Description
It's good to be up and deviating again, and to mark my return, we have here my contribution to 's 2-D Rock Off Challenge. I chose Beauty & the Beast with a little steampunk twist. Now, the beast is a horrible clattering titan of iron and brass, skulking about his castle, searching in vain for a means to remove his terrible mechanical curse, laid upon him years past by a wicked inventor. Will the love (and ingenuity) of the young and beautiful Lady Belle help her to see the man beneath the beast and free him from his tortured form? This was a pretty intense piece to do. I started with a sheet of smooth finish bristol paper, since the texture is great for inking. Pencilling was all in H, ink work was a combination of of brush and nib, with highlights and corrections done in gouache. I then played with it a little in photoshop to adjust the midtones and give it a little color. I took the pale shade of blue since it felt right for the mood of the piece, and also helped to hide some of the more irregular textures in the shadows.
I'm very pleased with how this turned out. That being said, I hate drawing steampunk so much. I love the style, but when it comes to actually drawing it, it's agony for someone like me. But I'm glad I had a chance to work on something I know I'd never seriously work on otherwise. It's good to have projects again.
Too all my fellow competitors in the rock-off, the best of luck. I know I've seen many works that make me feel more than a little self-conscious about my chances, I just hope my entry's worthy.

Her arms are for some reason really confusing me. It's weird. The artwork itself is really awesome, and I love the steampunk idea.

I'm glad you like the idea, and, believe it or not, I'm especially glad that you had something constructive to say. Seriously. What about the arms doesn't work for you?

Anytime And it looks to me like her right arm is coming out of her left sleeve, and her left arm's angled slightly off compared to the left sleeve. It might just be me, but it looks kinda weird.

Dually noted. I'm glad someone pointed that out; I've never felt 100 percent comfortable with those arms and I'm really glad that someone on this damn website had the guts to say something. Thank you. I appreciate the feedback.

Lots of thumbnailing, and a good concept to work with. I mentioned in my description that it was part of another deviant's contest. He gives a concept, and we draw it. Steampunk and fairytales combined. Both are loves of mine, so it was fun.

I love it!
I rather wish that I had the calm mind for inking...I've ended up painting on computer because i'm too prone to making mistakes for Β£4 for 10 sheets Bristolboard

It's a tough skill to master. Patience isn't as important as a steady hand. I ink by hand, mostly, because my computer isn't very good

I have a long winded drafting process to cover up a lack of natural talent [red for structure and proportion, blue for interaction areas like cloth/hands/faces, normal pencil for the final draft] so by the time i'm onto the ink, i've usually been at it for some time...
I get impatient

Wow. So you take a really draftsmanlike approach to things. God, no wonder you get impatient. I'd go nuts. But hey, if it works, you can't argue with results.

I'd say it produces the best results I could possibly hope for...
The two versions of Schneider in my gallery [possibly the Heart's End sub-gallery] were both drawn by that method, as was the Murishoka line drawing.
I don't claim to be good even but it's better than i could manage freehand

Well, it's not like it can't be learned. Have you ever done any life drawing? I like to sit in on a life drawing class every now and then, just to loosen up.

Well, i can paint well enough to enjoy it so i'm not that bothered about inking any more.
I've long since gotten utterly sick of scrapping work because of a single mistake...

I know the feeling. I've got sketchbooks full of half finished inking projects that I just lost the will to finish due to a stray line or an unsteady hand. Frankly, I hardly do any traditional inking any more. Most of my work is geared towards acrylics these days. But that's illustration school for you.
