Description So, some time ago, while I was thinking about the exo skeletal version of Samus Aran's suit that I finished recently, I heard the Ironman was going to be made into a live action movie as well as an animated show.

I basically wanted to see the samething happen to the Ironman suit. Instead of it being power ranger-ish body suit, I would have loved to see the exo-skeletal powered suit. It made more sense to me since that is the only way to retain 9+ headed hero proportion of the character in the real world. Other wise, it would end up being looking very silly like so many live action super hero shows (green goblin from spiderman would be a prime example). Besides, why not try something different for different medium? If it's something like Superman or Batman, I thought there wasn't that much flexibility to alter the design (since they are more of an icon). But, something like Ironman, I thought there was still a room to re-define the design.

Anyways, here is a sketch of the suit with the entrance hatches open for the pilot. Sketched in Photoshop.

So, I know that this is an old image but I was following a trail of images over here on DA, from Samus pics to another, armored and zero suited. I got to admit that the exo-suits designs you came up with were pretty rad and I kinda wish we could have seen them in a bit more angles like references pics. Aha, yeah talking about other artists doing more work on their design when I haven't drawn anything post-able in my gallery in ages, sorry about that. XP

Anyway, now that a couple of years have passed and that the movie came out and even a couple mores of them since then. How do you feel about the design they came up with in the end for the movie. Compare to a more bulky one like here? Do you feel like they stroke a fair balance between power ranger sleek and actual powered armor suits? What about Valerie, the mega suit that he used against the Hulk in the first Avenger movie. Would be curious to hear your opinion on it all a couple years later ^.^

Oh that would actually be a very impressive Iron Man design!
I mean, look at all the transformer designs and the size/electronics used to run it proportions make sense. Then you get to Iron man and there's just no way it can really fit with all the components, especially the screens inside the helmet. It's just too little space.

But I really love your design at this! It makes perfect sense and I can actually see it in action in my mind.

while it would be REALLY awesome if something like that would go through, the sad reality of it is that fans would tear it apart before it even got halfway through the storyboarding phase.

There's one thing about comic book fans - they are adamant about their fictional works.
Though there IS a suit that works in a similar manor that iron man has - it'd be an interesting thing to see you draw, too, if you ever consider it. it's called the Hulk Buster armor. it was specifically designed to stop the hulk (and his smashing)

Well, think a moment. If the suit is designed basically to be a wearable jet, wouldn't it need to be as conservative and sleek as possible?

torokun In reply to Maj2oo7 [2008-12-04 19:52:03 +0000 UTC]

I suppose so.

Like I said, I was thinking more of the opening and powered mech suit gimick than the design itself...

maybe I should revisit this someday.

later than hell, just found it and I think you would be very happy about iron monger in the film. They pretty much did just this in it. Stane "character" gets inside the chest cavity of the suit and rides around inside rather than being the machine. Excellent detail man.

In as few words as possible...I love it. The expanded version? Ironman was already one of my favorite superheroes...and this idea of a larger, exoskeletal version of the suit is magnificent. I'd fear to think of what he may look like if you adapted it into a Hulk Buster variation. O.O Once again, fantastic. ^^

Sir, it has been..years...since I have been so awakened by a conceptual piece of art as this and your samus-exosuits. It gives me some hope that there arent just 2 scales of mecha - power ranger and Gundam ^_^

One of the reasons I never explored this scale in the past was (and it still seems awkward) is the way in which the appendages are housed: I find it hard to picture the Arm and Leg being able to move freely within the Upper Arm and Thigh - in your depictions does the knee/elbow actually bend while the suit is closed?

as for the ironman Movie - it may be too late to influence a drastic change in the costume Department, but you may attempt to forward your concept to a couple Movie Magazines: They will be plugged in to the proper channels on some level and at the very least you could see your work end up in the next article about Ironman - who knows!

I must say - this takes it to a new level for me. Thank You.

I suppose with your consent you wouldnt feel it wrong of me to adopt the exo-concept for my own designs? Certainly would solve alot of internal battles for me like 'where do I put the batteries?!'

torokun In reply to Overheal1987 [2007-06-14 07:54:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words.

As I have explained, the legs have multiple joints. And they are grouped into two different units. One for the human inside. And another for the powered suit. Arms, human's elbow becomes the shoulders for the suit. And the humand hand actually ends about where the suit's elbow is. And has an extended limb fomr there.

this piece was sort of a pseudo test for Ironman animation. I noticed that they nicely "barrowed" the extended limb idea for the original suit in the animation... Oh well...

Overheal1987 In reply to torokun [2007-06-14 18:58:18 +0000 UTC]

Well it looks awesom, and Ive alreasy started doing some thumbs to see how I could get some one to fil in there: I still cant quite figure it out

For one, the arms have to bend and rotate to extreme angles: at rest, the user has to bend is arms down in an L-shape. I fixed this with a notion that well - see the armit-Flex on the closed Suit in your painting; I reversed that so instead of being angled at '/' I angle it as '\' To accomodate the users arm inside the suit.

The other problem I have is the leg: its hard to visualise exactly how and where and how much space it has to maneuver in there: In my own sketches, in order to maintan proportion in both the user and exoskeletion I had to place the users knee at the Exo's Hip/Ball join at the hip - but if the suit goes into a high kick for example, that would seem an impossible bend for the user.

If I may be so forward - you couldnt help me out here: just a few cross-section thumbnails of where and how the user sits while the suit is fully enclosed?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

torokun In reply to Overheal1987 [2007-06-15 18:06:40 +0000 UTC]

You are correct about the arm. It's quite an ugly site. But, once you are in the suit, it's not like you will be able to see the arm. So, I am willing to go with it.

I did create a little diagram to explain how the leg works. But, I didn't post it here...
