It is believed that the Rodan were able to within prolonged exposure to Hedorah's presence due to their specialized respiratory system, which was able to filter out and neutralize the toxic spores before they could take effect, and their insulating scales, which acted as an effective energy barrier against Hedorah's intense radioactivity, including providing limited defence against its crimson ray and digestive emissions.

Hedorah was much slower and less agile than Rodan, and its soft body tore apart easily from Rodan's attacks, but its incredible regenerative abilities, enormous mass, and multitude of adaptive defences more than made up for this, leading to a near-equal match that had not slowed significantly even several days after their first encounter. However, by the final day, Hedorah had lost more than a third of its height and both Rodan were now more grounded, as they now resorted to faster and briefer hit-and-run tactics over the ruined landscape.

Even at the last day, it was clear neither side was close to conceding.
