Old question finally answered. I’m bad at answering Asks, but I’m trying to get better.

What a fantastic interpretation of a divisive gameplay mechanic. I always enjoy seeing your personal takes on Samus and the Metroid series, and this one is no exception.
When Samus Returns was released, it became the latest trend to rhetorically analyze Metroid II: Return of Samus and explain how every aspect of the game (positive or negative) served the greater purpose of brilliant storytelling. Such analysis is subjective and is therefore neither right nor wrong, but it does certainly build appreciation for the subject being analyzed.
The downside is that everyone is drawing the same conclusion: "Return of Samus did X, Y, and Z, and is therefore good. Samus Returns does not do X, Y, or Z, and is therefore bad." Not enough people are saying, "Samus Returns doesn't do X, Y, or Z. Instead, it does A, B, and C, which is different from Return of Samus but still provides another form of brilliant storytelling in its own right." I'm hoping that more people start to rhetorically analyze Samus Returns and appreciate the game's own merits, just like you are doing here.
Also, I have to point out how clever it is that you use the "RIP AND TEAR" meme in regards to a "HUGE" creature that Samus kills by going inside its "HUGE GUTS".

Good point! It's easy to 'pick sides' early on - being too nostalgic and seeing anything new as bad, or being too present-focused, and thinking anything old has no value. Definitely best to try to see things as their own thing with history, and take it from there. Well, at least I try to - sometimes it's hard when passions flare! I'm just happy we're back to more subtle storytelling in Metroid, working gameplay and narrative closely together - it's always done that really well.
Thanks for the kind words!

It just makes the end of Super Metroid that much more gut-wrenching.

*nodnod* While the Baby Metroid was cute, we didn't get any real time to spend with it. Samus Returns gives us a great little sequence, and, if anyone was in doubt, shows how Samus could get so attached to the little guy.

And they added Ridley because he must be in every Metroid game by law or something.

We already know she can use Ice Beam, and now apparently she can use Counter as well. I guess you were prescient:

You have a very interesting take on this scenario. My interpretation was that not killing the baby metroid was out of remorse for the genocide Samus committed on their species.

That also is a strong possibility. If they went that direction, I'd think it'd be cool to have some narrative moments as Samus goes deeper, like she's questioning her mission, especially as she finds evidence that the Chozo created the Metroids, so she and Metroids are both 'children of the Chozo'.
