Description
I had a fair number of people asking me how I made the borg arm for my Vriska cosplay, so I went ahead and made this tutorial thing. Here's to hoping that people find it useful! Now, I know that this tutorial is very poorly arranged, so if you've got any questions, fire away and I'll answer as best I can. And if you do anything with this, I'd be thrilled to take a look at it!I used a couple of tutorials for this myself, specifically Anniina85's stocking arm tutorial and Amethyst Angel's plastic automail tutorial.
EDIT: Oh man, this thing is so full of typos. I'm gonna have to fix those at some point.

Thank you so much! I just bought everything I need.
I think I bought the wrong foam though..... it caught on fire and I didn't even have it close to the flame ;w;

You're very welcome!
It caught fire? Eek! I've never heard of that happening before. Just plain old craft foam sheets of any brand should work. All I can think of to do is to hold the foam over the burner for less time- it only takes a second or two for the foam to get malleable. You might try turning the heat down a bit, too. Either way, I hope you can get your combusting-foam problem solved.

Eh... I'm not entirely sure what you mean. If you're asking if I was specifically making an automail arm, the answer is no- I made this for my Vriska Serket (Homestuck) cosplay.

I wonder why no one is using plaster bandages to create Arm-Armour etc. they are cheap and the surface makes a better "metal imitation" than foam or ABS Plastic. Yes, it may be a little heavier, but not that much.

Traumagician In reply to Alexander941 [2013-09-15 00:18:49 +0000 UTC]
Hmm. That's actually an interesting idea; now I have to try making a small piece of armor with plaster-cloth. I can come up with a few possible reasons for why people don't use plaster bandages for armor, though.
Firstly, it's not terribly flexible, which means that unless you made it really loose, you couldn't slip a plaster armor piece over your arm like you can with the bicep piece of my arm. Even if you opted for the 'clamshell' method that I used on my forearm piece, you'd have to find some other strong, bendy material that could keep the two plaster pieces of the clamshell bound together- the plaster's not very heavy, but it's still heavy enough that foam strips would tear. Secondly, well, it's not very flexible, which means that it's brittle when it's in pieces as thin as craft foam is. You'd either have to make it into thick pieces, which would be bulky and hard to move in, or you'd have to risk it cracking and crumbling whenever someone at a convention bumps into you. Thirdly, it's hard to make small, detailed things like the finger-pieces out of plaster-cloth; it doesn't sculpt well and you can't really bend it over and glue it onto itself.
Even though plaster bandages make a really nice 'metal imitation' type surface, foam and plastic are easier to work with and more flexible, while also being quite cheap (especially the foam, I got mine for 67 cents a sheet). I guess that's why people use them a lot for armor.

I made such things a long time ago with a friend of mine, single parts were joined with wires.
I think i'll try something like sheet metall in the thickness used for beer cans, could be interesting, but drawing the patterns sure will be difficult at first.

Traumagician In reply to Alexander941 [2013-09-15 13:14:57 +0000 UTC]
Oooh. That would be quite tricky, but it could be very interesting. You'd definitely want to coat the edges of the metal with something smooth/soft before you put it on, though, or you might end up cutting yourself. Let me know how it works out!

Alexander941 In reply to Traumagician [2013-09-15 16:36:42 +0000 UTC]
I will try to bend the edges and put something soft between them.

:0 oooOOOooo thank you!! I'm flattered I'm always learning! I always look at armor tutorials cause there's always room to improve technique! My style of making armor is similar to yours, I JUST started working with foam armor it's actually pretty easy just... tedious @_@. I love your weathering style!
But for trolls, especially when you first meet them they're young and so I get super excited when people draw them as their actual age and so the braces made me fangirl pretty hard I think it's pretty much perfect. Also Vriska is my favorite

Traumagician In reply to clockwork-eden [2013-09-15 00:37:18 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!
Hrnggh, I so know what you mean by the foam armor being easy but tedious. It's just simple enough that you get really, really bored when you work on it, and just difficult enough that you can't get really involved in something else when you're working on it. My solution was to watch really stupid movies that would keep me borderline entertained, but wouldn't distract me from actually working. Glad you like my weathering style!
Yeah, it seems like people tend to draw the trolls as if they were twenty-year-olds rather than teens. :I But hey, now you've got yourself a 13-year-old cosplayer, complete with braces! Vriska's my favorite character, too.
