The Second Tiberium War has been raging for 210 Earth years, and the devastating conflict has wrought catastrophic ecological damage upon the biomechanical world of Tiberius, homeworld of the Tiberians and source of Tiberium, the mysterious crystal that powers them and their technology. The core of Tiberius has begun to fail, and with it the natural production of Tiberium on the planet has ground to a halt. Two factions face this impending disaster.

The Galactic Defence Initiative, seeks to maintain order on Tiberius, as well as prevent the spread of Tiberium on populated worlds. Tiberium, while a valuable resource, is highly contagious and an infestation can easily doom a world with a carbon-based ecology, as it infects and overruns anything it touches.

The Nod Empire is a newly-risen political power on Tiberius that seeks to spread Tiberium across the galaxy, and in doing so increase the standing of Tiberius and its people at the expense of all others. Fanatical and extreme in their cause, they will stop at nothing to see the Galactic Defence Initiative crumble and their ambitious agendas fulfilled.

With Tiberius' natural resources all but expended, the war has spread across the galaxy, leaving Tiberius an empty husk with little strategic value. Both GDI and Nod plant Tiberium on carbon-based worlds in the hopes of producing new resources, but while GDI is careful to never endanger sentient life, Nod is not so careful and will happily wipe out whole races just to get a slight strategic advantage in the never-ending stalemate.

The Kodiak, command ship of GDI commander and rising star Mammoth, is in pursuit of the Leviathan, ship of the infamous Nod leader Avatar, damaging the Nod ship just as they both prepare to enter warp. The damage to the Nod ship shunts it backwards in time, causing it to arrive in Earth orbit in the year 1995, decades before the Kodiak emerges. Nod takes the opportunity to seed the unwitting planet with Tiberium, and departs to enact repairs. In the year 2047, the Kodiak emerges from warp as normal to find a desperate planet stricken with Tiberium infestation. Forging an alliance of convenience with humanity, Mammoth's GDI forces move to harvest the Tiberium on Earth, to save humanity from extinction as well as provide an advantage to the war effort. However, Nod is not so willing to leave their harvest to their enemies, and they return to Earth and initiate hostilities with the GDI forces stationed there. The Second Tiberium War has come to Earth, and humanity is caught in the crossfire...
