Nah - it's there whenever they need a 'camera' type of device. It came first in Majora's Mask, and is part of Triforce Heroes. most recently.

I really like em, but I do wonder how practical they are in use. Like, I don't even see many fantasy warriors using them, let alone ever being a staple in any actual military, that I know of. Still! They do look cool, and that's enough for Link!

Well yeah, magical forging techniques let you get away with a fair bit, I think Link has had some rather impractical weapons that somehow work well.
