Description This is my final project for an animation class. This was done in flash and photoshop.

The criteria:

Keep it as close to 15 seconds (title card excluded)

It should work without sound

Yeah that's not a whole lot is it?

Shoot For The Moon is a play on the phrase which means to 'attain great heights'. But in this case, it's taken literally.

Title card, is a parody of the old Dreamworks logo which seems appropriate enough. Now that I think about it, it's probably a bit off for Paul to use an axe as a fishing pole (0.0 It looks dangerous)

So what happens is that Paul noticed something is behind him, and it's the Big Bad Wolf. Apparently the full moon turns him into a fierce beast. Paul however decides to shatter the moon by shattering by hitting it with a rock and drain the wolf of his powers.

The context:

Paul is one of those characters where they remain unscathed when it comes to slapstick. Just like Morticia from Addams Family and Jerry from Tom and Jerry (For the most part). He knows how to turn jokes back at others. The Big Bad Wolf has never been able to lay a finger on him, and so he challenges him. Sadly, he's one of those characters that don't win very often in a slapstick battle, like Tom from Tom and Jerry for the most part.

It wasn't easy to get this done.

Storytelling wise, considering the short time limit, comedy will have the most entertainment factor. You can make someone laugh is a really short time if done right. The 15 sec really puts a limit on your creativity. Well, in some ways it is. You know those commercials on TV? They do wonders with just 30 sec or even 15 secs. It's short but condensed and comprehensible. I guess the time limit forces you to get the essentials first. Longer means more work for me to do anyway. DX Just doing 15 secs is already killing me.

Animation wise, trying to do beautiful Disney-esque animation takes a long time. Every drawing was all made from scratch, frame by frame. First get the movement and timing right, then filling in the details. You'll also have to check for proportions and making sure everything is in the right place. I could be spending at least 4 hours drawing for a 2 second animation. And don't forget about the color, it makes things more tedious than it already is. The background, it's fairly simple. I just create a like 2 backgrounds from scratch and use them to create the rest. Cutting and pasting different parts so it fit my layouts.

Despite the hard work for such a short scene, I can't help but feel satisfied from all the hard work I put in. Hopefully I get better. When I do, I may do animation commissions ( which will NOT be cheap)

Though I think I can improve on it. I may considering doing an extensive revision under the 'director's cut' label, which will included improved pacing and redrawn animation. But for now, this will have to do.

Hope you enjoy it. Take care!

I love it!

Though something that bugs me, Big Bad Wolf is right next to Paul when he roars at him, but in the next frame when he slapshots the rock into the moon, he's gone.

I think you would have to give it time to load. Just when I barely upload it, it shuffles the scenes until later.

See?  It feels so good to draw a great animation, so I don't get why this is a dying art.  It frustrates me so...  I wish Disney movies would go back to this already...

Anyway, this is fantastic!  I do want to ask, did your animation class teach you to animate traditionally?  I know you worked on a computer, but frame by frame is what I'm interested in.  I personally find frame by frame to be much more appealing to the eyes, and I AM interested in classes, I just don't know if there are any that teach frame by frame around here.

It's all about money really. A cheap movie like Chicken Little still makes a lot of money. Princess and the Frog was great, but didn't make as much.

I guess it's like what they say. Hand drawn is like writing a letter, but CG is like writing an email.

Well, it's mostly self taught. My classes only teaches me how to use the programs which is flash. For any animation, you do frame-by-frame. For computers, you move your puppet bit by bit. The traditional way, you make a drawing for every frame. Whichever kind of animation you want to do, you'll always start with the same basic principals.

I understand, really I do, I just don't think it's a good reason.  But I suppose if I were to start my own animation company, I'd go bankrupt through the second feature, haha!
I don't know, they call it "Disney Renaissance" for a reason.  It's not like they were loosing money making all of those great animations, mostly frame by frame by hand no less.  Chicken Little was kinda legitimately bad, but the Princess and the Frog had a noticeable decrease in animation quality...I don't know why.  Watch even something newer like...Lilo and Stitch or Treasure Planet, and they STILL look better than the Princess and the Frog sadly )=  It's a shame too, I really like that movie.

Oh I see.  Thanks!  I was just curious...I'd LOVE to study animation.  But as it stands, I'm going to have to teach myself ^-^  Not like I mind though!

Disney's history was never the smoothest. Heck, a classic like Pinocchio and Fantasia failed to earn money due to WW2. Those ambitious almost drove him out of business. Walt Disney then gambled with Cinderella and found success for about a decade. Then with Walt Disney gone, the animators just didn't have a good sense of direction anymore. So they began training new recruits, who had a rough start. Until the Little Mermaid came and started a new decade of success. Disney sank again after Home on the Range and rose again with Bolt. There's a lot of things to tackle in whatever circumstances they were in. Whether if it was war, on the verge of bankruptcy, timing, telling the right story, finding the right people, moving onto computer animation.

Princess and the Frog was a beautiful film, even on par with the old classics. The story was meaningful, animation is crisp, characters are likable, and songs are catchy. It had everything it needs to be a classic. It does however almost felt like it was trying to be like the how animation was back then rather than being something unique. I think that was what kept it from being an all time classic.

Oh no, you definitely should get whatever classes you could find. Every little thing helps. I recommend life drawing, which is vital for quality animation.

Wow...this is really gorgeous. The Disney-esque (as you put it) animation here certainly does remind me of Disney. His eyes, his smile, and his even his movements. I can tell you put a lot of work into this. I don't know how animation goes really, but you certainly put a great spin on the werewolf, and such a charming way to take it's threat-level down a few notches. Disney is known for making amazing stories with very little effort, and you've proven you're capable of the same. Again, fantastic work!

Well, I looked at more from Dreamworks animation. At least, the hand drawn ones back in the day. But people from Disney did move there so yeah. I can see potential in my talents. I hope it becomes something great in the future. And thank you.

Graphic designers are in demand these days. It'll be  a good career for you. Animation will be tougher, especially if you want to do hand drawn. And Thank you.
