Description
Multimation Film
July 30, 2010
Watch in Best Quality via YouTube
This is my first short film ever, I made it from start to finish in just two weeks, tell me what you think!
For my first short film I wanted to convey simple tale of freedom. I came up with a story of a girl who literally becomes what she envies and dreams about. In the end, the girl trades up her humanity for a simple life flying infinitely as a crow in a painting. I wanted to convey more art forms in an already great art medium, video. I love animation, drawing, and painting, but don't see them together a lot. I hoped to achieve a good balance and mixture of these mediums in my short film, Crow Unbound.
I started making my film July 14, 2010. I finished the video on July 30, 2010. It was made on my personal iMac. I used Adobe After Effects to help start my rotoscope process. Afterwards, I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to do all of the main animation with a Wacom pen and tablet. I pulled all of the clips together and did all of the major editing in Final Cut. For the music I turned to the royalty-free Apple Loops provided by Garage Band and did any mixing within Final Cut.
◆◊◆Episode № 24:"Making My first Short Film"◆◊◆
I make art vlogs via YouTube that show my art being made in a time lapse, I talk about the meaning of the piece, sometimes everyday life, and I hold mini contests with art prizes as well.

I really like this film of yours, excellent work!
I'm not quite an artist, I can only agree with the many complimentary things the other deviants have said - but I especially liked the detail at the end, where the sketch of the crow which featured in the beginning now was an empty outline - a deliberate detail, I guess? It seems to show the story has come full circle, it gives it that sort of complete, whole, feeling to it. And that she completed the crow, or likewise that it completed her.
But, well, yes! Excellent work!

I'm happy you noticed that. The drawing of the crow disappeared along with the girl into the painting to live. Whether an artist or an appreciator of art, I enjoy hearing the words of both, and both are just as great and important to me, and equally artistic
Hope that sounded right?
Thanks so much!

I'm happy too that I had noticed it. I've been trying lately to develop how I look at pieces of art, details, etc. Well, learning.
That sounded perfectly fine! I imagine that creating art is also it's own way of appreciating art in itself, and the appreciator takes note of the skill required in crafting a piece of art, so they would go hand in hand, and be of equal artistic merit, I think. (Now I hope I sounded right...)
You're most welcome!

This is without a doubt the best film I have seen in the six years I have been a member of deviant. I believe you have accurately depicted the hope and fear that resides in the subconscious of most artists. That is to transcend mortality with your creation by living on through it, and the fear of becoming so lost in your work that you lose touch with those you love and love you. This is a powerful and wonderful work. congratulations a well deserved daily deviation.

That is really a great compliment! Especially for this being my first film and whatnot. You described it in such a great way. I hope to create more short films in the future for everyone to enjoy. I always try to push my boundaries and give my best even in new things, the DD to me was a reflection of the effort I put into my art in a way.

in the six years i have been looking at art hear at deviant this is with out a doubt he most amazing thing i have seen in the film category. i feel you have taped into part of the artistic subconscious with this.i fell i have witnessed greatness in the making.every artist to some existent desires to transcend from the mundane into the supernatural through there work and achieve emotionality through there work.

I love this.
What programs did you use? (Also, how long did the painting take?)

I used PhotoShop CS4, Final Cut Pro, and used Apple Loops for the music.
You can actually go here to see the painting being painted specifically for the short film via YouTube. I'd say I spent about 6-8 hours on the painting? Can't always remember when I get in the zone of painting lol Thanks so much ^^

That was absolutely stunning. It was a little creepy, but at the same time very beautiful. The loneliness the girl suffers is heart-wrenching.

YAY!!
I really liked this
how long did you have this idea in your head before you started making the film?

I originally wanted to enter this film contest on YouTube and had just 2 weeks (no joke, I spent 2-3 days filming, and sat all day editing and animating!) to come up with an idea and execute. I sketched out frames in my sketchbook, all I knew was that I wanted animation and crows. I gave myself a headache trying to figure out a story for it that would reflect myself and my traditional art, since film making is very very new to me. I had fun though and want to try my hand at more animation. thanks so much! ^^

Aww you wrote a paragraph for me to read! T^T
People usually write a sentence back to me XD ha ha
I have a animation idea in my head and I think I'm going to hand draw it,
at first I wasn't even going to think about making it but then
I saw your film and I just thought I had to for some reason!
Inspiration maybe? What I'm thinking is going to be a hard thing
to do for a first timer, I've had the idea for a few days now
and I can see it perfectly in my head. So.. wish me luck!

I can't help but at least sketch out any idea in my head that wants out. If I don't make it now, I can look through my sketchbook for past ideas, and pick and choose for those days where inspiration doesn't want to come. Go for it! I wanna see! Good Luck too

In my opinion, something very deep, from the very within of the artist, the wish to fly away from the world of sorrow and forget the sadness.

I love your art in this, and it does have a nice calm mood to it.
But still, I could not relate or understand what it was trying to tell me without reading your description. It just came off as just another abstract video with pretty images to me.
I can understand if it's meant as something personal that you can relate to best, but for me it was nothing special. It's a pretty good effort for a first try though, and in only two weeks!

TransientArt In reply to Zae369 [2011-01-01 23:33:20 +0000 UTC]
Mmmmhmmm yeah, everyone relates differently very true. That's what great about art, there's so many different types for different types of people. Some people want meaningless pictures, others want realism for it to mean something, etc, you know? I've seen a woman cry at a picture of flowers, when to me it was just a pretty picture of flowers lol. Thanks for the words too, I'm glad you thought it was pretty if anything ^^

So the acting wasn't really perfect, but I'm no critic. Or maybe I'm misinterpreting how the actress was supposed to be portrayed?
Either way, it was very stiff and yet, that added to the mysterious element of the theme: Reality vs. Art... or maybe "Dream?"
I enjoyed it very much. =3

I was the only actor available, so I really don't blame you there, my acting is terrible! I so would've used someone else if I could have lol. Personally I'm bad at portraying my emotions and turn to my art to do so, I guess that reflected in my 'acting'.
Thank you very much X3

Wow.....just wow!!!
I really love how the charcoal crow becomes 'alive,' and how the scene of the crows flying becomes a painting. Especially the transformation of girl to crow.
Pure win! XDD
