Description Having seen that dA is a Worldwide Art Community I am a little surprised that dA hasn't got any Language support for the major ones.

This is just a Concept of how people could easily change their language to suit them better.

It would change the main menus on the site, things like the deviation titles can't be changed really but for the hard coded links and buttons I don't see how these can't be edited.

Lovely idea. I think it would make DA more accessible to a larger international population. You don't need to share a language to appreciate art! That's one of the greatest universal aspects of art! Imagine if we told Picasso or Toulouse Leutrec or Van Gogh they weren't allowed to share their art in their native languages...

Nice idea but I think English only is better.

Spellsword95 [2012-11-13 18:42:49 +0000 UTC]

I disagree.
If they make various translations, users will start to write in their native language in comments and deviation descriptions. Do you also hate when someone posts long description in, for example, Spanish and you have no idea what is written there? Using Translator is VERY bad option.

English is worldwide language used almost everywhere and it shouldn't be changed. Don't split us apart, dA.

I'm pretty sure the idea is to change the language for an individual user so that they can understand things better if English isn't their native language. Not to change the whole language on the site. It won't automatically convert all of your comments to German, you nitwit.

That probably isn't going to happen. A while ago I put all my effort in trying to convince them to allow diacritics in deviation titles so that people can write titles correctly in their own languages, not different writing systems like the Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese or Arabic script, just Latin letters with different marks like "Â". They found every possible pretext to reject it...

I am absolutely against the language options.
We should work towards getting as many people on the world as possible to have a language to speak in common, to not make communication once you leave your own country so difficult (which can lead to serious problems). I think that English has been chosen to be this language and so we should support this.
Forcing people to work on understanding English if they want to use this website is a very good way to motivate them to learn English. Allowing different language options only motivates people to becomes captives of one language and with that they put an extra burden on others and sell themselves short.
Besides it would probably increase the amount of public communication taking place in a 'non-public language', which is something that could easily go hand in hand with forms of cyberbullying and exclusion of certain deviants. You might think this isn't a serious possible problem, but it is. I've seen a site been shut down mostly because it was meant to be an international site and people kept on spamming the forum with non-English topics.

Definitely agree with you. I speak three languages. I've discovered English for me not long ago, but think, it is the best option to get in touch with people world wide. One language for all is the best choice.

With each new language it becomes easier. I speak native Polish and German. English I started two years ago. But I think, it was not the last language. I would like to learn another one, maybe Spanish. I can speak from different languages some basics. For example some african languages, as I was living two years in West Africa. But English is the best When you search for certain information, you always get the best results with English.

ForeverTeaTime In reply to K-A-A-Scott [2012-11-27 15:04:15 +0000 UTC]

I agree that after the second language, every next language becomes easier to learn. As you start to see patterns, in grammer, the way sentences are constructed and word-use. The more languages you know, and the more words you know in those lanugages, the easier it becomes to conduct the meaning of new unknown words (in new unknown languages) from what's already stored in your mind.
I also agree that English is the best when looking for most information, as it is the most international language, so the largest amount of people can publish in it and it is attractive to do publications in English as a fairly large amount of people will be able to read it.

I wish you good luck with trying to learn Spanish. I hope it will work out, as I think it is quite differnet from German, English and Polish (languages that have some things in common, or so I suppose). But then again, I think African languages are quite differen too.

i CAN'T agree more!!! as a young french girl, iknow how can some persons becme jerks because they are lazy to translate, and putting different languages is really not a good solution!! it irritates and really atonish me to see that some persons who have the same age as mine are lazy to translate!! sometimes, on websites, i write kilometers of english texts, and they don't even try to read it: it's "translate plz?" or nothing! well, i can tell you they can go fuck themselves, i never help those persons.immediatly when i came on international websites, i understood how important was english and i immediatly worked hard to lean it correctly, thanks to my fans and frinds comments, and english texts. before, writting a decent text like this one was impossible for me, but when i saw that there was german, spanish, italian and all other different persons like that i realised i would never be able to communicate if i didn't speak englsih, seing that it was the only language everybody knew. frenches are really nes of the most laziest persons in the world: they make FRENCH chats and FRENCH accounts, they say it and refuse translating anything or saying other things than "thank you" or "you're welcome" and it really irriates me wheni know they can leanr english, wich is a very easy language like i said it to MamaELM and really quick to learn; also, in France we learnt it since we were 8, and know younger ones since they are 7! and also, it encourages them to only stay with groups of people who only talk their language, a thing i totally disagree with. we MUST try to communicate with other in english to progress, or we never would! it's not a dead language, it's an alive one.

Very good points points. It's already somewhat irritating when some users use their almost only their native language and you have to go to google translate if you want to understand (I remember this time someone came to me talking Spanish...). I understand a little chatting with someone with the same mother tongue, or an occasional literature piece on your own language, but not really anything beyond that on an international website. (heck, I often speak English with fellow Finns just so others could understand too)

I speak from personal experience when I say using foreign languages eg online helps you learn it. I've been exposed to multiple languages since I was a kid, and even if I can't speak a dozen languages, I still can recognize them quite easily and understand a few words even from languages I'm not familiar with.

Even if having some basic things translated into some major languages besides English would seem like a good idea at first and help some users to get started with this site, on long run it's no good.
This world is turning smaller and people have to be able to communicate with foreign people sooner or later in their life. And you learn a language only by using it.

On other hand, things like #InternationalFAQ need more recognition. Stuff they have translated can be difficult to understand even if it was on your native language, yet alone a foreign one.

long reply is long.

You are right, that group does seem like a good idea.
Because I do believe that when you've tried but are truly at a loss, there should be some kind of help in your own language available.

Besides that, I agree with your comment completely.

That is a bullheaded and selfish thing to hope for. Also, assuming that if a worldwide language is adopted, we would be required to speak English of all things is just foolish. English is one of the hardest and most annoying languages out there.

First of all, I don't see how it is selfish. Refusing to learn a second language is what seems selfish to me.
Besides I figured English, since A) I think much has already been set in motion to try to teach as many people as possible this language as a second, universal, language and B) I didn't find English difficult at all to learn.
May I ask if it was your first language? And if not, what was? Also, what language would you prefer as a universal one? What language do you consider both single and extended enough?

DarknessRequiems In reply to tayleaf [2012-11-13 16:45:27 +0000 UTC]

whuuut??????? wtfff orry for interruping this, but seriously english is one of the easiest language people can learn!!over the fact USA is, or no, was one of the most influent country in the world and that it decided with, i guess, other countries to choose english, is because it is really easy to learn it!!there's almost no verbs to learn, only around 100-150 exeptions i learnt in one or two days; this is really a easy language seing others like mine (french) or german, or chinese for exemple. seriously, learn REAL difficult languages, learn french, for exemple! you'll see what is a difficult language. so anyway what is your own language, people need to learn the interntional language wich is english, anyway what you think. in holidays, or for a trip, you'll need to speak it so that a maximum of persons understand you. that's all.

errrr
no
initiation..i don't know i tried to translate something in french xD
no, it's more like..we don't really LEARN things, teachers make us ear the language, make us speak a little, shows us grammar's base of base, like how are the sentences, the few words that everybody knows, so when we arrive and really start learning it, it's natural, it's not a big surprise becausewe already eard, saw and wrote this language, and inconsciently we learn faster than someone who never heard about the language before. it's the same for school; in France, we are one of the only-or maybe even the only- country wich make children start school at 3 years; they go to a special school for children(the maternelle in France), so they already learn and take the use to be with others, play with others, the things they musn't do, they learn to make things in groups, they learn how to take a pen, how to make, for exemple, circles, squares etc, they learn how to count and learn all of the letters, the sounds, some even know how to read when they are 6 and they don't even have to go to their first grade, they directly go to the second one. so when they arrive at their first grade, they already know how to count, read some letters, they aren't really afraid of allof those things and they inconsciently learn faster too. because they have the habbit doing it. i think my history teacher told us we were the only country which children started school at the age of 3... or maybe some country make children learn somethings, but it's not a real school like it is in France. i think it is a really good idea to do those sort of things, because children aren't lost or sad when they start the "great" school.

That English is a main language has started with Great Britain being really, really GREAT because of it owning most of the landmass via colonialism. USA is a result of this, nothing more.
I learned English pretty fast, I'm able to learn most languages pretty fast because of my talent lying there.
My sister on the other hand, has the hardest troubles with English, she finds this language illogical and irregular. This is because she has a mathematical talent, unlike me, she has no troubles with Latin. Why? Because Latin is a mathematical language and also very regular, because there are only few exceptions.
Yes, related to other languages such as Japanese, Chinese, German, Russian, Hungarian, etc. English is a fairly easy one. But not for EVERYONE.

Sincerely
