Description When I was playing regularly in a bluegrass band one of my favorite songs to perform was the Bill Monroe song "Walls of Time" (here performed by Ricky Skaggs... [link] ). This cemetery very much evoked memories of the song for me...

The wind is blowing 'cross the mountain
And down on the valley way below.
It sweeps the grave of my darling
When I die that's where I want to go.

Lord send the angels for my darling
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth love
And come to you when I die.

I hear a voice out in the darkness
It moans and whispers through the pines
I know it must be her a-callin'
I hear her through the walls of time

Lord send the angels for my darling
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth love
And come to you when I die.

Our names are carved upon the tombstone
I promised you before you died
Our love will bloom forever darling
When we rest side by side.

Lord send the angels for my darling
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth love
And come to you when I die.

I looked up my city and I found this! I've been there before, it is a very beautiful place.

It is indeed. Β It seems a bit out of the way, but the way it sits on a hill and if you get there on what I call a "dramatic sky" day you can get some amazing photos.

Why thank you very much. If you look closely at the tombstone in the distance in the center of the image (with the figure pointing to the sky) you'll notice it has kind of an odd hue. That's because the entire base was made of cast zinc.

This is a very interesting cemetery in that the design is tiered. I would love to go back and shoot there on a foggy morning.

You're welcome! Wow, really? I've never heard of a tombstone like that... i wonder if there are very many of them in existence?

Oh, yeah, that would be amazing! I visited a similar cemetery in Missouri once that was located up on a bluff overlooking the Missouri river (i think it was the Missouri river...), and i happened to be there on a day when it was all rainy and foggy. I think that was one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen!

I was thinking of posting a series on zinc gravemarkers. There are not a whole lot of them, but when you see them they really stand out. They usually have a bluish colour, and the detail is quite vivid. They were marketed as "white bronze" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I always used to try and head out to cemeteries on beautiful blue sky days, but have found that the overcast, cloudy, rainy and foggy days really make for the best photographs.

On your enthusiastic recommendation I'll be posting a set of four images of zinc markers - stay tuned...
