Description
August 2012 Contest Hall EntryEeepp this is my first time filling out a contest form (and doing one that isn’t a collab) so I’m sorta nervous. This will also be my last deviation until I scoot off on my mini Hiatus (gessh I hate that word)
Onion just recently learnt psychic, so I wanted to draw him using it as a sort of celebration. He still isn’t very good at it, since it requires concentration and patience to make it work. I had an RP with Liu the Chingling, who taught Onion, and I got this idea. Basically another world – the world inside our minds, which you enter when you use psychic. A bright line connects the minds together and that’s how you can make the move work. Weeeelll that’s how I see it anyways.
I’ve used traditional mediums to paint this (watercolours/salt/masking fluid) This is actually my second attempt since the first came out rather over-worked and muddy. You can see the first attempt here - scribblesofnostalgia.tumblr.co…

These colors are blowing me away, this is so utterly gorgeous! It's really hard to not muddy up watercolors, especially when there's as many as this piece, but you just knocked it out of the park.

Thanks so much!
I knowww, tell me about it! I was worried it would get too muddy, and because I was thinking about it so much, that's exactly what happened on the first attempt

Thanks so much! Yeah the salt was really good in this. I was worried it wouldn't work because the paper was super wet, but it looks so different when it dries!

Yes he dooooooes, you better all prepare for trouble.
This particular bakground is done with two layers! One massive rainbow wash, and then a dark one! And loooots of water to make it runny.

This is BEAUTIFUL! I'm so happy that Onion knows Psychic now...though once he masters it he'll probably cause a lot of trouble lol.

Liu what have you done!
I should draw a picture of them doing psychic...though I have no idea how I'd draw it. I couldn't pull off something this beautiful.

Can I blame everything on Liu from now on? Pfft XD
Id love to draw that scene as well! Perhaps during my upcoming holidays. Id love to see what you came up with as well

oh noes D: Liu didn't (still doesn't) know Onion's reputation lol. She was innocent and naive in all of this OTL
If I can get out of my art funk I will certainly try. If not I may draw the noodle scene lol.

ohhh wow the scanner did this one so much justice! I thought the picture was pretty, but the scan is incredible!
how did you make the paler dots in the background those colors? did you put the masking fluid over paint or remove the fluid later and paint over the spots?

tritn In reply to LumaKuma [2012-08-22 13:16:09 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much! Yeah well id expect a scanner at a design school to be top notch!
The paler dots are done by masking over a painted layer. Before I paint anything, I put a few blobs of masking down (for the white dots) then I give it a massive kawaiidesudesu rainbow wash, then i add more blobs of masking down (the pale dots) then i give the whole thing a darker wash and ta da.
I'm pretty sure I can dig up process shots if that would help?

Nah I think I got it! But how long do you usually have to wait for that stuff to dry. I'm impatient and will probably mess it up if I ever used it

tritn In reply to LumaKuma [2012-08-22 13:37:45 +0000 UTC]
Haha yeah if it's not completely try, it will screw up. It depends how much water you put down. I usually wet the entire page and then paint onto the water.. Layers take up to an hour to dry (for me anyways, my room is sorta dark)
I wouldn't suggest hairdrying it to speed the process, that usually scatters the paint D: ...unless you want that effect!

HYYYUUGGHGAHHAWAARRGH THIS IS SO PRETTY.
I love, love, love all the colors and textures in this piece. It reminds me of looking into a kaleidoscope, haha. You did an amazing job! The first draft looks pretty great, too. Good luck in the contest!
