Description
Tommy Richardsen // Trichardsen // Facebook // 500px // Google+ // InstagramAs the aurora season is coming to a close up here, and the bad weather lately hasnt really permitted much northern lights photage, I thought It was due to post what I think is the best image I have captured of the season. ( shot at the 14. of november during the sickest aurora night I have evern witnessed ).
I based the edit on the poll I posted about which colors is most pleasing to look at, so this is edited with very cold temperature to bring out the blues in this.
really hope you guys like this.
Shot with nikon d800, iso 1600, 14 mm, 6 seconds exposure. Shot in sørkjose, troms county, northern norway.

I DO like it, because we don't see this kind of event this far south.
Seems like the green color has gone violet. Interesting.

Yeah I set the color temp very low compared to how it should be for this one.

Thank you so very much.
I looked at this when I had shot this, and thought to save it as the finest shot of the season unless I was able to capture a more amazing aurora.
Very glad you like this.

It really is an amazing capture and I know enough to know that shooting this kind of shot takes a lot more set up and preparation and know-how than just pointing and shooting. So you really have my respect for this entire series. I have truly enjoyed it as I've never seen the Northern lights in person before. But you have really brought this beauty as close as I may ever get to it and I sincerely thank you for that!

This one is definitely a winner!
Great work!
6 sec. exposure, interesting! Do these northern lights move fast?
I'm just curious, is it better to expose shorter or longer to achieve these gorgeous effects?

Trichardsen In reply to BokehLight [2013-03-11 21:01:30 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much.
you wont be able to capture the speed of the aurora unless you have a ridiculously high priced camera, like the Red 5.0 Epic pro at 50k $, it moves on average about 400km/second ( 250 m/s ).
Normaly you want to overexpose the aurora a bit, if you go with what the camera suggest it will be too dark and you are left with an image that is hard to get any details out of.

BokehLight In reply to Trichardsen [2013-03-11 21:22:46 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!
And thanks for the info about the aurora. Really didn't know that it moves that fast. This is indeed a very interesting subject. I need to read more about that.
The only experience in night-time photography I had was with cityscapes when I was starting photography with film and later with digital. I always used the bracketing technique to get decent pictures
Have you ever made pictures with longer shutter-speeds at, let's say, ISO 100 - 400?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Trichardsen In reply to BokehLight [2013-03-11 22:04:52 +0000 UTC]
Night captures is an artform on its own, and its rarely the same settings that will work.
Ive shot a few with lower iso, but since I have the nikon d800, it rarely is any problem pushing up the iso.
