BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2001
First attempted in February of 1998, RED ALERT was among the first characters I worked on after I had decided to feature an icon-form representation of every Transformer. Based on a sketch I drew based on his star appearance in AUTO BERSERK, the imediately following results met with my satisfaction for quite some time, only interrupted by a colour update due to the lulls of the ailing computer monitor I had at the time. It showed the contents with increasingly fading brightness until a new monitor revealed the colours of his helmet to be virtually pink. That was easily enough corrected, but somehow he has been one of the most difficult Autobots to mirror.
SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011
As the new era of updates commenced, it soon became clear that RED had to be embiggened in order to get his details into proper perspective. The general angularity of the upper half of his helmet gave me a lot to scratch my head about. For some reason, the shape and balance of his particular face and eyes were equally niggling elements. In 2009, he finally started to look enough like himself for some satisfaction to mount, but it must be said that he always wears me out when I work on his features. The tweak level has been extraodinarily high with him from the beginning. So, while I thought the 2011 update was quite good, the size still was insufficient to support every detail to its full extent.The current version feels acceptable -- but you never know!
