Description Huntington Beach Pier
About 5 hours into the painting not including the drawing time. It does not look like much work but it is taking me alot longer than I thought it would. I thought I could finish it in 8-9 hours. I dont think that is going to happen now but I am really enjoying this painting.
This is kind of like the two sunset paintings I did but with the blues and reflections of noon. The way the sun plays off the water at this time of day and at this time of year is almost blinding but is as beautiful as any sunset.
The only thing I am worried about is the sand. I dont know how I am going to approach it yet. I was thinking I could get away with being a little more minimalistic and still get the feel I am looking for but I in the end I may have to go in and put in lots of detail. Lets hope not. any advise on painting sand in watercolor would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I never saw this, cause i never looked in your scraps before, but this is really good! If you want to leave the sand the way it is it is okay, but what the other person said was right on, just adding some layering effects wet on wet with some raw siennna and maybe raw umber would be good, and if you spatter use a toothbrush to get some really fine texture effects, I realise this was a painting from long ago so maybe you have finished it, or left it?

I hate to say it but I have yet to finnish this painting. This was the piece I was working on before I started work on my daughters nursery.
I have wanted to finish it but I feel I need to start a few other paintings before I touch this one again. Going in with a cold brush just sounds like a bad idea. I want to get a feeling of the materials again so I dont goof it up. When ever I do get to this painting I will let you know. I will prpbably have some other Q's for you then. Thanks for the help.

How about you like layer different tones of brown and tan and maybe grey, then like flick some of the paint on the canvas to make a splatter effect. Ofcourse you'd have to cover the rest of the canvas. Or what about jabbing the canvas with a paint brush. That would be fun and give it a cool effect. I obviously have no clue what I am talking about...Eh, it was just a thought. Heh, you could glue sand on there. It would give it a nice texture.

Heh, my idiotic ramblings lead to something good. Yays for me! Yeah that splattering idea may mess stuff up, but it would be fun. ^.^

I might use a little of that splatter effect but it always scares me because I have such little control.
Some great ideas. I like the glueing of sand on the paper idea. I probably wont use it on this piece but I am getting ideas for another one now that you mentioned that.
