Description
Having seen that dA is a Worldwide Art Community I am a little surprised that dA hasn't got any Language support for the major ones. This is just a Concept of how people could easily change their language to suit them better.
It would change the main menus on the site, things like the deviation titles can't be changed really but for the hard coded links and buttons I don't see how these can't be edited.

Nice suggestion!
How about a feature that allows you to search for members by country?

There actually was a button for a long time in which you could find artists near your location. I almost never used it and didn't keep up with it when DA's buttons got rearranged because there was no one near me for miles. (I lived in the middle of the country at the time.) It might still be there if you do a little searching.

Oh. That is very sad. I'm actually in an area where I might be able to find artists close to me. Oh well.

I think it's may have sence with FAQs and settings, but there is no need to translate all DA to many languages. My native language isn't English, but I don't see any reason to spoke on Russian with othen users. English is international language, and it's fine, we can improve our knowledges

LOL If people who volunteer for translating get FREE forever-lasting premium membership I volunteer straight away.
Also, if there was a multitude of languages, having a search box would be most helpful.

This is a very good suggestion! I think it could help a lot people who had difficulties with English language.
Honestly I like writing and communicate in English with other Deviants, even though my English is not perfect at all, and my comments are a bit messy sometimes >_< ...I have no problem with dA having English settings, FAQs etc...once you got used to it, it becomes easy to understand. Furthermore, as other Deviants already said in comments, dA helped me so much improving my English! I like reading journals and watching video interviews
On the other side, I understand that many people (expecially younger ones) may find a full English website to be a bit difficult to use. I think a translation tool would be useful to understand dA settings quicky...this would encourage more artists to join the site, even though they don't speak/understand English at all

I wouldn't use this to be honest...I like that the side is in english! I have learned here much more english than in school haha
and if you realized this language support for let's say german, spanish and french, there would be a lot of people who complain about why their language is not supported...

This is a good point. Especially since there are very many languages! Hindi and Chinese would be important languages to include, too, since there are many people who speak those languages. Then Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Italian...and the list keeps getting longer. How can you decide which languages not to include?

Hm... I'm from Ukraine, here and in Belarussia people simply understand their own languages and russian. At schools and universities we have different levels and teachers who teach English. English here had become popular maybe 10-15 years ago so many adults don't know it at all (like my family). I think that this option will be useful for some people (google translate doesn't work as good as it should to)
btw, only on dA I have any practice with third language for me (:

Congratulations, nice idea!
But in general... is there really that much english to deal with?
Sure, sometimes there is a word or phrase i'm not familiar with but in these few cases there is google and [link]
So... nice idea but in my opinion unnecessary.

dA only in english means there is at least one language common for all deviants. And speakes of not supported languages might feel left on the side track and go away from dA. I would if my language would be among the ones ignored.

Different languages... I am not sure it's needed. What I would like to see is a spell checking option.

Many browsers have spell check built in already, though. I know Internet Explorer and Firefox do.

True. The problem is that I am French, so I need the French spell checker more often than the English one, and switching is a bit cumbersome.

Lol! I believe this! I've always had trouble spelling English, but when I studied French, my English spelling became absolutely atrocious! It was like everything was half English and half French.

I have some other dictionaries on mine, and I think it's pretty easy to switch them. :/ I rarely use them, though.
I do think dA should have some sort of language options. English might be the most prevalent, but not everyone knows it, or at least not enough to navigate a site like this.

TRlCKS In reply to cordefr [2010-09-06 10:26:17 +0000 UTC]
Well browsers like Firefox with the "Check Spelling" turned on work fine on dA, this was more for people who prefer to read sites in their own language, everyone else would see the site normally, it would really only change the site links etc.

No, they don't. I am French, so Mozilla gives me a French version, with a French spell checker...

Nice idea, but since dA is an international artist community we should all use english. Makes it easier for all of us. I mean, everyday i get tons of stuff written in various foreign languages into my message centre and it really bugs me. Maybe this sounds rude, but when somebody is able to use the internet to participate in a community like dA, he/she should be able to use the english language!

TRlCKS In reply to tic226 [2010-03-04 01:02:42 +0000 UTC]
But for millions of users that don't have English as their first language you think that's fair?
This is really a helping hand with those users that would find it difficult to read English, also if people could browse more effectivly we might not have so much miscats and the userbase could double or even more you don't have to look far for that just look at facebook where you can pick your chosen language, I do understand you but how much art is written in different languages?

English isn't my first language and i think it's fair that dA is in english only... in fact by dA i learned more english than in school ^^
And don't compare it to Facebook... because this is an other thing.

Kind of agree. This could discourage people from learning English (always handy) and at the same time fragment the community. As an interface tweak though, it is brilliant.

grrrttt damn you..
I thought this was a script, and was like ohh cool that would be handly.. But noooooo its not a script
Great idea hun. Im also a little shocked dA hasnt made something that translates.
So even if people comment to you in say Japanese, when you read it, it will be in English.
And when someone from Japan gets a comment in English, it will show as Japanese, so everyone can understand everything
That would most dev make things easier on those who dont know English, or very little of it.

Vanshira In reply to Tepara [2012-11-13 17:17:06 +0000 UTC]
Cripes, I wish comment translation could be a thing, but I think that would just be too difficult to implement. It would be nice if I could, say, tell a purely Spanish-speaking deviant in their own language that someone else had stolen their art, without relying on Google Translate to not butcher my meaning.

TRlCKS In reply to Tepara [2010-02-09 09:03:53 +0000 UTC]
Yeah had to put the "Concept" in there otherwise people would think this is a script.
I might ask a scripter to help make this happen tho, im not sure how hard it would be for a simple greasemonkey script etc.
So watch this space!

A little strange really.
