Description

Amargospinus:  This creature favors the denser forests more then the swamps and lakes of most other sauropod-derived kaiju.  Its dorsal spines possess a wide range of flexibility, allowing it to pass smoothly through the jungles and aim more effectively towards attackers.  Their lichen-covered, bark-like skin lends further camouflage as well.  Though normally shy and rarely seen, a startled Amargospinus is a highly dangerous opponent, thrashing its spine-covered neck and whip-like tail to great effect.  Should an individual reach considerable age, they will become less and less active, eventually hunkering down into the jungle soil and entering a state of near-permanent hibernation.  These individuals will give birth to new generations, which dig their way up from the soil.  The offspring feed on many poisonous plants, eventually acquiring brighter colors to help ward of predators as they mature.  The spines of the permanently-rooted adults become more tree-like until a new grove is founded.  Length: 180 to 360 feet.

Lizard Baboon:  These primates seem to have undergone a sort of retrogression, exhibiting many reptile-like characteristics, such as a more flexible spine and sideways-oriented gait, and long muscular tail.  The underside of the tail is heavily ridged and in possession of numerous small spines to aid in climbing among the Super Jungle canopies.  Such structures can also be found along the palms and soles of the hands and feet.  As social creatures, living in large troops, they use their colorful faces to communicate between members and intimidate rivals.  They are also highly aggressive, and though they rarely descend to ground level, they defend their territories vigorously, and the Iwi avoid treetop foraging within all major Lizard Baboon territories.  Length: 15 to 20 feet.

Moon Spider:  Little is known definitively of these solpugid-like creatures.  Sightings are very rare, and so far have only been reported from the larger Bone Yards and Spider Pits.  What has been documented involves a particularly gruesome reproductive cycle.  Moon Spiders do not appear to produce eggs, but will occasionally infect other creatures with worm-like parasites that carry its genetic information.  Like a virus, these parasitic offspring will drastically alter the host’s biology.  The host will undergo a series of molts, during which its skeletal and muscular systems become progressively more arachnid-like.  All the while, the parasites feast on discarded organs and each other, until the strongest of the clutch assumes control and merges fully with the shell of the host, now an adult Moon Spider.  Among the known population, there is one Moon Spider that is believed to be derived from a human host if the Iwi’s stories hold truth.  They say it is not of their people, but was once a castaway that has taken up residence on a small off-shore isle.  Though FATHOM experts believe this to be possible, the allegations that this individual retains human-level cognition and now serves as a sort of warlock to dark powers of the Island is unsubstantiated.  Length: 5 to 7 feet.

Gomess:  These large synapsids are thought to be derived from dinocephalians, such as Anteosaurus.  They make their homes in caves, mostly in the uplands, and defend such lairs very aggressively.  They also make habits of sniffing out other lairs with deposits of radioactive material, which brings them into conflict with other hoarders like Cobrexes and Earth Eaters.  These brutes will then use their sizeable strength, claws, and horns to push others around.  Their horns are usually tipped with reactive elements that they can charge during combat, burning and poisoning their rivals should them manage to penetrate their armor.  Sometimes, their own hoards of nuclear material can lead to instabilities that accelerates their metabolisms to hypervore levels, and they can present great dangers to others should them venture forth from their hidden caves.  Length: 47 to 85 feet.

Litra:  These birds are held in high regard by the Iwi in light of their role in keeping certain dangerous creatures in check.  Phylogenetic analysis is difficult due to certain aspects of their life cycle, but they seem to be highly derived enantiornithians.  They are highly precocial, hatching from self-fossilized eggs with the help of a unique type of extremely corrosive acid they secrete from their bodies.  They feed upon parasites and bits of leaked radiation from larger kaiju, eventually converting most of their feathers to biological solar panels.  After laying their own eggs, they cease to feed and live exclusively off of stored solar energy.  When a threat to their future offspring is sensed, they use their self-reflective feathers and acid to immolate themselves.  In this state, their bodies can burn through many strong hides which, though not always killing the opponent, will weaken them substantially.  They often live symbiotically with Kong and Gorosaurs, providing extra help in areas where these great kaiju are not always present, such as the upland regions.  Rouge Gomess are a primary enemy.  Wingspan: 15 to 17 feet.

Arsinothere:  A late-surviving Embrithopod, Arsinotheres are huge and heavily armored herbivores of the dryer forests of Skull Island.  Their hides are embedded with stony scutes, making them very hard to penetrate.  The massive horns and tusks on their heads are also formidable weapons, though these mammals are usually secretive and peaceful enough.  It is during the mating season that the males can become very dangerous, sometimes attacking anything in sight, even larger and more aggressive creatures like Diretheres and Vastatosaurs.  Some males may even partially consume defeated rivals, turning their hides a deep red and heightening their aggressive tendencies.  It is not uncommon for mature males to get themselves killed in defense of females during this period after passing on their genes.  Length: 45 to 60 feet.

The Amargospinus sound very interesting with its life cycle. I can imagine the forests having literally dinosaur-shaped trees/thickets, like some naturally shaped hedge sculpture.

The Lizard Baboon has a neat gargoyle/bugbear-look and wow those lips look crazy.

Another great nightmare exercise with the Moon Spider. I like those mouth-like circular hands. And that face... Sorry, I can’t miss the opportunity to quote this funny line from ”Treasure Planet”: ’Spider-psycho! Spider-psycho!’
And do all of these Moon Spiders look the same or do they have different appearances depending on the host (ungulate-based hosts might have more pincer-like faces while bug-based hosts might develop more traditional spider faces)?

Hm, I would think there would be some variation, though the basic body plan remains the same.

Hey man, I have an idea for an Arsinotherium Diablosaurus Hybrid too? It’s part of Skull Island idea if it was created by the guy who made the monsters for the croods. Here’s a link check it out and tell me what you think huh?
Croodaceous Skull Island 99 species so far.

Dinosaurs and some other reptiles   As suggested by Daizu123, SyfymansXXX , Lediblock2, and Yours truly Me😆😁Gallimimus/ Stegosaur
Parasaurolophus/ zebra
Mosasaur/ crocodile
Ankylosaurus/ hippo
Pterosaur/ flamingo
Utahraptor/ cassowary
Triceratops/ rhino
Plesiosaur/ seal
Pachycephalosaurus/ ram
Troodon/ dragonfly
Sauropod/ tortoise/ Ampelosaurus
Titanosaur/iguana
Triceratops/ Jackson’s chameleon/ styracosaurus
Raptor/ hyena-dons
Ankylosaurus/ stegosaur
Sexually Dimorphisozed Ceratopsians
Velociraptor/ oviraptors
Texas longhorn ceratopsian
Pteranodon/ Rhamphornychus/ Quetzalcoatlus/ Nyctosaurus
Giraffe/ sauropod
Long armed Gorgosaurus like the old tyrannosaur throwbacks
Utahraptor/ Great Macc
However the main thing is that your Arsinotherium turning red from eating meat reminds me of a reek from Star Wars, and I was think of using the reek appearence for my guy is that okay?

Many of the Coodaceous Skull island ideas, after having looked over them, sound very cool!  A few are close to some ideas soon-to-be released in my own SI version, and the number and types of combinations are quite fun to envision.

The Moon Spider's reproductive cycle reminds me of a combination of the xenomorphs and The Thing. I love its skeletal design as well.

Everything else here is really cool as well, especially the Arsinothere. Arsinotherium isn't a prehistoric creature you see too often despite its distinctive appearance.

I really like Gomess and Litra here. Having the former be part of the dinocephalian family is awesome and the latter being allies with Kong and Gorosaurus puts a smile on my face.

I've always had a soft spot for Litra.  Great work!!!

Indeed, I had actually begun working on this before finding out how Gomess and Litra were linked via there debut story, so then ending up together here turned out to be quite fitting.

Planet of the ape got nothing on the Lizard Baboons, now that is scary because unlike most normaly Kaiju is highly sociable AND intelligent, has to be my favorite of this batch (the Moon Spider doesn't stays behind, that thing is really REALLY terrifying, mostly for that parasite life cycle, yikes)

Awesome as always! Great to see a Chaos Effect reference in the Amargospinus, and his appearance is also kind of funny due to the discovery of Bajadasaurus earlier this week!
So what kinds of creatures do the Moon Spiders usually infect?

Transapient In reply to DinoDragoZilla17 [2019-02-08 20:13:17 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, just goes to show that nature is already full of strangeness.  And I would think Moon Spiders usually target deer to rhino sized creatures.

Reptilic1999 [2019-02-08 01:51:26 +0000 UTC]

Alright...even though it is not as weird as some of the Skull Island entries, I still don't know where to start off honestly with this one.

Okay, maybe let's start with the Lizard Baboon. Is it just me, or does he look like a demon with the horns, retractable muzzle, and lizard tail? Because this retrogression is really on the extreme spectrum to go from mammal to reptile, especially for a primate. It's weird, but in a cool way. However, I can bet that some early sailors coming from the 17th or 18th century, if they had stumbled across Skull Island and happened to encounter this reptile-monkey weirdo, they'd call it a devil monkey, or simply a devil for a good reason.

On the other hand, the Litra is another one of those Ultra monsters I didn't expect you to add along with the Gomess. I like how you managed to explain the bird's powers using some of the abilities inherent to the reality of our natural world like the bombardier beetle that comes to mind. A literal, realistic phoenix that is also fulfilling a role similar to Zazu from the Lion King. Gomess reinvented as a surviving species of dinocephalians does not surprise me given his mammalian-like traits because of the design of the original's suit.

The Moon Spider is one really creepy and ghastly crawler with its life cycle being eerily similar to that of the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise, except to a more extreme degree that is like complete possession. I wouldn't want to meet this arachnid in the dark where it's human-like face would be the last thing I see that will haunt me to my grave before I get possessed by its parasitic offspring.

As for Amargospinus, he'd be one tough and intimidating dino to take down with all the spines, whip-like tail, and aggression.

The Arsinothere brings to mind the Reek from Star Wars as well as the Diablosaurus from The World of Kong artbook 2005.

DinoGamer13 [2019-02-08 01:44:04 +0000 UTC]

so from what I understand:

Amargospinus: an ultra spikey Asperdocus

lizarb baboon: a very strange ape

moon spider: an arachnid xenomorph

gomess: a subterranean gorgonopsid

litra: a literal phoenix

arisnothere: a super sayan arisnotherium

sooooo great work! will we be seeing some more monster hunter creatures?
I would also like to see some subnautica inspired creatures too.

It is amazing and beautiful!!!! I especially love the Litra (phoenix), Amargaspinus, and Arsinothere.

Would it be possible to slip in a homage to Primeval (the show) by adding a slightly realistic take on the Future Predators (bat monsters)? Those were so sick, cool, and iconic. It would be cool to see how they could fit in this island's complex ecosystems.
