*** : CAUTION : ***Please note in the first place that you should PROTECT YOURSELVES from using all mediums, especially for ones having problem(s) with Respiratory system, Hormone system, or other sensitive diseases, as many mediums involved in face-up progress HARMS, from dust allergy to chemical absorption.
(Fully wearing protection equipments makes you looking similar to Darth Vader, Gundum Pilot, WW soldiers in the battle of toxic gas but those equipments help saving your life and the rest.)

*** : SPRAYING & THINNER CAUTION : ***
*Spraying any aerosol spray and using thinner MUST BE USED IN EXCELLENT VENTILATION AREA.
*Most aerosol spray, including MSC, will keep on releasing its volatile component for at least 24 hours after applying. I recommend not to bring sprayed piece(s) into closed ventilation space where you're going to spend a period in (including air-con room) within 24 hours or longer after spraying, upon the weather condition. It dried, but not yet stop releasing the volatile.
*As above, doing face-up in closed space (like air-con room or too small window room) is strongly not recommended.
*Avoid touching any chemical medium directly.

SD & BJD FACE-UP TUTORIAL (finally!)
Well, I don't think I would take this long to do a face-up tutorial. (I've spent about 3 and a half months!) May be because of many interruption came. (one of them is VISA documents, tons of!)
Anyway, it's finally finished... but wait, not yet complete all every technique I'd like to share.
There's another 2 pieces I have to add. One is 'Other Techniques' (Solving MSC white coat & Tracing old face features) and another one is 'Tools & Materials Precaution'. These two will be added later. ^_^
Please do not hesitate to leave me your question in the comment if you have. I will be welcome to reply if I could. ^_^
PS. Very large deviation, sorry~!

It is upon which effect you would like. ^_^
- Adding in pastel, surely the twinkle effect would be blown out by matt finish of the MSC, no doubt about this especially when you are still in progress to further layers. But when adding in pastel, the pearl somehow helps you a smoother blushing.
If you would like to still have a touch of pearl on the surface without losing all of the twinkle, you can blush the pearl alone on the very last layer before glossing and spray a thin layer of MSC. To me, this is not a method I recommend pretty much as thin MSC doesn't do its work well to preserve the pearl. There is another experimental method I have tried using water but it was still in experimental stage, so I cannot say I would recommend it.
- Adding in gloss, it will give you almost the same effect as when you apply human lip gloss to your lips (or other part on the face).
Touch of pearl will definitely give a metallic look. But be careful, pearl you add to the gloss also does its job on thickening the gloss. Applying thin layer like *bishiecake recommend is better. If you would like a honey-drop lips, apply thin layer repeatedly after the previous layer completely dry (if the previous layer still not completely dry, you can apply a new layer by the way, but it will be easy to damage the smooth surface of the previous layer).
Hope this help~ ^_^

I think mixing it with pastels right away gives a better effect
when I added pearl powder on it, it blocked some of the color. I think it's better to put it right away.
Although for gloss, I put the powder on the lips and thinly glossed over it. Then put more pearl powder and gloss again, etc. Use really thin layers of gloss! c:

Awesome tutorial! I paint my dolls and do some comissions too, but I'm ever afraid of using acrylics to finish them x''D Must work on it tough.

Thank you~ ^_^
Aside from its long lasting and durable quality, acrylics is very unique to its finishing and look and it is a must to try. Let's try! XD

thank you for this wonderful tutorial!
I've been having a hard time learning about the precautions you take when using msc, I didn't know about that 24 hour thing!
Really thanks again! this tutorial is beautiful! (and so is your doll!)
oh! and i was wondering, once msc dries and you wait 24 hours the msc on the doll wont harm you right?

Thank you~ ^_^
24 hours, in fact, is from my experience and if it is possible, I personally recommend that you leave them longer. MSC leaching is depended on so many factor. I won't say that 24 hours is exactly and I won't recommend anyone to smell them directly to check. ^_^"
What I can tell is I think that MSC will keep on leaching for some period of time. You can notice this by putting your doll in a box with lid, leave him/her overnight, open the box to check the day after. The MSC smell flowing out of the box will get weaker and weaker when time pass. 24 hours is my personal minimum standard that I experienced, and I think I could recommend, that it would be much okay than suddenly or just few hours after dried. As when I was taking commission, I had to make everything on schedule as much as possible, and I think that it should not take a long time to keep owner's dolls with me.
Hope this help answering your question. ^_^

Great tutorial!
I'll be using this once i get my doll and have the courage to do faceup myself.
Sorry to be a bit off topic, but does the dolls bought from companies come pre-sprayed with MSC or some type of sealer?

tr3is In reply to GlassJewel [2010-11-25 14:15:19 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much. I'm so glad it would be useful.
About pre-sprayed, I think it is upon your dollie manufacturer(s). From my experience, most dolls come with no MSC or any protection coating. What I recommend is, check with your doll manufacturer(s) if they have sprayed or not is the best way.
In my opinion, spraying another set of MSC layer before start painting is better and safer for your dolls. Hope this help~ ^_^

do you have to use the special products for the face-up? or can u use generic brand acrylics and pastels?

No, I haven't use any special products for my face-up works.
I normally use only Zoukeimura's Acrylic and Zoukeimura's Pastel from Volks (and some Rembrandt's Soft Pastel. Rembrandt's soft pastel is very good one, rich in colour and easy to use.) Hope this help~ ^_^

beautiful *-*
Your tutorial is amazing~ it's very easy to understand ^.^
I realized that i have a lot more things to buy >_> although i already tried a feace-up but i want it to look better and better... What brush sizes did you use for the lower eyelashes and the lips?
My brushes always seem to be to big... but i couldn't find smaller brushes... or is it because i only use water to make my acrylics thin?
(Sorry for my bad english u.u)
π: 0 β©: 1
tr3is In reply to Dancer-in-theDark [2010-09-11 20:26:02 +0000 UTC]
For brush size for lining, I normally use 18/0, but trimmed script brush size 000 is lovely as well. (and 000 is much cheaper than x/0 brushes) The very first brush I used in face-up work is No.0, and it could work fine if you touch it light enough.
I also have a set of nail art brushes made in your country (the golden hair with white handle brush in tool photos), it's cheaper than general art brushes, and it really works! ^_^ (In the set has 3 brushes in a different length and thickness)
About acrylic medium, water can be called a medium for acrylic as it can dilute and mix with acrylic, but somehow, direct-to-purpose chemical acrylic medium (e.g. flow medium, retarder) can work better than water from the action of its chemical components. Anyway, water can work, but you have to stir it very well and check that it is at your convenience flow for you to paint. ^_^

Thanks for this great tutorial) I think it is really helpful)
I've never tried to mix up pastels and shine pearl, it's interesting tip and I'll try it in the next face-up. Have you ever used Pearl-ex powders instead of shine pearl? Just interesting is there any difference between this products.
And I always was careful about the number of layers of MSC - I thought that the more layers of sealant the head gets the more easy you can damage face-up because multiple layers are making crust which can easily been peeled off like that [link]
Have this ever happened to you?
π: 0 β©: 1
tr3is In reply to RE-main [2010-08-29 10:41:43 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome~ Also, thank you so much~! ^_^
I've never used Pearl-ex powders instead of Shine Pearl as I cannot find it in local store or any online store located near to my country, so I'm sorry that I don't really know how the result of them will be differ or not. ^_^"
About the number of layers of MSC, from my experience, thing happened to the example has never happened to me (yet).
I think MSC is a very sensitive material. Not only to the temperature and humidity but it's also very sensitive to many other things. For example, the method we spray (lightly, point, cover, fill, coat, lush, wet), distance between the can and the object, drying time and drying condition, 24 hours-after-sprayed storage condition. Yeah, IMO, the chipped-off or peeled-off can be caused to happen by any stage. o_o"
In summary, to me, spraying many layers of MSC causes no problem. (The only personal problem is I don't like removing the face-up I did as it usually takes me half a day to totally clean each! T_T)
