Description I took a trip to this area 3 weeks ago and quickly realized the photographic opportunities here. On that trip, trying to save weight in my pack, I opted not to take my tripod as I'd never been there before. I can say in honesty I've never wished for a tripod so bad.

With redemption in my mind I decided I'd get myself back here to properly capture the scene tripod in hand. I took some time off work and found myself at the beginning of the trail-head again. Its a 10 mile trek into the basin and because its part of Utah's wilderness there are no motorized vehicles allowed, either you hike or ride a horse.

Up in the distance just below and to the left of Red Castle is a large lake loaded with trout. 2 miles above and to the right is another even bigger lake with even bigger fish. I was lucky enough to spend 3 days fishing and taking pictures here. Anyone who enjoys great backpacking and stunning scenery would do well to make a trip to Red Castle. In my opinion its the best hike in the Uinta Mountain Range.

Canon 5D. 24-105mm. Circ Polarizer. 3SSGND Filter.

Uinta Wilderness, UTAH.

Great shot - I wouldn't have thought you'd need a tripod to capture it in strong sunlight though?!

Thank you! The tripod is still needed, the polarizer adds another couple of stops and shooting at a small aperture for DOF slows down the shutter speed. This was 1/8 of a second exposure.

This is everything I wish I could accomplish in photography!!!

The back and foreground have equal amounts of brightness and clarity and the colors are awesome. it looks as if I was standing there viewing it myself.

I love it. I wish I could do this. I've had more than one perfect opportunity but either my ability or my camera itself isn't capable of this....

Wow, thank you! The camera does make a difference, but looking for good light and composition is key. Also, this wouldn't be possible without either blending exposures or using filters to balance the exposure. If you have any questions about technique I'll try my best to answer. Thank again!

You are so welcome!! I try my best with what I have but it really just doesn't work so well...
And aah... my camera can't take filters (unless you meant photoshop filters?) And I am unfamiliar with the blending exposures terminology...
Thanks for the tips!

Actually I have a simple question: how did you get the lightning so even, yet preserving all the contrast? It looks incredible and I'd like to learn to use whatever techniques and equipment is needed to shoot like this.

Wonderful picture from lovely Utah, one of the most beautiful states of the States.

There are a couple of ways to do it. In this picture I'm using what's called a Graduated Neutral Density filter, which is a big word for a filter that's darker on top and clear on the bottom. When you put this in front of your lens it darkens the sky to bring it in the same exposure range of the darker foreground. Another method is blending exposures, or HRD.
