It was a 20 gauge version of the .410 "Snake Charmer", which came out in the 70s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Chβ¦

you may be on to something, though.Β the snake charmer came out in 1978, the kimel in 1979.Β maybe it was a marketing response, a competitor, to the snake charmer.

generic term, i've seen/read about a few of them.Β never saw or read anything about the kimel specifically.

It was made in Italy for Savage Arms as the KK1. A .410 model called the KK2 was also built. On the barrel was engraved, "Do not fire from shoulder". Nothing on Wiki about it.

i've been researching all morning, and the results are confusing and sometimes contradictory.Β the italian model was a different gun - it was the k20 and had a pistol grip.Β kimel industries apparently was an importer/distributor located in mathews, nc, and they assembled shotguns from italy and cheap pistols from germany.Β my kimel kamper, the 20ga kk1, was built by savage in westfield, ma.Β it's so stamped on the barrel. (it also says,"do not fire from shoulder" - d-uhh!)Β
why savage licensed anything to kimel, i don't know.Β savage no longer provides any historical info on their guns. i've identified a historian (probably a retired savage employee) who does, but my first mail to him was returned yesterday as undeliverable.Β i then found another address and re-sent my letter. now i have to wait and see.Β i'll let you know if i learn anything.Β Β Β
