Description

Expertly stirring the combination of eggs, meat, and veggies that were currently cooking on the stove, Sonny checked the time. There was no way he was going to be late today. He pulled a roll of aluminum foil out of a drawer and pulled the tortilla out of the warmer. With great care he transferred the contents of the pan to the tortilla and quickly rolled it up. Grabbing the essentials, he made his way out of his apartment and down the stairs.

He was shocked when his phone rang, since nobody called him this early. Smirking at the name that appeared on the screen, he answered the phone as he turned the corner.

“Ollie! Listen, I swear that I didn’t so much rob the bank as I… took all its money.”

“Oh, very funny smartass. I’ll remember this the next time you want legal advice.”

Sonny smiled. He and Yumi loved to give their lawyer a hard time.

“I just messing with you man. Thought it was weird for you to call so early.”

“Well, I should be sleeping in, since a certain lead singer would not stop texting me last night.” His voice shifted to a higher pitch. “Ollie, can you believe he hasn’t called me? I got through all this trouble to set up a blah blah blah.”

Both men laughed. Of course, they both adored Yumi, but couldn’t help themselves sometimes. The three of them had developed an almost sibling level closeness since working together.

“Right. Yeah man, she was wigging out something fierce about how the date went. You looking for the details too?”

“Actually…”

Here it comes.

“Did she mention anything about her sister?”

“Dude. You have her number. Call her.”

He heard Ollie groan.

“You know it’s not that simple…my whole…you know.”

And once again Sonny was thrust into the role of record label psychologist.

“Oh my god Steph, we did not have sex! It wasn’t like that!”

“Yeah yeah, so you say. Yumi said that he didn’t hit her up until after midnight. We assumed it was because he was too busy hitting you…”

“SHUT UP! I mean it Steph. This was…different.”

“So you’re telling me that you, a modern day Valkyrie, meet this Adonis of genetic perfection, and you two didn’t...”

“He touched my spot and I didn’t get turned on!”

Catherine froze, realizing that she had said that way too loudly in the hotel lobby. She quickly lowered her voice, there was an emotional strain to her voice that only her sister could understand.

“I…really like him. And I think he really likes me. Not the uber babe Valkyria, the little Katie side of me.”

“Whoa. Sis, I…that’s awesome.” She heard Steph take a breath. “Well, I promise to not give you any more shit until you get back. But only if you figure out why Ollie hasn’t called me! We’ve been chatting on social media for over a week, and I’ve sent him six images in that low-cut top of yours.”

“Steph I’m not going to spend my date…wait, did you stretch that $250 top that Yumi bought me over your ginormous traps of doom??”

“Oh! Shit, I think Becca’s honking outside. Gotta go!”

With a huff, Catherine stared at her phone and made a note to dip her sister’s thongs in tabasco sauce.

Laughing to himself, Sonny carefully opened the door to the hotel so to not drop the burrito or the two coffees in his hands. He saw her wave from across the lobby, and his heart leapt to the skies. Without even realizing his body was doing it, he strode towards her with earnest, and to his surprise, was met with a soft kiss.

It took him a moment to recover, until he saw her nose crinkle happily. Thankfully she broke his lovesick delirium.

“Sorry. I’ve just been dying…”

“…to do that again.” He finished, causing them both to blush. “I…uh…feel free to do that when…”

“Likewise.” She said before he could finish.

They stood there a moment, staring dreamily at the other, before the warmth of the coffees brought him back to reality.

“Oh, I grabbed myself a coffee on the way in, wasn’t sure what you liked so I just got you the same as me.”

She took the coffee slowly from him, and sniffed it cautiously, almost as if she was afraid of it. Her expression grew to delight as she took a sip.

“Wow! Wow, this is just…wow! What is this?”

Sonny cocked his head in confusion.

“It’s a Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha. I never thought it was that special, Yumi says my taste in coffee is boring.”

She took another big drink.

“It’s just, I’ve never had coffee before. Thank you.” Before he could ask her what she meant, she gestured to his other hand. “What’s that?”

Glancing down, he remembered the breakfast burrito he had made.

“Oh, well, my cousins stayed here once why visiting from Samoa. They complained about the breakfast, so I figured you’d be hungry.”

Her smile told him that his assumption was correct, and he unwrapped one end before she grabbed it and took a massive bite.

“Shwould mwe get going?” She asked with her mouth full. He smiled brightly, and noticed that she stopped chewing for a second, almost like she was in a trance.

“Sure! It’s about a forty-minute walk, so we should get there right when they open.”

Catherine was over the moon. Not only did she have what was arguably the greatest breakfast ever and drink coffee for the first time in her life, but she could listen to Sonny talk for hours. She hadn’t realized how much talking she had done yesterday and was perfectly pleased to learn more about this man who was continuously sweeping her off her feet.

“So, after my grandmother got sick, my parents decided that they’d move to Samoa to take care of her.”

“That’s so sweet of them. I’ve never heard of anybody doing something so considerate.”

She silently swooned as he shrugged his massive shoulders.

“Might be cultural. Speaking of cultural. How did you finish a degree without ever tasting coffee? I mean, from your appearance it makes sense if that’s not part of your diet. I know that I have periods when I’m really conscience about what I put in my body, but I thought Americans loved coffee.”

The question brought on a bout of harsh anxiety in Catherine, and she struggled to come up with a rational answer. He knew about Tora, and by proxy had figured out about Missy, surely she could tell him the truth right? It felt as though his peripheral vision was staring through her façade, and she answered without thinking.

“I’m a tea girl. All the way. I…like the way it’s relaxing but also can help you wake up if need be.”

Yeah, that’ll work.

“I could not agree more! Plus when you’re on a fitness regime you can usually find some really healthy teas. I’d love to hear some of your recommendations.”

They came to a stop at the crosswalk, she could see the store up ahead. As much as she loved talking to him, it was eating her up to lie to him about these things. And of course, as they crossed, another question arose.

“So what type of workouts are you into? Crossfit, powerlifting, traditional? I don’t mean to sound forward, but you seem to take very good care of yourself.”

Again she was torn with what to say. She knew nothing about fitness in the slightest, and the panic was starting to set in once more. As the reached the other side of the street, she turned to look him in the eyes. He frowned at her expression, and now she was worried that he’d think he’d done something wrong.

“Sonny, I… I really want to be honest with you. I don’t like ly…”

Her admission was stopped by his lips meeting her own. She felt his arms wrap around her torso and pull them closer together. The kiss was unlike anything she had every experienced. It was like when somebody touched her spot, but yet different. There wasn’t an uncontrollable sexual urge… well there was, but not the same.

She equally wanted the kiss to lead to more, but also didn’t want it to end. Amazingly, her much stronger tongue willfully submitted to his as it explored her mouth. When it finally ended, they were both panting. He leaned forward, touching his forehead to hers.

“You tell me when you’re ready. Don’t feel the need to craft stories to sate my questions. But if you need to do so in order to answer me, I will never hold it against you. Just never lie about your feelings. That’s all I ask.”

She smiled weakly and kissed him again, this time allowing her tongue to dominate, in her own way if was an admission of what she felt he already suspected. A few moments passed before she let up, and the two locked eyes.

“That’s a promise I can definitely keep.”
