Description
An attempt on how I draw an entire bird. This is also pretty old, three years at this point, but most of it is the same. (I am triruntu, this account is the only one i have that's r-20 and there is no free name change)
The subject for this was 243. Wallcreeper . A nice and simple little bird with a fun wing designs. I use photoshop with a rough chalk brush. Most of the painting takes place all on one layer minus the multiply and overlay layers. Sometimes I can do these in a half an hour but more detailed ones can take hours.
When blocking the bird in, the opacity doesn’t matter. It doesn’t need to be an actual block, since when you get around to detailing the thing it’ll be covered up. Feather direction is an important thing to remember and in this case since it’s the back of the wings and tail, you’ll be seeing the straight leading edge of the feather. For the face, it branches out from the eye in sections- the back in the cheek, forward between the eye and beak, and swooping back from nose to the back of the head.
I start non-primary/secondary feathers by blocking it in with a light color and then outlining it with a darker one. The less uniform it is, the better, as long as it’s not going overboard. Hatch line is just a preference of mine and it helps take up space.
Knowing the general anatomy of birds and the placements of feathers helps. I don't have anything on hand to help with that at the moment but there's other resources around.
