Description
"Murphy, it's you..."Did you know that DA doesn't have a single stamp dedicated to the Robocop franchise — not a single one? This is the first (and, hopefully, not the last)! The original Robocop (1987) blew me away as a child and I have since devoured practically everything on it, from the mediocre sequels to the horrible TV spinoffs to the notorious animated series to the obscure comics and games to the loved fan-films and fan-edits. A remake is planned for 2013 in 3D, ugh! But, to this day, the original 1987 film remains one of my all-time favourite films.
Taking place in the not-so-distant future of a grim, ultra-violent, dystopian Detroit, the giant mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP) owns and runs practically every aspect of life, from the government to the military to the domestic. The idealistic Police Officer Alex J. Murphy, in one of the most horrific executions done on film, is killed during his first day of the job and OCP takes his remains to build a mechanical law enforcement prototype unit known as "Robocop" to cut down on the crime and eliminate human error (as the police force is ready to go on strike) in order to construct "Delta City," a domed district reserved for the rich and influential to be built over the Old Detroit slums and push the poor and undesirable out of their sights. As Robocop makes a name for himself around the city, he unexpectedly starts regaining the memories of his lost life and lost humanity, avenging his "death" by bring in the street thugs who killed him to justice, which soon lead him to the capitalistic corporate execs of OCP's boardroom.
The film with a silly name juggles genres, as it's an action film, a sci-fi film, a war film, a horror, a thriller, a crime drama, a tragedy, a social satire, a black comedy, a miracle play, and a morality play, packed with layers of depth, emotions, heart, intelligence, and a bit of camp. It's a social commentary against American culture and values, consumerism and materialism, the rise of right-wing conservatism, Reaganomics, corporate takeovers, militarization of the police force, over-dependency on technology, psychology, religion, existentialism, class conflicts, socio-politics, war, terrorism, Nazism, Vietnam, Cold War, crime, drugs, avarice, greed, and ultra-violence. The film, even by today's standards, has definitely indulged in ultra-violence and has no qualms about showing it; there are still scenes of this film that are still difficult to watch. In fact, although the film was released in theatres with barely an R-rating; VHS released the film in the original uncensored NC-17 edition. Recently, a Director's Cut DVD was released with a few extra seconds that didn't make it into the NC-17 edition. Filmed in my hometown of Dallas, Texas, the production also utilized fantastic practical effects and stunning stop-motion animation — fuck CGI! This was back when films were an art form!
If you haven't seen the first Robocop, watch it! And if you haven't seen it for a long time, watch it again! You won't regret it, my friend!

Dear Lawd, I love Robocop. When I was in high school, I remember reading about the part where one of the bad guys gets melted by acid and that made me curious about the film, though I never looked for it on my own. One day, I came downstairs and found my parents watching the final battle between Robocop and the thugs and I loved it so much that I bought the movie that same afternoon and watched it every single Saturday morning.

Great film! I enjoy the Unrated Director's Cut the most! I grew up with this film, its sequels, and rode the franchise until the was buried into the ground back in the 90s; the remake, I admit, I did enjoy, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Ah, I don't think I have the unrated director's cut! I definitely would like to own it, though, because it's in my top 5 favorite movies. I actually got to write an essay on Robocop for a science fiction class I took a semester ago. That was a pretty fun essay to write.

Definitely check out the director's unrated cut. It's not much a difference, but I think it works better. You can find it on the new bluray edition or the special edition DVD.

I fuckin LOVE Robocop! The first two are awesome, the third one? So-so, the new one was better than I expected. Even though it should've been R rated.

Same here! I liked the reboot a lot more than I thought I would. I thought it was a good film, but I'm okay with the PG-13 rating after seeing it. In a way, I'm surprised it got that, because it had a death of a child in the beginning.

agreed, though robocop 3 makes me kinda sad though in that it killed a really damn good directors career (that being fred dekker)
i really hope this new remake will be good though seeing some of the leaked script and the decision of making it a PG-13 i am really not getting my hopes up, though it still does have a really good team behind it, all be it with really crappy looking designs

Nope, not a single one. This is the one and only ROBOCOP stamp. But once the reboot comes out, you'll see more crop up, I'm sure of it. But it saddens me that this film doesn't get enough love. I know people who refuse to watch films any older than 15 years and that just makes my heart break.

its a shame, I've first watched it a week ago and I totally fell in love with it. and indeed.. I don't know I kind of dislike it that people start noticing a franchise/game/ music when a remake comes out or it is mentioned/ used in something. if you would simply search like a minute or two you find out about all those things very easely, unless its very underground, I just hate it that people always go along with whats new or a hype, but that's just my opinion
what ? really? O.O oh I would be so pissed of if I would meet someone that sets that rule. seriously they miss out on almost 90 years of films. I also really REALLY dislike it when people start bashing a movie just because the special effects are dated. O.o
and personally I prefer older movies (kinda under 2000) but I don't mind watching a newer movie since there are good ones. I find most older movies more, creative, and not just about the money. especially in the horror genre, which wen't incredibly downhill at one point.
nowadays I kinda get the feeling that a lot of movies are rather uninspired. but there are a lot of exceptions ofcourse. but that's just my opinion

Agreed. I'm a film buff, I watch films of all kinds, from silents to present-day, but I seem to prefer the classics because they ENDURE and there are reasons why they endure and why they're "classics" in the first place. They are timeless and they will always hit you, inspire you, and motivate you no matter your generation. Those are the films I love! It doesn't matter how old the film is, but how it affects you and how it still affects you every time you watch it again and again and again.

I recommend watching it again. Although kids enjoy this film because it's has robots and explosions, the fact of the matter is that Robocop is an adult film. It's very difficult to find the R-rated version; most editions are the X-rated cut of the film; it's meant for adults.
Yes, the story has a simplicity to it, but there's a layers upon layers of depth to the film. There's this entire background that is a product of the 80s, with the Reagan administration, with right-wing conservatism, Reaganomics, elitism, corporate takeovers, the Cold War, nuclear destruction, technological dependence, the death of humanity, etc. The film took that position two to three steps more to the right and that's Robocop's world. There's all this religious symbolism, moral symbolism, unions, workforce ethics, social reform, organized crime, the fact that criminals can be found in the streets as well as the suits in executive rooms. The tragedy of losing one's identity as well as your life and how do you define yourself. The militarization of the police force was the novel idea at the time and it's everyday thing. You can analyse the film that predict our present-day lives.
Definitely try the film again. There's nothing in this film that superfluous. Everything from the news reports to the commericals to the shows to the characters to the story have all these double and triple and quadruple meanings.

It's available on Netflix, but I don't know if it's R-rated edition or X-rated. I recommend the X-rated because censorship was different in the 1980s. I think it looses something in the translation in the R-rated edition.
