Carmilla (2014-?) is a Canadian YouTube web-series produced, marketed, and published by U By Kotex. The show is inspired by the serial novella of the same name by Gothic writer Sheridan Le Fanu, and assembled into the collection entitled, In a Glass Darkly (1872). Β The original story is known as an early entry in vampire literature before the publication of Dracula, which it influenced in the use of first person narrative choice; a direct mention of Carmilla by Stroker; and similarities between Carmilla/Laura and Lucy and of Dr. Hesselius/Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. Β
The web-series differs from the original story in almost every way with the exception of setting (Styria, Austria) and character names. Β The series follows the the format of a vlog recorded by Laura, who is a freshman at Silas University the first season. The vlogs chronicle her pursuit to document her efforts at uncovering the source of the strange happenings on campus in the vein of a investigative reporter. Β Along the way, she meets a cast of colorful characters, including the titular character, who becomes her roommate. Β Β
I would recommend you check out the series. Β The dialogue, pacing, and casting are superb, especially for a web-series. The concept--which may sound silly or uninspired--works really well because of a tight narrative crafted through character development and interaction. In fact, the story is more character driven because of the documentarian use of web-cam, so the audience learns about key plot moments mostly through dialogue, but in natural ways that don't come off as forced or random. Β This story progression choice is assisted by the acting and really good casting choices, which again is exceptional for a web-series. There are plenty of crazy antics, witty pop-culture/cultural references, and homages to Sheridan Le Fanu (such as a character named LaFontaine) and his works that keep the story whimsical. However, there is layers of complexity provided by character development, especially in the second season.
Currently, the the second season wrapped up and a prequel was released inΒ October/November, but a third season has not been announced. In response, the relatively large fan base has been petitioning and showing support for the show through social media, hence the hashtags under the artwork above. Β
