Description Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!

No doubt, some people WILL disagree with me here, with including the Metalheads into this collection at all. Nevertheless, I think that these days there is a link between Goth and Metal. And most of the people who watch this collection or have faved my work seem to like metal, so it wouldn't be right to leave them out!

As with all my work, this is copyrighted. Do not use it without my express permission.

Well, although all negative opinions about Gothic Metal by many people, I personally think Gothic Metal is a gothic music. But with some points to be explained: while DarkWave, PostPunk, Death Rock, Gothic Rock and other genres are the gothic music of the Gothic Subculture from the 80's, Gothic Metal is the gothic music of Heavy Metal. Gothic Metal doesn't want to destroy or claim the Gothic Subculture for itself. It just wants to use the term "gothic" to describe the atmosphere of its music, considering that this genre gets inspiration from Gothic Literature, middle ages, supernatural creatures, dark and romantic atmosphere... As an universalist student of Gothic universe (I want to embrace all the dark, obscure and deep arts no matter if it is from this ghetto or from that ghetto), I loved that you included metal in the gothic spectrum when many others try to refuse it.

Well done work and greatย guide to Gothic style ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™‚
Some people are calling us who listen symphonic metal Goths, but we usually aren't (through some like me still love Gothic subculture and love different styles of Gothic fashion, but I prefer to wear just ordinary black clothes so people won't notice me, wish I was more brave about it because I really adore it)
Don't know why people still call Nightwish a Gothic band, "The Angels Fall First" album may have some elements of Gothic metal but after it there is no longer such a sound, it became Power Symphonic Melodic Metal, so I agree there are differences ๐Ÿ˜‰

Theatre Of Tragedy,on the other hand, is Gothic Metal band I like, Liv Kristine has so sweet and warm voice, still listening to her ๐Ÿ˜Š

I listen to all kinds of different music, including metal. I was raised mostly by my dad, who listens to a lot of metal, so I guess it rubbed off on me.

Ha!ย  If there is any subtype I may fit into then this would be it.ย ย  Found this page by accident, was intrigued by the types, and came to the realization that since I've moved I have not found a good club of any sort.ย ย  So, definitely time to look.ย  Any suggestions about the Cincy, Dayton, Columbus area let me know as well.

Anyway, in the 30+ years I've gone into any Goth club I've always felt comfortable and had a good time.ย ย  Never dyed my hair(when I still had that), never wore makeup, but for sure I always did enjoy the artistry that was always on display in attire, makeup, hair, and personas by those who are Goth.ย ย  Just me and my concert shirts, leather jacket, denim, boots, occasional chains and rings.ย  I never dressed as a Goth but still it was always a fun, friendly experience and always a good music mix when I went to the clubs.ย  Probably helps that I've always had Goth friends and in-laws to show even if I am a non-conformist/outsider; I'm still a kindred spirit.ย ย  Appreciation for the comfort of the dark, the mystical allure, and the 'go-your-own-way' attitude helps make a Goth club have that enjoyable ambiance when I'm out for a full night of music, drinks, conversation with those closest to me.ย

So yeah, I still occasionally put in the Marilyn Manson- but make no mistake I'm not posing.ย ย  Still not posing when I say that my favorite group of the genre are the Sisters of Mercy. My tastes also range into Rammstein, NIN, and to now- Chevelle. ย  I may plink along to the Eagles, Anthrax and Pink Floyd on my Bass.ย  But in the end, I'm also just another person who finds a refuge in the Goth world.ย  I can embrace this Goth type as a label which is good since I have spent a good amount of time in your world in quite a few countries. So, from a Metalhead kinsman,ย  cheers!

I have a wide range of musical tastes, from typical Goth/gothic-like standards to some modern Pop songs. However, being a fan of many of the same songs and bands as my father, I kinda-sorta fit here.

And don't worry, it's no big deal you included the Metalhead in your collection; a lot of subcultures tend to overlap, and this is no exception.

Like to add that the modern connection Metal has with Goth is through Doom metal. Bands like Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride were death/doom bands, but had Goth sensibilities. Ex. Draconian Times by Paradise Lost had strong Sisters of Mercy influence.ย

Marilyn Manson should be in here too. Not just baby bats listen to his music. id say the band fits inbetween th industrial subculture and metalhead. however neither one seems to want to associate him with their subculture except for baby-bats. XD

I agree with this. I believe that back in the Spooky Kids days though, the band were kinda popular with goths but ever since then Manson has been seen as a joke and a sellout. Regardless, Manson has made one Goth Rock album in 2007, but should otherwise be referred to as a Metal/Industrial artist.

Well, I consider myself to be a goth metalhead. My fashion tends to cross these two types together, not to mention the music I listen to is symphonic and goth metal. I listen to other genres of metal as well, along with classical, ethereal darkwave, and cinematic soundtracks. Like romantic goths, I find beauty in darkness, and buy also somewhat of a nerd b/c I love anime and comic books. I like dark literature and fantasy books as well. I'm vegan and am involved in social justice campaigns. But, in the end I don't forgot my Mexican roots so sometimes I even combine traditional indigenous clothing with goth elements. Sometimes, you can't really categorize yourself because there are so many intersectionalities that comprise who you are. But if I had to label myself, I'd say Latina goth metalhead.

COol!!! Hahahaha the definition is funny. But it obviously defines a "Gothic"-metal fan so, nothing to do there.
Rammstein is industrial metal, NIN not. NIN is even electroindustrial POP.
I remember years ago Trent "bigmouth" Reznor saying HE created the industrial music.

hahaha.

It's nice to know that there is someone who tries to understand Metal culture to incorporate it in his/her art. However Goths and Metalheads are very very different, Goths are mostly depressed by life and think that death will solve their problems, while we Metalheads don't give a damn about if we're living or not, we are more happy go lucky type, happy if we're alive and not minding if dead. Also musically Metal originated from Blues and Gothic music is closer to punk. Although there are a lot of Gothic Metal bands it's not fair to classify Metalheads as Gothic, in fact some of us get annoyed by that comparison. And Nightwish is a Symphonic Metal band rather then Gothic Metal.

Other than that your art is pretty good.

Please refer to this TV Tropes article to see what Goth is and isn't. Being depressed about life and thinking about death =/= 100% goth: [link]

neurotoxine In reply to MegalithArtMalta [2012-10-16 20:03:52 +0000 UTC]

What nonsense.
Metal came not from blues. ROCK came from blues.
Heavy came from what black sabbath did. And they are the origin of the spooky, dark, sinister atmosphere that mixed with the first "heavy" rockers.

Then, the angry antisocial non-systemic punk ideas rendered the metal more violent and social focused (European Thrash). While the more theatrical ways that came from sabbath themselves re-created by european metalheads became what we now know as black metal. The craving for more brutal stuff became known as Death metal.

The sub-genres and infinite categories just got the things more messy.
Doom, gothic and "symphonical", started to introduce new people from strange angles into the metal mix. The real mix happened when the heavy and distorted guitars were introduced to play "gothic"-metal and when the Doom variant became slower, more sad and tried new instruments (from the metal point of view).

The Industrial Metal came from another variant that was born with the Industrial Music (Throbbing gristle), then the Electroindustrial and the addition of distorted and unsampled guitars to the mix. The pioneers were Die Krupps, then Frontline Assembly, finally Rammstein. Being the last one the only "electrometal" act that was never electroindustrial at their beginnings.

A gothic band is Bauhaus ans Sisters of Mercy. I see no punk there and that was the original Goths.

Metalheads, Industrials, Goths are all sub genres of music. The problem is, everytime the last ones take an electric distorted guitar, they call themselves "xxx-metal" and so, they are under the METAL wing. They wear in black, they drink wine instead of beer, they cry instead of growl, they go to the graveyards lucking for melancholy while metlaheads go to graveyards wishing the deads wake up to start an insane party.

ANyway, these stereotypes are just that, generalizations. Be as you wish, hear what you like, draw what you dream.

I agree on most of what you said, your information is much more elaborate than what I intended to write in the first place.

Yes you are right Rock is the direct 'descendant' of Blues but since Metal is a variant of Rock (and Big Thanks to Black Sabbath for that) you could say that it originates albeit not directly from Blues. That is what I meant. Regarding the issue about which is Gothic and which is Metal things are very very confused. My opinion on things is that Goth is more influenced by certain Punk traits. Should there be Gothic Metal? I honestly don't know, musically it might make sense to have Gothic Metal
because both styles contribute for the creation of the latter BUT it's definitely wrong (my opinion) to classify Metalheads as Goths for the simple reasons that we have different ideologies and 'culture' when compared to Goths. Also the core/root music is definitely different in style.

Happy Metal

Hell no! Metal isn't goth. As someone who is both a metalhead and goth I find your statement extremely ignorant and offensive. Knowing the difference is important. Goth music is 80's rock, synthpop, and new wave. Metal is not goth ever. In fact most of the goths I know hate metal.

nice work, but metalheads are absolutely not a goth type: we have both the same tastes but the fundamental differences are that goths are depressed by life and metalheads are happy about death (and also life, of course) and also that these cultures just have absolutely not the same origines: gothic movement is born from punk and metal is born from blues. Moreover, metal and gothic music doesn't sound the same, and don't speak about the same subject, )even if there is a lot of gothic metal bands) People can make a melting of our two cultures but they can't say that metalheads are gothic. If you speak with a metalhead, never say to him that he's just a kind of goth, or he would become angry
