Would making the tail tuft half-black (the back half), adding darker eyebrow spots (like a black and tan dog's) and a small scar/notch down one nostril be too much?  I can settle for fewer edits.

I hadn't ever thought about that.  Trying to imagine how that would look... and failing.  I dunno, I really like the tlk style of lions, and it occurs to me there's this other eyebrow spot on dogs:
