Description
*** : CAUTION : ***Please note in the first place that you should PROTECT YOURSELVES from using all mediums, especially for ones having problem(s) with Respiratory system, Hormone system, or other sensitive diseases, as many mediums involved in face-up progress HARMS, from dust allergy to chemical absorption.
(Fully wearing protection equipments makes you looking similar to Darth Vader, Gundum Pilot, WW soldiers in the battle of toxic gas but those equipments help saving your life and the rest.)
***
*** : SPRAYING & THINNER CAUTION : ***
*Spraying any aerosol spray and using thinner MUST BE USED IN EXCELLENT VENTILATION AREA.
*Most aerosol spray, including MSC, will keep on releasing its volatile component for at least 24 hours after applying. I recommend not to bring sprayed piece(s) into closed ventilation space where you're going to spend a period in (including air-con room) within 24 hours or longer after spraying, upon the weather condition. It dried, but not yet stop releasing the volatile.
*As above, doing face-up in closed space (like air-con room or too small window room) is strongly not recommended.
*Avoid touching any chemical medium directly.

SD & BJD FACE-UP TUTORIAL (finally!)
Well, I don't think I would take this long to do a face-up tutorial. (I've spent about 3 and a half months!) May be because of many interruption came. (one of them is VISA documents, tons of!)
Anyway, it's finally finished... but wait, not yet complete all every technique I'd like to share.
There's another 2 pieces I have to add. One is 'Other Techniques' (Solving MSC white coat & Tracing old face features) and another one is 'Tools & Materials Precaution'. These two will be added later. ^_^
Please do not hesitate to leave me your question in the comment if you have. I will be welcome to reply if I could. ^_^
PS. Very large deviation, sorry~!

Hi, wonderful tutorial I have a question though, (well, maybe two): What brand of artist soft pastels do you use? What do you think is the cheapest brand that still provides a nice look for the doll? (ok, three) What would you say should one expect to pay in order to gather the supplies necessary for the first time?
Thanks, and again, great tutorial, beautiful job

For the lips cracks, bottom eyelashes and eyebrows, do you draw them using acrylics or pastels?

I can't thank you enough for this.
I got my doll recently and I couldn't afford the faceup from the company. I've felt extremely guilty for a very long time and have wanted to help him become as beautiful as I think he is already. This covers everything I'm going to need to know and I'm so thankful. My baby thanks you too !

question!!: Is it ok to layer a new face up over the old one? And can i use fake lashes for the lower lashes instead of painting them on?

Great work and awesome tutorial!!
What can I do when apply the pastels and my brush scatters the powder from them all over the face?

tr3is In reply to circle10 [2011-04-27 17:53:11 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! ^_^
Well, the best method is to blow them out. Yes, blowing. You can use something like blower in camera cleaning kit or something similar. If the exceed pastel dust still on the face, try using big soft brush (like mob brush) very, very lightly swap them away.
The tips *bishiecake recommended are very useful indeed. I would like to add that if you are working on light colour, that would be easier to get rid of this problem without getting dirty too easily, but if you are working on darker colour, I recommend you to be calm and apply slowly a small amount of pastel each time. Slowly add a little more until you reach the density you would like. ^_^

bishiecake In reply to circle10 [2011-03-25 00:08:53 +0000 UTC]
just blow on it, works for me : D
here are some tips:
- tap the brush so the extra pastel falls off. less will fall onto the face that way
- use a really soft pastel + soft brushes, that way you can use pastel right from the brush and minimize waste
- if pastel falls on the face, and I blow it off too much, the face starts to look dirty, etc. so keep this in mind.
- make sure your hands are very clean, wash them right away if you get any pastel on them.
hope this helps you and anyone who reads this >w<

Great tutorial! So perfect (: The face-ups on eluts are pricey, but I think I'll be getting my first BJD if I can raise up enough money in time (: (the one I want it only 240 and absolutely gorgeous, but it's only on sale until the 6th of April! :S )
I'll definitely use this if I manage to get him! (:
