Part IPart II---
"There's a huge fly in my room," replied Oscar, "a great buzzing fly. I can't sleep till I drive it out...!"
This is a request from ~Sen-Graham-McGrath . She asked if I still had the comic of Oscar Milde vs. Buzzing Fly from my old GMD website back in 2000, which I did, and if I could re-post it, saying it made her laugh during time she was ill. Naturally, I can't say no to that, so here it is:
After reading David Coakley's biographical book of Oscar Wilde: The Importance of Being Irish, there was a small snippet that had me rolling, which was humourously recollected by an army officer who had been at Trinity College with the real-life Oscar Wilde:One night we heard a frightful row in his room. Myself and another man rushed to his door. He was half dressed and jumping about the floor. 'What on earth is the matter?" we asked. "There's a huge fly in my room," replied Oscar, "a great buzzing fly; I can't sleep till I drive it out!"It was an excuse to draw my character of Oscar Milde in a light to which I haven't done. Usually, he's always collected and charming, but here — I could draw him belligerent (for the first time ever) and in a silly nightie (yet another first)! There's something adorable about it...
This is the final comic. Personally, I like the conceptuals better, but my art instructor chose these poses and I didn't think they were as dynamic as the original poses. Please note that this is an old piece, so please, please be gentle...
Inspiration - Oscar Wilde (Historical) | Models - Peter Egan , Stephen Fry

It was definitely not one of his poetic moments. When I read the story, I laughed hardily for many minutes and I knew one day that I had to draw it or write it out.

Well, the drawing/comic came out lovely, if I may say so! Somehow, seeing Milde (and Wilde!) in such an undignified light is highly amusing to me...just goes to show that even literary geniuses can have the same everyday annoyances as us mortals...

I really like that panel set up here. I haven't done too many comics because I always have the hardest time coming up with what kind of panels to do. But this is wonderful, so smooth from one picture to the other. This is so funny too. such a hilarious idea. (Tim Conway did this once in a skit) Although I must admit I really liked your sketched poses.

I find comics very difficult to do. I need more practice. I never know if I should use the right panel sizes or full page spreads.
I honestly think this scene reminds me of Mr. Bean having a picnic and was harassed by a fly: [link]

Nice! I have to agree with you that the concepts were more dynamic, but the poses you chose flow together very well. Poor Oscar, I wonder if he ever did get that fly...

This is so cute! I love how frantic and animated his movements/poses are, and the lack of actual dialogue really creates the illusion that it is very fast paced. : )
I agree with you; the conceptual sketches look like they have more movement. Is it because it's sketchier? xD

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like these! I think the line of action is better in the conceptuals. You lose that franticness when you clean up the lines.

vythefirst In reply to tranimation-art [2011-06-13 19:41:31 +0000 UTC]
True, true. Perhaps rather than "cleaning up the lines", you should ink them in the same, sketchy manner? I'm not sure if it would be considered acceptable by your art instructor, but it would have retained the frenetic movements as you wanted. xD
