i've always wondered about the cover of the book. i mean, i figured it was Daisy and all, but did the artist create the picture AFTER he'd read the book?

The artist painted the cover before the novel was even complete, which inspired Fitzgerald to incorporate the eyes in the form of the billboard for Dr. T. J. Eckleburg.

I viewed the cover as God watching over the events that happened, and will see all your sins

This is so beautiful - I would love to see this with the white framework present on certain incarnations of the book cover, as I think it would make a lovely poster.
Great work!

thank you! you're too kind. I never thought about making it into a poster, but the Gatsby cover is definitely something I wouldn't mind having on my wall :]

just finished that book last week, it's amazing!
btw I did a bit of research into the original cover, and found that the illustration was not done for the book, Fitzgerald saw it and picked it for the book a few years after the piece was finished.
and after reading the book, i'd change that smile on your piece to a frown

cute, i fell in love with that book over when we read it in lit class, I personally believe that it is gatsby who is the eyes and the lips on the cover, he is often described as beautiful, and the tear drop next to the eye is the same aura that surrounds daisys house,

Regardless of the lack of nudes in the irises, I actually think this gives a better image of Daisy in relation to the book. (My favorite book ever.)

Gatsby is one of my top five books of all time, easily. People either adore it or loathe it, in my experience.
This is beautiful. I love what you did to update it.

My class didn't get to read that book though. We had to read This Side of Paradise (which I didn't think was half bad ;D).
I heard he gets shot in that book though

Amazing! I haven't yet read the book (but I want to SO BAD), but I've always seen the cover and thought it was one of the coolest designs for a cover. And your take is awesome too.
I love how it bears a pretty striking similarity to the original cover, but at the same time it's got it's own different flair so you look at it and go "Oh! The Great Gatsby...right?...right?....maybe, I guess...but....uh..."
But anyways, supercrazycool. Great job.
