Long, lower, wider, better.
As for the nacelles, it can easily be conjectured that for this hull type, a nacelle with a lower vertical profile was required due it's proximity to the hull, as tactical considerations demanded. So a reworking of the "plumbing" was effected that did not impact the engine's performance and still allowed good clearance.

I'll recall that one brief bows-on shot of Reliant from the film after Kahn had hijacked it, as it was coming in to attack Enterprise. All they did was make its forward spotlights red, but it was enough to tell the audience that they were no longer one big happy fleet.
