What words can do justice to matters of the heart? This painting is eloquent indeed. Does the girl solve the conundrum? I suspect not. Like the proverbial happiness, grasping it has proven disastrous. And yet it is an eminently hopeful piece, as if the attempt, the involvement is itself worthwhile.
I love the contrasts, warm and cool, bright ahead, dark for what has died (and those pesky arrows of recrimination). The image of doing a jigsaw is so much what love is NOT about that I feel the conundrum is really that the girl has yet to realise that "working it out" is the wrong approach. You clearly understand that, for he many contrasts (live and dead butterflies, warm head and cool flesh) convey this better than my words, at least, can.
Thank you for posting the progress GIF. I hadn't appreciated from the final image that you are a really good draughtsman. But what I like even more is that you are willing to let that go, for the sake of artistic expression.
As a digital piece, you fake the freedom of watercolour very convincingly. In my experience, real watercolour dribbles are not nearly as accommodating! I would have preferred if you had really wrestled with the medium rather than telling us /about/ a wrestling. So I have knocked a little off technique. Your skill cannot be faulted. Unfortunately, no matter how perfect you make it, it will always be a /description/ of a watercolour and can never become the watercolour it is trying to convey.
If I have qualms it is that the piece is rather too cognitive. It is a little too "worked out". I don't think I'm unusual in experiencing the raw reality of this kind of conundrum is /in essence/ inarticulate. Yet this piece is more reflective than passionate. It represents how we tell the story afterwards - when we have made our peace with the issues and have found images we feel adequately express it. So I cannot give full marks for vision, even though there is true and deep insight here.
This is a brave piece (I suspect borne of the heart). Often those things that touch us in our deepest, softest middles turn out to be the most universal. With this you have truly hit that spot.
