So much better looking than that overlymasculine disaster with jet engines in the warp nacelles and a bunch of other stuff that makes no friggin sense in the Abrahms films.

I can read people arguing about stuff like effects of water pressure on hull and so being impossible/possible by TOS or JJAbrams canon and while I am inclining to the side of it peing possible even for good old TOS Connie to get underwater, there are other things to take into consideration IMO, namely: how are the bussard ramscopes handling the water, how are RCS thrusters working in water ('cause I doubt that using impulse engines is wise when underwater seeing as it is forbidden in spacedock...) and photon torpedo tubes shouldn't really be put in use until after someone clears all the ice that will surely form on the wall from the remaining wetness once the ship enter the space again.

I've heard that the Tech in this reality is 50 years ahead so maybe when they designed this ship they built it with the ability to enterΒ atmospheres. Voyager could enterΒ atmospheres.

from here .

...which features a stunning shot of the Enterprise rising up out of a body of water. According to journalists who have seen the first nine minutes of the film, the Enterprise is purposefully hiding there. Only one problem, though: It could never happen.Raymond Wagner, who has a PhD in electrical engineering and works in the space industry, told Badass Digest going underwater is the kind of thing that simply wouldn't be built into the capabilities of the spaceship. "Like most spacecraft, the Enterprise is designed to keep between one and several atmospheres of pressure in, while the ship itself is exposed to the vacuum of space," Wagner says. "This is a very different job than keeping out the pressure from tons of sea water over your head." For every 33 feet the ship descends into the body of water, Wagner says, the pressure would increase by one atmosphere, "and it won't take much depth to generate some crazy pressures!"

You forget the shields, structural integrity fields and reinforced hull possessed by Federation ships. You cannot relate the hull of Starships to the space shuttle, think of it more like a Submarine Hull. If they built the hulls like a traditional spacecraft one Torpedo would be enough to wipe out half the saucer. Also note in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" the Enterprise was able to maintain atmospheric flight with the impulse engines. Sulu also mentions without main power or the shields the ship would burn up in the atmosphere (no shields and no structural integrity field = bad news). So what you see in the movie is possible according to TOS canon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

harroldsheep In reply to Athane [2013-09-27 21:17:49 +0000 UTC]

as, yes, but in STID, the shields do not look like they were on. Β also, i MIGHT think this would be possible if the JJprise was the same as the TMP one, but apparently, even though the visual cues state otherwise, the bloody thing is about as big as the Enterprise-D. Β something that is 3/4 of a kilometre just doesn't erupt from the ocean without a) falling apart as it tries to displace the water above it and/or b) cause a tidal wave that just might wipe out the indigenous population they just saved.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Athane In reply to harroldsheep [2013-09-27 23:26:14 +0000 UTC]

Its a little over 300 meters long, making it slightly larger than the TOS Enterprise, but it is still small compared to the Enterprise D....the Vengeance does come very close though. The Nibirin people were on the top of a large cliff at least 30 to 40 meters tall, the Enterprise wouldn't create a tidal wave big enough to reach them, though the beach they mentioned would have been hit by large waves.

Also the shields in the movies are not a bubble around the ship, rather a thin layer around the hull like in Nemesis. So they do not appear. Someone created the JJ Enterprise in mincraft, the scaling of the movie is a little off on the shuttle bay and Engineering, but all the other interior and exterior shots fit perfectly within the 300 meter dimensions. Plus the movies tech is years ahead of what it was in TOS.

unfortunately, it seems that the ILM guys have stated it's 725m.

Athane In reply to harroldsheep [2013-09-28 02:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but every single visual shot except one shuttle bay scene from the first movie states otherwise....Even in the first movie when pikes shuttle leaves the shuttle bay you see that the doors are wide enough for one shuttle to fit through, not the 3-4 that would fit if the ship was scaled to be 725m...also the article you link provides more proof of a 366m Enterprise, as opposed to the 725m. If they scaled the ship to 725 they skinned it as a 366m ship....which would mean GIANT windows in every room...most of the windows you see on the ship would be 1-2 decks high...even the Bridge view screen would need to be much larger to support the large Enterprise idea. The visuals don't support the idea.

harroldsheep In reply to Athane [2013-09-29 15:19:23 +0000 UTC]

I agree completely with your assessment, but the official line is that the ship is 725m. Β  Β I hate JJAbrams.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Athane In reply to harroldsheep [2013-09-29 21:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Question then, why does it matter.....just because it was modeled at that size, and skinned to be half its supposed size, and shown 90% of the time to not be that size doesn't mean you have to accept it. Even so, it doesn't matter what size the ship is supposed to be. The original series was always about being what they needed when they needed to be it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

harroldsheep In reply to Athane [2013-09-29 23:32:36 +0000 UTC]

it matters because it shows how little real thought into the established "science" of Trek that the makers of NuTrek are making, which is essentially JJ pissing all over what makes Star Trek something to look up to. Β and i worked at ILM so i know how much this arbitrary scaling up/down of something that should have been established in stone bothers the artists who work on such a project. Β because these things are loving designed and built, and when some idiot up-n-coming director with no respect for the source material comes along and craps all over those designs AND the fans, well, then i get a little miffed.

so when you look at my fan Trek stuff, i do my research and lots of it, to make sure that it "fits" into established canon.
