Description

Final piece for design and composition class.

I really could have done more with it, and there are so many anatomy aspects that are bothering me, but that’s my fault for leaving it for the last minute.

Much thanks to XIIIHOUNDS  for giving me a hand with the dude <3

I would really cut back on the blur of the guy in front. Firstly, I just am not personally a fan of the use of it in illustrations, and second at this angle, even in film logic it would not work. Honestly I would just leave him without the blur. Also, it might help to enlarge him more and give a little more distance between him and the wolves. Oh, and the little sheen on the sword looks like a lens glare type effect. I know you mentioned anatomy, but as far as I can see the only issue is that his upper arm is a bit short, which seems like an easy enough fix.
Sorry to go a little crazy on the crit, but I just really like this piece and the way you drew the wolves so I would love to see you perhaps do an even better version in the future. I really love how fluffy the wolves look, and the lighting for the most part is pretty stellar. I am always in awe of people with a talent for drawing animals.

Hope you are not bothered by my addition of critique... too much art school in my brain man.

you know you couldn't just make him do a better version... because it is beautiful to look at right now, you have no right to point out his mistakes. Art isn't about perfection it is about making something very beautiful and attractive, actually art doesn't really have mistakes it is just your capability to do/draw something beautiful.  so you can't just point out mistakes in  his art, cuz judging from your art to his no offense but your's even needs improvement, when i saw your gallery i even saw some anatomy mistakes but who cares right? it's still beautiful! i know that you like this piece of art but how come you want it to be better? i like it just the way it is right now

Because I go to art school? Just like he does? Art gets critics, it's a thing that happens. I don't dislike the version he has now, but I saw room for improvement.

Also I haven't posted on here in years. Whether or not my art is of the same quality does not mean I don't have a good eye for being improved.

This is why I stopped commenting on dA at all. For some reason a lot of people here are terrified of critique which is just counter productive.

How wouldn't it work in a cinematographic way? They shift between focuses all the time in films. It's used a lot to create depth or draw your attention between an important object/person closer to the camera and another that's farther away?  Not applying the blur, to me at least, seemed to kill a lot of the depth I wanted to create, and drew the viewer's attention to the man, rather than the wolf, who I wanted to be the main focal point.
I did try enlarging, but it ended up covering too much of the second wolf on the right or creating odd tangents, which I didn't want either, so I stuck with an in-between that worked.
The sheen on the sword wasn't a lens flare, but I was kind of going for that effect. Even though it wouldn't be plausible lighting, I wanted the viewer to eventually notice it there.
The upper arm looks odd because of the angle he's standing at gyazo.com/15e1acbc33ecb3f56492… it's not straight, it's bent up and towards you, which gives off the impression that it's short.

I do appreciate critique though, so thank you for the feedback!

A fair point. I still feel like you could pull back a little on the blur, but I respect your artistic integrity. Lord knows I've disagreed with some professors in the past.

And thank you for being cool about the crit! I get really worried after some bad responses in the past so I was hoping you wouldn't be offended.

Even if it ~was~ inspired by "The Grey" (which I too know little about), the awesome, amazing talent that this was made with is a standalone from that, so really, the comparison is of no consequence. The art, the scene and the style is bloody amazing. <3

Very nice image. Don´t let the comments about the similarities to The Grey get to you. Some people think as soon as they see a similarity to something else the artist has ripped off whatever it is they find it similar to. The thing is that everything has been done to death so originality doesn´t really exist anymore. You can look at anything visual and find stuff it reminds you of even if the artist wasn´t thinking of anything else in particular while creating the piece. Of course you can make stuff that feels fresh and original but if you looked hard enough you´d find stuff out there that has already done that stuff too.

i guess their can be many different ways but one could be having the separate layer with one image that hasn't been merged with the whole layer yet and Gaussian blur it on Photoshop..
