Description
This is my Elloom civilization. I was inspired by several sources including jellyfish...The Ellom race is approximatly 6 billion years old. Their star along with their planet died 2 billion years ago. They are incredibly tough and durable. This is due to their uniqe body covering: the mantle. The elloom's mantle is a thick layer of dead tissue which is constantly being produced and recycled. Their mantle also keeps them warm. It is known that their homeplanet had a thin, cold, and dry atmosphere. Beneath the mantle is a layer of cealed air, which is replenished by the single nostril at the top of the body. This air is warm and moist to be absorbed by the spiracles on the inner walls. Their bodies acually require much less air and food because of their highly eficient metabolisms. Elloom are carnivores which take small game live. Once a month, the feast begins with the releasing of various small animals (reascued from their homeworld) all over the place, and each elloom catches two or three meals which they devower on the spot. They manipulate tools with eight retractable tentacles around their midsection. Due to low gravity on their homeworld, they walk on eight tentacles on their lower body. The elloom pocess four eyes on stalks, each of which has 360 degree vision. The eyes, arms, and legs can all be retracted within the body cavity for protection. The holes for the nostril, eyes, legs, and mouth can all form tight ceals so they may be fully protected. The arms also pocess a row of dangerous stings which carry a veanom as toxic as a rattlesnake to their homeplanet's fauna. Their stings acually produce a phycoactive effect on some other beings. They have high senses of magnetic disturbances, sight, hearing, and gaah. The elloom have a very interesting sexaul dimorphism and practice. What appears to be one individual is actually the male and female bonded together. Males and females are bonded from birth to the extent of being considered a single entity. The male makes up the top have of the body: upper torso, brain, nostril, eyes, and arms all belong to him. The female is the lower half of the body: lower torso, legs, mouth, and genitals are her's. Their fused bodies exchange bodily requirements the other needs, including eggs and sperm. The male's sperm constantly finds its way to newly produced eggs of the female. This is when the sex of the embryos is determined. When two individuals (or pairs of individuals) find each other acceptable, they will mate and inciminate each other with fertilized eggs. Useing tiny magnets within them (males negative, females positive), the eggs form pairs with opposite genders from the foreign body. This process stimulates growth and development into fused male/female bodies. The elloom are unique in that they are the only naturally immortal sophonts. They go through cycles as juviniles, adults, ancients, then back to adults, then to juviniles in a transdiffrentiated cellular process. This ability allowed them to develop a true interstellar empire B.Z. without faster than light travel. They created many transapient races, and gave other sophonts they encountered technology (if they deserved it) like the ikhan. In their stone age, they still needed to reproduce to fight off diseases, predators, natural disasters, and wars. They now live in peace among themselves, and have eradicated diseases through genetic manipulation. They have become quite strong with genetics, altering themselves so that their mantles are so strong, they can even survive in the vacume of space, or the depths of the abyss with partial clothing. Mating to produce offspring is highly restricted to when census shows that an elloom has died through some accident. Some cultures of elloom prefer to keep to themseves with as little danger as possible, living alongside dk'dks, siir, and puppeteers. Others see that they are willing to put themselves at the risk of death for a good cause. The elloom race as a whole is very logical and emotionless, although they are capable of understanding the emotions of other species through logical observation, and they are respectful of all.

These are extremely awesome. Getting very alien vibes from them and their design is very nice!

the race reminds me of the Time Lords of Gallifrey but very alien, nothing humanoid, can they regenerate their bodies during dire emergencies?.

to they have bones in their tentacles? because tentacles can only push very weakly as they are muscle and muscles can only pull.
not trying to criticise just i always notice things like that

I didn't envision them with any true bones at first. I thought of a series of ring-like discs of interconecting cartilage and muscles.

Thank you! I acually modelled the basic body plan at first after box jellyfish. Than I realized through earlier feedback that it resembles the Old Ones of Lovecraft.
They probably have more advanced weapons, but I put one in killing a human for the heck of it!

I like this critter... it reminds me of some type of cnidarian, and the eyes have a nice sort of stomatopod-esque look to them. I love the little pictures you added of them running and feeding, and I especially like the little pic of one nailing a human in the head (very funny!).

I saw these and thought 'box jelly!' These are great! Also, what program are you using to edit these? You might be able to color the pencil work using multiply or other layer properties
... it's not the same process I use, but: [link]

I have no editing process as of now. I just draw them and scan them in. But I am expecting a wacom sometime soon...

Well, if you're interested in coloring them, you can download GIMP and set the layer with linework to 'Multiply' instead of 'Normal.' Then color one layer down! That's a good first step that I wish I'd known ... hopefully the advice is not unwelcome

FINALLY!! a time lord that is in fact alien! and their planet was destroyed... much in the same way as Galaphrey was... have you any idea what I am speaking of?
regardless of that, I do like this species, and the idea of fused genders is intreging. I do have two qualms however... the nostril seems to be prone to filling with water during rainfall, possibly resulting in the being(s)'s death by drowning... also, a race this aincent would likely have developed much further than apendage held weapons! XD

I have no idea what this "Galaphrey" is you speek of... When I notice the fact of their destroyd planet, and their logical ways, it reminds me of Vulcans.
As for the plasement of the nostril... (1) Their planet was an arid world, similar to Mars. (2) They require less oxygen than we do, so I imagine they could hold their breath (closed nostril) when it does rain. (3) In modern soiety they have acsess to things like umbrellas, roofs, wheather-resistant force feilds, and wheather-controlling/altering technology.
I just drew that one(s) with the gun(s) because it looked cool! XD
(HAHAHA, Ones with the Guns, HAHA, That Rhimes!)

... doctor who... seriously? you've never heard of it!?
well, I understand that they would have no problem NOW, eith their incredibly advanced technology, but earlier in their development (and that of other species on the planet) they would not have had such things... but, allright, I supose they could simply hold their breath through a storm...
oh, allright then! XD haha...

Of course I've heard of Doctor Who... I've just never watched it...
The gun part was interesting to develop though, because I had to think of a gun designed for tentacle-useage. Notice it has two parts, the fuelstarter, and the pen.

well, I'll give you a brief summary about time lords then... timelords were a race of humanoids (unfortunatley, most 'aliens' on the show are humanoid, but it is still quite awesome!) that had an extreemly advanced handle of technology, including the ability to warp space time in order to make objects far larger on the inside than in their exterior, and the ability to create vessles that treveled through time... all but one (two at one point of the series) of the time lords were obliterated in a time war with the Darleks (a race of biomechanical cepholopod looking creatures) that also resulted in the destruction of Galephrey, the time lords' home planet. the last of the time lords, the doctor, now wandersthe universe with his host of companions... he has had so many due to the fact that time lorda are imortal, capable of regenerating themselves when they become to old to function any longer... much like the elloom.

Wow really! Thanks!
When I was thinking about their evolution, I did have jellyfish in mind. The ultimate inspiration for the look was the box jellyfish.

very cool man!
they look like the elder things, the Lovecraftian mythology.
the arrangement of eyes on top, the tentacles that surround the barrel body, the tentacles that are thicker at the bottom for transportation ...
