Built between 1969 to 1971 exclusively for the Union Pacific Railroad. EMD build the worlds most powerful and largest diesel locomotive in the world. Designed for fast heavy freight servies The DDA40X were the diesel equivalent of the Union Pacific's Big Boy steam Locomotives. So if you need a fast locomotive that can haul heavy freight fast, The DDA40X were the best chsoes. There equipped with 2x 645E3 EMD prime mover's, Making 6,600 hp (4,920 kW) horsepower.

D-D stands for DD axel arrangement

A stands for the A type unit. (No B unit's were made)

40 Stand for the model type.

X stud for the Locomotive was Experimental.

Today 13 of these Big diesel's have been preserved with on undergoing restoration to operation.
