Description found this unattributed color shot of an xb-51 coming in for a landing:

this airplane is one of my favorite jet-age wonders - so i took out the sun-damage and spots as best i could, and adjusted the color a bit. no idea who owns the photo but guessing it's usaf public domain. apologies if it's not.

It was a very innovative machine...
A pitty it didn't make it to series production...Β Β
...and the Airforce got the 'Canberra' / B-57 instead... Β

There really wasn't much wrong with the Canberra, though. Β Look at its record!

Β  indeed...
A design, rooted in WW2 and some still in service in early 21st.Century must have something right.

the Canberra was planned as a replacement for the Mosquito - a remakable plane in its own right.
Built from 'non-strategic-material' and mocked even by the RAF, it later earned the nickname 'Wooden Wonder', for its speed and s.k.o. Stealth-properties. (Wood makes poor radar-reflections)
At night, she was nearly invulnerable, and it took Hi-Performace Night-Fighters like the Heinkel 219 to get them in he dark - and this was late in the War...

They replaced a famous classic, with another classic...

...and b.t.w. 'Oldy but goldy', I've just red, that the British used them until 2005 in Afghanistan for Anti-Drug-Operations...

P.S.
One can be seen in the Sinsheim Technikmuseum www.bredow-web.de/Sinsheim-Spe…

My late Uncle flew the Canberra, which was so tough of an aircraft that it survived his having to make a belly landing and returned to service! There is one at Wings over the Rockies in Denver, too.

It is... VERY difficult... to praise the legendary Mosquito enough. Β Just an incredible aircraft used to pull the feathers from the Nazi eagle's tail. Β AND STEALTHY!

Germany tried to build its own Moskito (same name!), the Focke Wulf TA 154.
Only small numbers, mostly prototypes were built.
The Glue-Factories were bombed, and so the shortage of Hi-Tech-Wood-Glue prevented a mass-production...

P.S.
We should stop here and make a new Canberra- / Mosquito-Tread, before we go too much off-Topic...Β Β

I'll look up the Luftwaffe plane, but I don't have too much more to say 'sides 'Thank you!'
