Description

Deplector:  The massive chasms that snake across Skull Island, commonly called “Spider Pits” are inhabited by many aggressive life forms, scavenging and preying on each other and any unfortunate victim that wanders into this treacherous domain.  Many of these creatures remain highly mysterious, among which are the Deplectors.  These hybrid beasts seem to have originated as a symbiosis between cephalopod and crustacean creatures, which has developed to the point where the two aspects have become merged into one.  Despite their large size and distinctive appearance, Deplectors are very seldom seen, almost to the point where their initial existence was questionable.  They favor the deepest lost pits where they may accumulate power in solitude.  Said power manifests as a sort of influence (whether via chemical, acoustic, hypnotic, or psychic is unknown) over various other chasm dwellers, forming them into personal defensive armies.  Occasionally, these armies will usher trapped prey towards their “master”.  What exactly happens to these victims, however, is a total mystery, as no one has ever seen a Deplector actually kill its catch before slipping back into darkness.  Length:  12 to 22 feet.

Diplodosaurus:  Unlike the placid Brontosaurs and Goldons, or the reclusive Amargospinus, these sauropod kaijuformes are most definitely hostile.  Diplodosaurs are cryptic predators that prowl their territories relentlessly, ranging through dense jungles and steaming swamps alike.  Camouflaged by shifting color patterns, they prefer smaller prey they can swallow easily.  Their flexible necks and long sticky tongues allow them to pursue cornered targets through twisted branches and roots of trees, which their thumb claws can tear apart if need be.  They take especial interest in Leaf Wing hives.  They are a parthenogenic species, constantly scattering eggs throughout their territories to ensure survival.  And if their constrictive necks and claws should be outmatched in battle, their tails are able to detach and, like a guided missile, lock onto and continue to strangulate the opponent while the main body escapes.  Length: 280 to 375 feet.

Glyptosphere:  These large xenarthrans are common mammalian florafauna of the drier woodlands and sparer valleys of the uplands.  Like many armored herbivores of the island, they live through cyclic hibernation periods during which they absorb nutrients and radiation through the ground, allowing symbiotic plants to integrate themselves into their hides.  Glyptospheres often nest communally, forming groups of living boulders with the young concentrated in the middle.  Should these be threatened, one or more adults may awaken to ward off the attackers with their pronged heads and sharp-spined tails.  If sufficiently confronted, or if a quick migration is in order, they will curl into balls and allow gravity to do most of the work for them, with occasional flicks of their prongs.  Length: 18 to 25 feet.

Carnoflage:  These large predators are among the many seldom seen florafaunal predators of the Super Jungles on account of their extensive camouflage techniques.  Their skins can match the patterns of light within their environment perfectly, and their scales can rearrange into a variety of textures and outline-breaking patterns that render them practically invisible.  Clinging to branches with their hyperextensive claws, they can position themselves near enough to unsuspecting prey to strike with their blade-edged tails.  Carnoflage mate for life, and nearly always hunt as pairs.  They are wary of other predators, though, and will usually retreat if their cover is blown prematurely.  Length: 33 to 45 feet.

Breeder Beast:  While most hypervores of Skull Island pose significant threats to other creatures, there are some that are no less destructive to the island’s balance of plant life.  Breeder Beasts are highly mutated amoebic creatures that live to reproduce and eat.  Their unstable internal breeder reactors constantly divide in an effort to remain stable, resulting in mass propagation and swarms of the protoplasmic creatures.  They consume any source of radioactivity they sense, including ore deposits and kaiju carrion.  Mostly, though, they prefer plant matter.  Most population explosions occur near the River of Steam and volcanic geysers of the Flooded Forest, as they also require moist conditions to breed.  In high numbers, they can decimate sections of forested environments symbiotic florafouna.  Fortunately, they are slow moving and lack highly developed individual survival instincts apart from consumption and reproduction, making tasty snacks for large herbivores and opportunistic predators.  Length: 3 to 30 feet.

Sker Buffalo:  These large herbivorous florafauna are highly evolved amphibious bovids.  They are able to extract enough oxygen through their algae-like fur and dorsal plant symbionts to remain partially submerged for weeks at a time.  They are most common within the Flooded Forest, where large herds gather for mates and protection.  The oldest and largest individuals can be several times as massive as more typical members of the population.  These often guard the rivers, lakes, and passageways that can lead to the denser herds.  Adult Sker Buffalo are hardly to be reckoned with, as their armored skulls, capped with enormous horns can be wielded with dangerous force, and are even more effective when working as a herd.  Hornspan: 30 to 65 feet.

Looks at Diplodosaurus Skull Island the place were even plant eaters are willing to say "fuck ordering a salad, I'll eat the humans"

Carnoflage is awesome

I didn't think that anyone remembers Breeder Beast

Awesome as always man, also I’ve been making up my skull island creature list and there’s three things. One: My version of a carnotaur has inspiration from a Barroth from the monster hunter series, Two: i plan on making a chameleon escue carnotaur. Do you have suggestions on what other aspects I could add in for them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Transapient In reply to G-rexkiver [2019-03-12 21:00:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you're looking to other animals to hybridize Carnoturus with, other unique squamates like geckos or iguanas come to mind.  Or maybe a very smooth version like a cross with sand fish or skinks.  Or maybe you can take Jurassic Park's frog-based genome sequencing very literally and combine them with toads or frogs.  A poison-dart-carno would be something.

Well how I about a chameleon and a mugger crocodile?

Reptilic1999 [2019-03-06 15:28:25 +0000 UTC]

Okay. The Diplodosaurus breaks the peaceful sauropod mold. I wonder what caused the drastic shift in diet and behavior for this particular family of sauropods? Right now it really looks like a python with an elephant's body basically.

And...

Dude, I am legit excited, scared, and terrified of this crab-octopus monster called Deplector. I mean, I thought the Moon-Spider and the Cave Creeper was disturbing already. But you blew them out of the water with this monstrosity. That thing is literally a creature that has crawled out of hell. The octopus eyes give me the chills. I don't know how you can prove me wrong with each Skull Island set becoming more and more bizarre with each post.

The Deplector is definitely a nightmare of nightmares for me. It'd be the perfect monster for any horror movie and setting; whether it'd be a dark alley, abandoned village, broken down aquarium, or haunted mansion. And I don't know honestly anyone or anything that can fight this amalgamation and live to tell the tale.

Transapient In reply to Reptilic1999 [2019-03-06 22:40:42 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps it could've been due to how many things there are in Skull Island's jungles that look like plants but aren't entirely, like Leaf Wings and Spore Mantids, and some sauropods just developed a preference for the juicer things that moved when they got eaten.
And glad, in a sick sort of way, that it has such good scare factor.  In 2005's King Kong, Deplectors were huge lobster-like creatures that mostly anchored themselves within cevices and lunged out with their huge claws to catch passing prey.  You can see one's arm catch one of the unfortunate men in the pit scene, and I think one can very briefly be seen lumbering towards the survivors before help arrives.  I basically combined that with the "tentacle bug" of the recreated lost spider pit sequence , while keeping the name because it's got such a cool sound to it.
And so far, no one probably has lived to tell of what happens to their victims...

That just makes the Deplector even more terrifying. As for the Diplodosaurus, I can sort of understand why if I cannot make the distinction between a salad and an organism that looks like salad but is not.

DinoGamer13 [2019-03-06 13:53:45 +0000 UTC]

Ok, so I am very surprised and confused by the Diplodosaurus....

but as as literally I always say, great work! I have a few questions though... first, do Carnoflage use their tails, like Glavenus does? Second, Why is the Diplodosaurus a carnivore? Do you have plans to introduce Battra to KR? And lastly, would you like some ideas?

anyways, I’m nearly ready on the next Age of monsters piece. I’ve also been working on some other concepts and I need some ideas, so if you have one of those, it would be greatly appreciated

Transapient In reply to DinoGamer13 [2019-03-06 22:33:09 +0000 UTC]

I once came upon a speculative evolution article about an alternate take on sauropods as venomous, snake-like predators.  I suppose that, and the aggressive portrayals of sauropods in the original King Kong helped flesh that one out.  And Battra has indeed been hinted at...  And you're welcome to fire away.

And what other types of concepts do you have in mind?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

DinoGamer13 In reply to Transapient [2019-03-07 12:29:58 +0000 UTC]

So, some ideas:

Khezu/hellbat: closely related to each other, they cannablize their own due to hypervory

magma turtle: has freaking mini volcanoes, on its back!

Transapient: floralfaunal raptor based on you!

and the other concepts include but are not limited to: monster Hunter monsters, subnautica creatures and other video game ideas....

Never have I been more grateful to you for stating your creature inspirations at the end of each entry, because that Deplector is weird in the most fantastic way possible and I want to learn more about what possibly could've influenced such a design.

A carnivorous, python-like Diplodocus with a lizard-like ability to detach its tail. I want to say that you've done weirder things for this series, but I dunno... Still loving the ingenuity, though!

Happy to say that I spotted the reference to The Lost World with your Carnoflage there. Wasn't expecting Glavenus to be an influence, though, despite the fact it's a sword-tailed abelisaurid. Maybe I missed it because the tail wasn't on fire...

Final comment... the Breeder Beast's design reminds me faintly of the see-through spindlebugs from The Edge Chronicles. The illustrations of them always showed their internal organs in glorious detail. I think it's because of the Breeder Beast's translucent appearance, combined with my first impression of them being caterpillar-like.

Transapient In reply to Cm25 [2019-03-06 22:28:52 +0000 UTC]

The idea of an aggressive carnivorous sauropod came about due to the portrayals of monstrous sauropods like in the original King Kong and Hanna Barbera's Godzilla.  I can also remember reading a speculative evolution article that describes an alternative version of sauropods as predators with venomous bites similar to a Komodo Dragon and that can unhinge their jaws like snakes to swallow things like small to medium hadrosaurs and theropods whole.
