Description

Cave Haunt:  The deepest caverns of Skull Island are inhabited by many strange and deadly species.  The Cave Haunt is of the more patient variety, awaiting hapless prey to wander within striking distance.  Their out dermal surface is coated with a very sticky fungal growth that makes escape from their grasp very difficult.  They are primarily hematophagous, draining the blood of their catches through their claws and mouthparts.  When inactive, Haunts retract themselves to the cave ceiling among a bed of similarly shaped, bulbous fungi growths.  It is possible the Haunt itself acts as a “harvester body” that provides nourishment for the rest of the fungal colony.  Its more animal-like features, then, may be due to convergent evolution, but tissue samples have detected definite traces of amniote protein structures, suggesting a highly developed symbiosis.  The fusion of animal and fungus is so thorough, however, that definitive classification is not possible at this point.  Body Length: 6 to 8 feet.

Vodyanoy:  These stealthy carnivores roam some of the larger bodies of water on the island, particularly the Sea of Thunder and Flooded Forest regions.  A thick layer of algae grows directly from their skin, providing camouflage and the ability to remain underwater for many days.  Though they usually prefer smaller prey, they will not pass up an opportunity for a larger meal, which they stalk with a shrewd cunning.  Vodyanoy of different regions often employ different hunting methods for their own preferred prey, similar to pods of Orca, though they usually hunt alone.  Indeed, isotopic analysis indicates a common ancestry with basal cetaceans, such as Ambulocetus.  Tales of the Iwi suggest they sometimes maim and take prey alive back to hidden lairs for later consumption.  Length: 12 to 15 feet.

Gesura:  These strange theropods are perfectly adapted for a life among the giant corals of the west coasts.  It seems to be derived from a creature along the lines of Masiakasaurus.  They fish for slippery prey with their hyperextended teeth, occasionally diving into the water in pursuit.  They possess a subdermal layer of limestone scutes, which serve as anchorage points for a variety of cnidarian lifeforms, such as anemones and coral polyps, to attach themselves.  These creatures become integrated into the theropod’s body as they grow, providing stinging tentacles to aid in prey capture and defense.  Length: 11 to 16 feet.

Goldon:  These massive sauropods are most common within the Sea of Thunder, where they have adapted to the area’s frequent electrical disturbances.  They incorporate a variety of metals, predominantly gold into their outer biology.  Like living lightning rods, they are able to harness electrical strikes to power their immense bodies.  Their presence is generally beneficial to other creatures as most lightning in the area is drawn by them.  They are semiaquatic in nature, making routine trips from the deeper parts of the lake to the southern cliff faces to feed upon various plants and minerals.  Due to their size and biolithic nature, few but the most vicious hypervores generally pose a threat, which Goldons combat with huge discharges of stored energy, which can be amplified when herd members share energy fields to form super circuits and generate their own localize electrical storm.  Height: 190 to 285 feet.

Hill Fish:  The Hill Fish is a large, terrestrially-adapted angler fish which has become a highly evolved florafauna.  The various ferns, mosses, and shrubs that coat its mineralized skin, and root-like tendrils along its ventral surface provide it with much of the sustenance it needs, and so the Hill Fish usually acts much like its namesake.  It is usually during its reproductive phase that it becomes dangerous.  All Hill Fish possess a small tree-like growth just above their mouths, and during spring this tree will bloom and become pollinated.  In order for its young to grow, however, the Hill Fish requires a more meaty meal.  The flower’s scent is strong enough to entice many browsers, which then become food for the ambush predator.  After such a feeding, the tree-growth’s fruit will ripen, each containing larval Hill Fish.  As it is no longer a danger during this phase, herbivores that consume this fruit will carry and deposit the young fry in new hunting areas.  Length: 28 to 46 feet.

Icarus Tiger:  These large felines prowl both the deepest Super Jungles and highest mountains of Skull Island.  Despite being more massive than any average tiger, their honeycombed bones, quite unique among mammals, allow for increased relative strength, speed and agility.  They are highly adept at swiftly bringing down prey with grasping claws and saber teeth long enough to puncture major blood vessels and tendons.  Their true power, though, stems from their cooperative strategic hunting tactics.  Icarus Tigers mate for life, females usually being white with black stripes and males usually being black with white stripes.  After many years of working together, an Icarus pair can become so effective as to maintain a 100% kill rate.  They hunt more infrequently than most other predators, then, and mostly target sickened and/or aged individuals, ultimately helping to maintain a healthy ecology.  Length (not including tail): 25 to 30 feet.

2. vodyanoy- if only it had the twister ability.
3. gesura- if only it liked chocolate though that food is toxic to most animals.
4. goldon- having it be able to use electricity make sense as gold conducts electricity.
5. hill fish- that frog fish takes flora-fauna to new heights.
6. icarus tiger- that's what i call teamwork.

somehow i feel the Goldons could had been a prey for either Kong or Gorosaurus (before Ghidorah) due the sheer size, and admitingly just the idea of a lightning Brontosaur Kaiju with a super powerful tail is in on itself awesome, would love to see something like that on a kaiju movie or an animation.

i can imagine pods of Vodyanoy can generate a whirlpool covered in algae to trap prey, only vaguely similar to how the Shrewster did it's tornado.

Looking great as usual.

How about mixing The Giant Behemoth (1959) with a bit of Lagiacrus / Kuarusepusu as a sort of giant nothosaurid?

Transapient In reply to Bhaltair [2019-01-17 16:50:56 +0000 UTC]

Huh, thats an idea.  I had thought the Behemoth to be a bit too similar to the Rhedosaurus.

Bhaltair In reply to Transapient [2019-01-17 19:21:06 +0000 UTC]

Behemoth's movie did kinda copy stuff from Rhedosaurus's movie, at least. I was gonna suggest that yet-to-be-named kaiju from "Howl Beyond the Fog," but I felt Behemoth might've fit a lil' bit better.
Alternatively, you could put Behemoth on Mu if you ever do an ecology series with it like Skull Island.

On a different note, I do have a bit of a 'basic' list of ideas. Mind if I were to send some of them via PMs?

Ah yes, the short film itself is an adaptation of the short story, The Foghorn, which was one of the initial inspirations for Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
And feel free to.

Hold the phone, I just came across something rather unusual...  I was just glancing over the credits to Beast From Haunted Cave, and it says that the beast was created and portrayed by Christopher Robinson...  I guess Haunted Cave's in the messed-up part of the Hundred Acre Wood.

😂🤣 That’s why Christopher was reassuring Pooh and friends there were no heffalumps and woozles: he was even worse than any of them!
Have to say, that is one odd-looking monster. I love your take on it: I adore symbiosis and parasitism in nature!

I tried looking around, but there really isn't a whole lot of clear shots of it, even in the movie.  Here's a link to a wiki article I found if it helps any: non-aliencreatures.fandom.com/…
You can also find the full film on Youtube.  If you don't want to mess around, I think the best look at the titular monster begin around the hour and five minute mark.

I love how you managed to incorporate the Ultra Kaiju into this unique, beautifully strange ecosystem of Skull Island like the Gesura and the Goldon with the latter being a sauropod. The Icarus Tiger look lovely and majestic in the art and they both scream Shere Khan to me for some reason. Awesome work!

Transapient In reply to Lediblock2 [2019-01-17 04:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're right, I wasn't able to find out more about the Shrewster until after I had already drawn out the thing.  In the end, I opted for a more basic approach, more in design only.  Sorry if it's a bit unsatisfactory.

Indeed, it would've been interesting to see a creature like that in motion.  And who knows?  It's not unheard of for movie sequels to sometimes retool unused concepts.  Perhaps there's a chance something like it could appear in Godzilla vs Kong.

Could've sworn the Hill Fish was partially based on Gobul from good ol' Monster Hunter, thanks to its terrestrial lifestyle and vegetation-based lure. It's still awesome, though - the reproductive cycle in particular is just deliciously weird.

(Speaking of MH, there's also a pair of wolf-like monsters, one black and one white, that have a cooperative fighting style. Couldn't help but think of them when reading the bio for the Icarus Tiger.)

The Cave Haunt and Goldon are also amazing, there's something about a sentient fungus and giant sauropod lightning rod that just blows my mind.

Huh, I wasn't aware of either of the two monsters mention in MH.  I suppose I'm still quite the novice in that regard, as I was only introduced to the franchise within the last few years by a friend.
