Description
"Oh, Kirsty, so eager to play, so reluctant to admit it..."I was driving to my dental appointment, but I learned that it was cancelled when I got there. (Grrr, that was a waste of a quarter-tank that I want back!) Defeated, I went Subway to eat, waiting for the local comic store to open, and the product was this sketch and a song I was singing on a loop:Elliot and Kirsty drinkin' some tea
K-I-L-L-I-N-G
First add sugar, then add spice
Knowin' your flesh is really, really nice! The image is a combination of a "freed" Elliot Spenser (in Pinhead costume, as seen in the end of Hellbound) and his adversary-and-love interest, Kirsty Cotton (as seen in Hellseeker). Even after three films — four, if you count Hell on Earth, their tantalising and twisted love affair has yet to be consummated — and remains infuriatingly platonic!
(I have recently read that Hellraiser creator Clive Barker has accepted to write the screenplay for the upcoming Hellraiser remake, with more detail about Pinhead's origins, which hopefully means MORE ELLIOT! Although, according to an interview with actor Doug Bradley, he has yet to be approached to play the part of Elliot/Pinhead, but I hope he will! And maybe this remake will bring more insight to Pinhead and Elliot — and perhaps even Kirsty. Also, check out this wonderful music video . Beware, it contains spoilers!)

I feel your pain, platonic relationships can certainly frustrate.

Maybe. I'd take a caress too.
The third film was really intended for the character of Kirsty, instead she was replaced with a different character named Joey. I have nothing really against Joey, but she wasn't Kirsty. And it should have been Kirsty who Elliott/Pinhead caressed.

Why the replacement, then?

I believe Ashley Laurence, actress who portrays Kirsty, couldn't make it. She does make a tiny cameo in the third film, but wasn't able to the time to be MAIN character. The writer of the HR3, Peter Atkins said that the third film was suppose to be the "consummation of the Pinhead-Kirsty relationship." (headdesks) Rrrr!

HR6, Hellseeker, comes rather close. I really enjoyed the film and it was great to see Pinhead and Kirsty confront each other again and seeing how their relationship has evolved. Kirsty went from a girl, still a child, at 17 to a full adult woman at late-20s. If anything, Pinhead desires her MORE now than he ever did previously.
Perhaps the major reason why is that Kirsty is married to a man named Trevor, and (unsuprisingly) Pinhead doesn't like Trevor at all; Pinhead is insanely jealous and acts more like a cuckold boyfriend. He does everything in his power to get Kirsty into his arms (well, into hellish domain, at least) and to torture Trevor. And it's quite sweet — in a sick, perverse way; it's a great step-on.
When I was at horror convention, I talked to Ashley Laurence about Hellseeker briefly, with Doug Bradley commenting in here and there as we talked.

I definately recommend films 1, 2, and 6. And 3, as an honourable mention; though it had a lot of problems -- corny dialogue, slasher blood (which isn't very HR-esque), weak storyline, some over-the-top acting, and no Kirsty -- I still enjoy the film very much.

There's eight films:
4 - Bloodline. Well, I didn't like this film primarily because it didn't follow the countinity of the Hellraiser Mythos at all. I hated the fact that Lemarchand is an "innocent victim" in the film; in the comics, he's a real bastard, mass murderer of 2000*! And there's something about "cenobites in space" that just doesn't work for me. Highlight of the film was a demon-in-human-skin named Angelique, although it didn't make any sense to me when she became a cenobite.
5 - Inferno, okay, I admit it was okay. It's a psychological thriller, in the tone of Hellseeker (though not quite as coherent). Great atmosphere, twisted plotline, good acting, some great new cenobites (Wire Twins and the Torso - who freaked me out). It needed to be trimmed more because there are parts that it could have done without. It could have been better if they reworked script more, vamp up the ending slightly, and removed the nonsensical cowboys. Pinhead has a great monologue in this film!
7 - Deader deals with a devil-worshipping cult. It was a major disappointment for me after the greatness of sixth film, Hellseeker. It was really random. Poor acting, poor plot, terrible effects -- even though SFX Master Stan Winston produced this!
8 - Hellworld was another disappointment for me. Critics and fans alike agree with me on this. Yet the highlight was Lance Henriksen.
HR 9 has been in the works for a while. Planned to come out next year, as a remake of the first film.

4: I don't know what a cenobite is and I feel bad...
5: That sounds alright, too bad it's only an editing problem. Those are so easy to fix.
7: That sounds awful.
8: See above.

Pinehad is a cenobite. Close to a demon, but not quite, as they were once human and transformed into this "undead" slaves/servents of Hell's labrynith. Proveyers of pleausre and pain. That's a cenobite.
The term "cenobite" (historically) is an archaic word meaning simply "a member of a communal religious order" (ie: monk, priest, nun, etc). In the original novel, the cenobites as Indeed, the original novel mentions the Cenobites referred to as "theologians of the Order of the Gash" and as "Hierophants" -- ones who bring the congregants into the presence of that which is deemed holy (churches, alters, etc).
