Description
Having seen that dA is a Worldwide Art Community I am a little surprised that dA hasn't got any Language support for the major ones. This is just a Concept of how people could easily change their language to suit them better.
It would change the main menus on the site, things like the deviation titles can't be changed really but for the hard coded links and buttons I don't see how these can't be edited.
The flags are from the famfamfam flag collection found @ [link]

Yes, the world is going to be a very bad place. Because of prejudiced close-minded morons like you who know more about porn than global affairs. Travel why don't you! Open your tiny mind and GROW UP!
By the way, if you want to insult me, check my name. Irene is a dead parrot.

Sure sure, listen my little teenage nobody. The irony of calling nudes porn and then accusing ANYONE of being small minded is so funny as to be almost impossible to believe you are for real.
As for traveling I have been around the world 3 times, with over 35 countries and 5 continents, including australia and china. How about you? or does visiting new zealand count as "traveling"?
God i wish i was 15 again, the world is so much simpler and easy to solve all the problems.
I am done talking to you you hypocritical ugly little troll.

What's with all the "English only" comments?
Get over it people.
There are other languages besides English that are widely spoken around the world.
I mean, Facebook has the language option.
Why don't we?

In that case, this concept should definitely be implemented soon. I applaud you and your idea!

I think this is an excellent idea!
Even though I am an English speaker, this would be very useful if say for example I come across someone's art and I can't understand their discription, (which has happened to me a lot lately). I know I could just use Google Translator or Bing Translator, but both are pretty inacurate and are not the best things to use if your looking for the exact meaning.
So again, this would be a really good idea!

That's not how it would work, though. All this would do is change the default deviantart language. People's descriptions/comments/etc. will remain in whatever language they were typed in.
You still have to use google translate.

What would also be a neat idea if there was an option, like on Facebook, to translate the comments, submissions, profiles, etc. for those who don't speak their language as well. Sometimes I see art that is beautiful, but the description and title are in some other language (I think the most recent was in Russian) and I don't know if I should comment.
I would agree with all of you about just using Google Translate, but the results are very loose and inaccurate. It would be easier to browse if an actual, professional translator updated the website.

I think it's a good idea. It's got its pros and its cons, but it is still a pretty good idea. It would make it easier to navigate if your native language isn't English, and besides, a ton of people already write their deviation titles and descriptions in a different language, and post almost completely in that language. That's not going to change. Plus, if you're trying to learn another language besides English, then you could change it to that language and try to navigate the site that way. You'd learn a few new words that way, so it is a helpful idea no matter what languages you speak or are learning.
If anyone is saying, 'hey, learn English if you want to be a member here,' well, the majority of the content -- titles, descriptions (written in English, of course) would still be in English. That's not going to change. It would just be the menus.

Although my native language is German I understand English rather well I think, but I know some people who don't.
They're used to communicating in their native language - I think there's nothing wrong with that (not everyone is talented in learning languages!)
DeviantArt certainly helps these people to improve their English skills, in my opinion one shouldn't necessarily have to speak English to have access to this website though.
And I think this wouldn't "split us up", as most of the people I know would still write the descriptions/journals in English - or in both languages.
Personally I think a language support would be a good idea.

I have mixed views about this idea.
When I joined this community 3 years ago I knew only the basic English, Google translator was my savior.
I personally felt frustrated for being forced to learn a foreign language just for being able to share my art and I must admit it was helpful in school but in my country it isn't necessary to know how to speak it fluently (the lack of Art sites in other languages is another problem). However, after noticing that I was able to interact with amazing people all over the world just learning this language I feel like having a debt with this site, is like that harsh teacher of the school that you hate as a person but is the best at teaching lol.
The idea of implementing different languages in the site is good. The user who wants to interact with people of other countries will learn English soon or late by translating their comments or in the school, but it would be good if is a choice of every user and not an obligation to know how this site works.
P.S.: by the way, why are us the ones who have to learn English and not the English speakers who learn other languages?

It's a bad idea to use "Abweichungen" as term for "deviations" in the way deviantart uses it, because in german, and perceived as a german person it sounds really awkward. Just saying!
Personally, I'm not sure what to think of the concept. The majority of the community communicates in english, all down to the site news, so utilizing its full potential would mean that editors of dA's official news would have to do multi-language releases of their articles too. I mean, I personally think it's kind of pointless to have an UI in your own language, but the site's community and content still majorly remains english. I suppose it'd pose minor aid for those who don't know english well enough to navigate the site in the first place.

Omg I can't believe some of the ridiculous comments on here a wonderful idea I say! Some people are like noo english must be the only language blah blah blah. WELL English isn't the most widely spoken language. Chinease Mandarin (by a lot) is, then spanish... Then English. SO if it were to happen it wouldn't make much sense for it to be english anyway. Language options would be a wonderful idea. And why should other languages have to throw away the past.

I don't know anyone who speaks any Chinese. I know 2 people learning Spanish and from my friends and known people about 15% doesn't know English at all or it's too low to communicate yet even those people can navigate trough English spoken sites. Of course, plenty of people would get easier to navigate but by my about decade now experience with websites Russian is closed society everywhere, Middle and South Americans speak their native languages despite anything, most Polish will keep talks in their native language, only few Japanese and Korean people will try to assimilate/blend with their (mostly broken) English, Chinese are too proud to speak second rate capitalistic language such as English ([sorry for sarcasm but I actually met Chinese people who acts that way and were grave serious]unless, those people were raised in USA/Canada/UK) even if they know it.
IMHO it will ease access of very limited group of people out there and it will only provoke most to break unity of the community over thinking along lines of:"since this site is in my native language why should I care to pay attention to other people and their languages? hurray for my nativity". It happened like every single time when site was translated into nay group of languages. But I do respect your point of view despite it's too optimistic in my eyes.

Yeah but if theres no language barrier cause they can translate everything then it wont ' break unity of the community' it will create a worldwide community surely - where we can chat with whoever. Even if you don't know anyone who speaks it I do. Several in England anyhows, and doesn't change the fact that 3x the number of English speakers there are Chinese speakers. And on my computer I can translate any website for my school research I often use german, french etc website by translating the page or using the famous dictionary. I like lots of different languages and thats never going to change for me. I personally think it a bit selfish for people to be like all language should be in english but that is just my opinion and I just like discussing on the internet anyway ITS FUN. But yeah I know what you mean when people are too proud to speak other language bit annoying, but tbh the majority of english people are like that anyway in my age group, not the older generations always though. xD

And ... your concept doesn't have anything to do with the other content of this website?
I mean... do they also have to translate the news, journals and everything related to DA ?
π: 0 β©: 1
almendro In reply to kaztle-8 [2012-11-14 02:51:42 +0000 UTC]
not, only de UI. At least I understood in this way.
The only related content that I will found very helpfully to be translated is the HELP and FAQ pages. I think it can be plausible that ALL deviant can collaborate to translate the UI and Help and Faq
The other related contents I thinks will be a hard work, not impossible, but hard. Nontheless at least 1000 collaborators o volunteers of each "language community" make daily translations (very rare that can be real).
One more time: forget my poor english.

I agree totally this idea. I know some people who are lost on DA pages because they don't understand what is written. Even if DA is not enough powerful to translate all, which would allow non-english speaking ( That kind of person really exists) to show their work and communicate, it wouldn't be a luxury to translate ribbons, buttons and titles.

Tahiriasin In reply to ??? [2012-11-13 19:33:43 +0000 UTC]
The idea is nice, but I don't think it's what this community needs. We are already here, all talking and exchanging art in English and we're doing fine. And non-english speakers can also learn by reading and writing comments, so it's helplful even in this area. Besides, you don't need to speek like native-speaker to admire other people's arts. It's not necessary.

I like the concept but I'm afraid of the result of this because it could be very negative.
I'm German and in Germany you HAVE to learn English from the age of 7 or 8. Thanks to dA my English is the best one in my grade and I think it should stay like that. I mean there are enough groups out there for only e.g. German people or polish people etc.
Of course no one can speak English fluently, neither do I but people can always TRY and if they really can't do it then it isn't bad because not everyone is good with languages. (Heck, I failed 6th grade because I got an F in English and French).
For me dA is a international website on which everyone should at least try to write in English so that everyone can understand it and when I'm on dA I THINK in English, it all goes automatically for me.
Anyway, I saw some people raging about how "forcing English on other people" is bad. I mean, in most countries of Europe you HAVE to learn English in school no matter if you want to or not. Another point is that English is influencing the world more and more.
I can take myself as example: it sometimes happens that I talk in my native language and suddenly I don't know the German word for something (but the english word) so if I say the English version still everyone around me understands me because people here get used to it. Nowadays there are so many words in my native language that are English and it gets more and more over the years.
So in my opinion I think it will result negatively and shouldn't be done.
(I'm sorry for any grammar or wording mistakes ^^" )

Hey, I agree with you. I live in Germany too and my English improved so much since I am active on dA. I like it being an international website. English is the international language. You can't do anything about it. As for me, I enjoy it very much but I understand that many who aren't good at it are more or less helpless on this site. I think the idea of making only the main buttons and the helpdesk in other languages is okay. If you don't want it in German for example, you can switch it back. I still believe most of the deviants will even write their descriptions in English as it's still the major language. I think too that it will split the community more so I don't know if I support this completely. I got to know many nice people from all over the world on this site. Setting languages will most likely divide us in sections. That's my main problem with this. :/
(Macht Dir hoffentlich nichts aus, dass ich das nur auf Englisch geschrieben habe? XD)
