellen Details in Tinte ertränkt habe

Der krasse Farbkontrast ist super, und die Sci-Fi-Elemente finde ich sehr gelungen, auch wenn du sagst, dass das nicht so deins ist.

Das sieht doch nur detailliert aus, weil es so klein ist
Und doch haben mich die zerstörten Gebäude sowie die Forever in ihrem Glas ganz schön aufgehalten. Daran merkt man, dass es nicht mein Ding ist

Aufwendig sieht's in jedem Fall aus, keine Frage. Aber ich kenne das Problem, bei sowas verlässt mich auch regelmäßig die Inspiration.

Ich glaube, selbst Design ist Erfahrungssache. Für Fantasykleidung wären mir sicherlich tausend Details eingefallen, aber sci-fi? Äh… sinnlose Kabel und leuchtende Buttons? Die 60er lassen grüßen? Neee…
Da war einfach kein Repertoire in meinem Kopf.

Das stimmt wohl. Irgendwo muss das Repertoire ja herkommen ...
Meins setzt sich aus jeder Menge Filmen und Serien zusammen, das merke ich immer wieder, wenn ich einen älteren Film nochmal anschaue und mir klar wird, wo die Inspiration für dies oder jenes herkam.

Ich glaube das ist ein Bild, dass man stundenlang ansehen müsste, um alle Details zu finden. Aber so viel Zeit habe ich leider nicht...
Aber die heftigen Farbunterschiede finde ich hier im Bild spannend und sehr schön.
Die sanften Farben bei dem Mann und dann das doch sehr schillernde Blau dahinter.

So viele Details sind da gar nicht – vielleicht lassen die hohen Kontraste das Bild komplexer wirken als es ist. ich habe mal wieder nur rumgeschmiert

Das ging jetzt doch sehr schnell, ich bin beeindruckt.
Ein sehr schönes Bild voller Gegensätze- so empfinde ich es zumindest.
Die Kontraste geben dem Motiv eine gewisse Tiefe. Das hört sich jetzt komisch an, aber ich weiß nicht, wie ich es anders beschreiben soll.

Ja, es ging dann doch schneller als ich dachte. Am meisten aufgehalten hat mich mal wieder das Acryl
Die Sepiatinte hat auch ganz gut reingeknallt… ursprünglich wollte ich den Hintergrund insgesamt noch dunkler haben, aber dann gefiel er mir irgendwie und ich wollte ihn nicht mehr verwaschen… und so kam dann eben ein sehr kontrastreiches Bild dabei raus.
Aber Hauptsache Ayreon (der verwirrt guckende Blondie im Vordergrund) sticht noch raus
