Description
Multimation Film
July 30, 2010
Watch in Best Quality via YouTube
This is my first short film ever, I made it from start to finish in just two weeks, tell me what you think!
For my first short film I wanted to convey simple tale of freedom. I came up with a story of a girl who literally becomes what she envies and dreams about. In the end, the girl trades up her humanity for a simple life flying infinitely as a crow in a painting. I wanted to convey more art forms in an already great art medium, video. I love animation, drawing, and painting, but don't see them together a lot. I hoped to achieve a good balance and mixture of these mediums in my short film, Crow Unbound.
I started making my film July 14, 2010. I finished the video on July 30, 2010. It was made on my personal iMac. I used Adobe After Effects to help start my rotoscope process. Afterwards, I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to do all of the main animation with a Wacom pen and tablet. I pulled all of the clips together and did all of the major editing in Final Cut. For the music I turned to the royalty-free Apple Loops provided by Garage Band and did any mixing within Final Cut.
◆◊◆Episode № 24:"Making My first Short Film"◆◊◆
I make art vlogs via YouTube that show my art being made in a time lapse, I talk about the meaning of the piece, sometimes everyday life, and I hold mini contests with art prizes as well.

I am layman in films production. What I say, I do as spectator. You captured my attention from beginning to end. And in the end I felt something very sweet and positive. Excellent immersive and creative narrative. Congrats!

Thank you very much, It's fun seeing all these comments on how connected people say they were to it. It gives me confidence that I went in the right direction when creating this. I hope to keep taking the right course when I go to make my next one on my own as well

Deep, I really like the animation, and it lets you imagine wathever you want, like an open ending.
It didn't need the best effects to let the magic reach you.
I'm personally a Crow LOVER, so naturally I like it, but everything else is just as good.
Great job!

Very poetic. I like this kind of autofiction and all the metaphoric angle. To me, it describes very well the creative process behind each work of art...Bravo!!!

I wish I could give a proper technical critique, but I'm hardly an expert at film, but I will say that your use of imagery, symbolism and mood is inspiring. I loved the concept and how you presented it, and of course, the crows! The silent movie elements were an especially nice touch.
This was enjoyable to watch; I wish I could favorite it five times, lol.

I'm no expert at film either, self taught here lol. Just thought I'd try my hand at my first short film since I love watching them. I did try to put some thought into the storyline and have it all reflect on the style of art that I paint and draw. Thanks so much for the words

This is really well done. The animation is superb. You did a really good job with the brush strokes on your animated arm. It really helped to reinforce the whole "art piece about and an artist and her art piece" vibe.

It was very new to me, this is only my second attempt at animation ever (don't have the training, so I had to teach myself the programs esh! lol) Luckily I've got patience, but only had 2 weeks to make the film.
I hope I can achieve better quality in the future when I try out making another short film after learning from this experience I definitely tried to make a story about art inside art and the artist in a new way. Thank you so much for the kind compliment. Makes me want to make another short film in the future.

love it!
I love the transitions between the painting and the real world. I also really like the idea behind the movie.
btw, did you do some 3D tracking for tying up the animation with the live action footage?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TransientArt In reply to rahulnsm [2010-12-29 17:21:25 +0000 UTC]
I used a rotoscope effect to help track myself frame by frame in After Effects. I used filters and hand drawn rotoscoping for it in Photoshop especially the flying crows and transitions etc. I only had two weeks to make the entire thing from start to finish or else I would've loved to hand draw every single frame. XP
Hopefully next time I'll have more time to up the quality, but this was only my second animation ever after all, so who knows? Thank you very much

Thank It was my first real short film ever lol. Some people said to me they were sad when the woman became 'trapped' in the painting. I liked to think she became what she wanted.

Thanks! I actually love the ending, I like the thought of being able to give up material goods and going beyond to a different place for pure emotion. Maybe I'm being kind of silly, lol, but to become what you dream of even if it's the simplest form is something really neat.

This is beautiful! I love your drawing style, and the painting at the end has such great colors. I also really like the background music- it really drew everything together. It sounds like the colors in the painting, if that makes any sense.

You are so welcome! Just to let you know, because of your drawings (particularly "Valerie) I've put more detail and shading into my latest drawing than I've ever done for something I wasn't being graded on. I didn't know it was possible to create something that awesome using just graphite! ^^
Heck yes David Bowie! Thanks, and I love your avatar too--such great lines!

I have a lot more graphite drawings, I just haven't gotten around to scanning them and putting them up! I'm so happy I was able to inspire you with your art, I know others art inspire me to get better all the time, even yours. It's amazing, some of the things I've seen done with just graphite.

I'm sure if I was a critic I'd be pointing out a million things wrong with it! lol In a way I still see everything wrong with it, but I look at that mindset as a way for me to want to continue to improve. Thank so much! ^_^

See thats what alot of people that put out work think all the time (even me), we look at all the things wrong with it and think its will bite us in the backside but in truth most people never even notice it. Its not a bad thing to think that way tho. It mentaly sets a bar for next time.
lol sry mini random rant.
