the capture is very good in terms of 'catching the right moment' e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="334" title="Nod"/>
also the bokeh in the background is very nice
unfortunately the light is not Your 'ally' here
The duck, which is Your basic model,
got somehow covered by the dark shadow e.deviantart.net/emoticons/f/f… " width="15" height="15" alt="

Your camera focused on the bright (enlightened) part of the picture
which caused overexposure of the water reflectig the light
and overshadowing of the main subject,
even so, the duck's feathers got such a nice reflex e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l… " width="19" height="19" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="577" title="La la la la"/>
My advice for future photographing:
- take many pictures of a subject from different perspectives
- use different camera settings while shooting
(change them, experiment )
You deffinitely have the instinct of a photographer
just have to work some more on technical matters e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="

This photo's composition is perfectly fine for the most part, however, I think it could have benefited slightly if it was more symmetrical. The duck could have been placed in the center of the vertical axis so that it and its reflection occupies half the frame each. I think this works better for reflection shots in general. The bokeh is harsh and distracting, so less of it would be better in this case. Ducks are a common subject, but you have presented this one in a unique way. It's hard to tell how interesting the subject is considering that the duck is underexposed.
The sun is interesting and balances the image very well, but having such a bright light source in the frame makes the dynamic range suffer. The camera can't properly expose for both the dark duck and the brilliant sun. I see that your fence photo (and "Winter has come") also includes the sun, so maybe getting a graduated ND filter may improve your work which will let you expose bright and dark things in the same frame. It's something that cannot be done in post and may be a worthy investment to you.

Thank you very much! I always appreciate a good critique!
Hehe, you're now the second person from that thread who said the duck is too underexposed. In this case the sun was very harsh directly reflecting from the water so the duck was going to be more of a silhouette and I'm perfectly fine with that. I was looking for the effect of the water and the drops at the end of the day and since the ducks - like you said - are quite common and therefore can be a bit boring on their own.
About the filter - I have used that (for example here: triinerg.deviantart.com/art/Gr… but I don't find there to be need for it at all times. Like the photo "Winter has come" - I didn't use anything there, I just left the sun out of the frame (and the reflection from all of the snow must've done the rest
).

Oh i like this light. It makes lovely reflections on surface of the water. Bokeh on the background makes nice athmosphere. Sadly face of duck is littlebit too dark. But still i like this foto.

Thanks for the critique! I appreciate how you've thought it through.
The duck was supposed to be more of a silhouette in this. The water and the drops were my main focus and I didn't want to overexpose them. But you did give me thought: maybe next time I take backlit photos like this I could use a fill flash.
I've only used that with portraits but maybe it could help with animals too.
