Description
Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!No doubt, some people WILL disagree with me here, with including the Metalheads into this collection at all. Nevertheless, I think that these days there is a link between Goth and Metal. And most of the people who watch this collection or have faved my work seem to like metal, so it wouldn't be right to leave them out!

Really? Then maybe I should! Only problem is, all the pictures would have to be re-drawn because their resolution is far too low.
Thanks

I find these so fun and informative to read! I also like how you'll mention one or two bands that might fall into a certain catagory. It's helping me build a strong music collection. I love sampling.

I must agree with black-Sword when he says,"I consider goth to be primarily ideological, where Metalhead is obviously a culture based on music taste," because I think thats really a big part of the distinction. Other then that, yes, they do both have a tendency to be drawn to darker things and there are some overlaps in music and clothing styles. I would say that typically, a metalhead leans more tward the goth side when they start wearing more makeup or make their look more... extreme. I guess it does't really matter though, it's all in how one thinks.

Trellia In reply to Exit-locked [2007-03-18 17:28:10 +0000 UTC]
That's a possible distinction, but what does it mean when a person primarily listens to metal and dresses metal, but also likes dark and mystic culture (as many metalheads do these days). Does that therefore make them goth?

MetallumJazz In reply to Trellia [2009-09-01 22:15:52 +0000 UTC]
Not really... Im definitely into dark and mystic culture but it wouldn't make me a Goth or a Metalhead Goth (as Ms. Exit-locked has stated below)... in the same sense I enjoy a lot of Psychedelic and 70's Rock... and at the same time I listen to a lot of 80's Rock/ Pop (Huey Lewis & The News, Phil Collins, Bon Jovi, Tears For Fears)... I dig Alternative Rap to a great extent... and my second favourite genre happens to be Jazz... I guess Id very well be called a Hippy, Mainstream, Rapper, Jazzhead, Metalhead Goth?
Also a lot of ideologies spawn from that musical taste... mainly developed during the Thrash era when more society themed songs were bought out... then the arrival of Prog/ Tech Metal where a lot of bands centered around Philosophy, Sciences aaaand... Gothic imagery... yet the Gothic imagery thing seems to be the only aspect thats highlighted most of the time...
There's a lot more things I can say... about clothing, behaviour, eras and whatnot... but maybe a discussion for later...

Hm, well then I guess they really would be a Metalhead Goth. Then again, that would mean there could be an infinite number of goth tyes... Emo Goths, Folk Goths, Nerd goths, Supermom goths, Doctor goths, Dance-Major goths ... anyone belonging to any catagory of people who also happens to like dark and mystic culture would be concidered a goth. I think maybe in order to be a goth, dark and mystic culture has to be primary over their other culture. Otherwise, they're people who happen to have a liking for goth stuff. As for the Metalhead goths, because they do seem to go together alot I guess it works out

Stratovarius, Metallica, and Cradle of Filth Kick ass
I am one to say that Metalhead and Goth are 2 seperate sub-cultures, But they seem to be merging, and the metalhead look has evolved to appear more "Gothic". This is what I consider a perfect example of 2 subcultures that can overlap because they don't contradict each other in any way, and therefor leaves some people as part of 2 subcultures. Though I don't consider metalheads to be actual Goths, I still think it fits in with your series because of it's relation to Goth. I myself have been called a Metalhead quite often and it hasn't made me any less Goth. I consider goth to be primarily ideological, where Metalhead is obviously a culture based on music taste, So I can see how it works. and it is also true that many Goths get stereotyped into listening to Metal, and Metalheads into being Goths.
I do recall that the Metalhead was actually put into comatose by Punk, which evolved into Goth. When Punk died, metal came back, so i guess That would make The metalhead the abused little brother of Goth
wow I just noticed how much I rambled, and I could say more. This is one of my favorite kinds of topics. But one last thing. How "Gothy" would you consider Power Metal to be? I've noticed a few Power Metal bands can atually be Kind of Gothic with regards to the environment the music sets.
and what do you think of Black Metal in these respects?
I loved this one. yet another i can relate too. Love your work as always

MegalithArtMalta In reply to Black-Sword [2012-11-22 20:18:10 +0000 UTC]
I completely disagree with you. Firstly Metal originated before Goth and therefore it cannot possible be a sub-culture of something it doesn't predate. The origins of Metal and Goth are also completely different since Metal originates from Rock which originates from blues and Goth originates from Punk. Also for some time Punk was considered to be a bit mainstream or maybe a better term is the Golden Age of Punk just like the 70s and 80s were considered the Golden Age of Rock and Metal that however doesn't make Metal the "abused brother of Goth". That's like saying that Goth is the abused little brother of Techno or Hip-hop, which is stupid.
Clothing wise Metalheads are also different but very similar since we tend to wear band T-shirts combat boots and jeans or camo-trousers. Goths wear black stuff and some use white make-up.
Ideological we Metalheads are also very different then Goths. Goths are very gloomy, depressed and seeing death as a means to solve their problems while Metalheads just don't care weather they are alive or dead. What I mean is that while Goths go to a cemetery in search of melancholy, Metalheads go there to raise the dead and have the greatest party in history.
Lastly Power Metal is impossible to be considered as Goth. While maybe some lyrics might be slightly similar (ex Stratovarius do mention a lot of fear if I remember correctly) that is not enough to consider them Gothic. Remember Gothic music is very dark, melancholic, and slow while Power Metal is quite the opposite. Black Metal is also definitely IMPOSSIBLE to be Gothic....that's just heresy. Black Metal originates and therefor is the extreme version of Trash Metal and there is nothing related between Trash & Black Metal and Gothic.
The only style that could be loosely related to Gothic is obviously Gothic Metal (which to me is kind of contradicting) and maybe Doom Metal since it uses the same slowness that is found in Goth music.
With all that said I must make it very clear that I DON'T hate Goths in anyway...I just believe that the two cultures are completely different and shouldn't mix.

It seems to me that 'goth' pretty much *comes* from the merging of Metal (which is all about fear) and Punk (which is all about not caring what others think)....
On a similar track, how can anyone listen to early Black Sabbath and insist it's not 'goth'?

Black-Sword In reply to alphatroll [2010-01-19 00:42:00 +0000 UTC]
Well what these genres mean vary from people to people. I would hardly say that anything from, let's say, Stratovarius is all about Fear. I personally see metal as a more gothic form of music than goth rock itself, at least in the architectural sense of the word. What heavy Metal always creates without fail, regardless of it's extremes in Tempo, melody, what have you, is a sense of Grandeur. The music is designed to overpower and belittle the listener. It is designed to present itself much in the same way a God is. Gothic architecture is designed to make you feel small and insignificant, and to make you feel like there is so much that is greater than you. Heavy metal Attempts to achieve this very effect, to dwarf and humiliate (As in, to make humble) the listener. This creates a very devoted following. certainly there are followers of all types of music, but few are met with as much dedication, and even elitism, as heavy metal, and the other forms that do have such a following are usually burried far deeper underground, Goth Rock and Industrial being a prime example.

Metal really only gives that impression if you're not very familiar with it. A lifetime of listening has taught me that *all* metal is about things the *author* fears. I dunno about some of these newer so-called metal bands, haven't heard 'em all, but that's the root of it.
Hell, look at Ozzy. Have you ever seen a more painfully desperate bundle of fears? I'd swear the guy's afraid of himself.
Actually, that doesn't even seem far-fetched.....

I would agree with pretty much everything you say there. That Goth and Metalhead cultures are still separate, but still have points of overlap (much like Punk/Goth and Goth/Cyber).
Heh, I was actually going to mention Black Metal in this one, but I've found that Black Metal fans often protest more than most at being called Goth. Plus, Black Metal fans are comparatively rare compared to fans of general metal. But perhaps I'll cover them too, when I feel brave enough.
Thank you very much!

Haha, I listen to Cradle of Filth. Many so-called 'true' black metal fans say they aren't really black metal, just 'extreme gothic metal', so that's the merging I suppose. I also agree that Rammstein (an industrial band I love so dearly) have experimented with gothic styles and much of their lyrics seem 'gothy' to me.

That's not entirely true. Ancient is a great gothic/black metal from Norway, and are very respected by the metal community; plus they play some sick ass music!
It would be just ignoarnt to say that certain behaviors (fascination with darkness, satanism, mythology) in the black metal community have no connection whatsoever to the gothic movement.
I for one, as a black metal fan, fully support covering the black metal scean in your gothic installments. I look forward to it.
Take care

OMG! I was at work the other day bagging (God what a miserable and lowly job) when These 2 Goths showed up. They were really Gothic in appearance (Fishnets, Chains, spikes, etc.) but I noticed that one of em was wearing a dragonforce shirt, and the other was wearing a Stratovarius shirt. Not only is it rare for people to know about Stratovarius in the US without being extreme Metalheads, or knowing one (Outside the US they are really popular, especially in Japan and scandinavia). What i found odd though, was the fact that neither of the bands have a Gothic image, and it instantly made me think of you

Yes, I tend to agree that they are distinct and separate, but that the two cultures do have so many cross-overs (especially in recent times) it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the other (you could say the same for Punk in relation to Goth too).
