Description An Onchopristis gets fished up by a giant carnivorous theropod... the legendary mega fish-eater of the Kem Kem Beds... Carcharodontosaurus!

That sounds right, yeah.

---

Mid Cenomanian (95 MYA), Morocco

Onchopristis numidus (Numidan bulk-saw)- a species of sclerorhynchid ray known from the Cenomanian of North Africa. A very large freshwater or brackish sawfish, it could have possibly grown up to eight metres, slightly larger than the biggest modern species (of which it is actually only distantly related). The genus is distinct in possessing barbs on its saw teeth, this species only has one barb per tooth, but other species of Onchopristis have a more variable number. Like modern sawfish, it probably hunted by thrashing its rostrum back and forth to incapacitate small prey, or pinning it to the riverbed with its specialized snout, navigating the clogged and murky waterways with its electroreceptory organs. Like many prehistoric cartilaginous fish, it is known primarily through its numerous fossilized teeth.

Carcharodontosaurus saharicus (Saharan [jagged/sharp tooth] lizard)- a species of carcharodontosaurid carnosaur known from the Cenomanian of North Africa. Estimated to grow twelve to thirteen metres in length and perhaps between six to eight tonnes in weight, it was one of the largest known predators to have ever walked the Earth. The genus is named after its huge, serrated teeth, which were likened to those of the great white shark. Similar to other carnosaurs, they probably hunted mostly sauropods, which were really the only definite herbivorous dinosaurs known from the time and region (baring a single footprint from a large ornithopod known from the Kem Kem). Another species (C. iguidensis) of similar proportions but with slight differences of the skull is known from the Echkar.

generic turtles- the Kem Kem has a lot of turtles... pretend these are one of them... maybe Apertotemporalis baharijensis...

---

For real though, I've seen somewhere around twenty to thirty drawings/reconstructions of Onchopristis being hunted by Spinosaurus, and that's not even counting illustrations that just happen to have Spinosaurus and Onchopristis together. It's probably the Tenontosaurus of prehistoric cartilaginous fish. Because I enjoy being contrarian, here is Carcharodontosaurus fishing instead, because just because you have no obvious adaptations for a specific lifestyle doesn't mean one cannot partake in that lifestyle, particularly fishing!

On the other side of the coin...

There actually is evidence of Spinosaurus hunting Onchopristis. A rostral tooth was found lodged in the jaw of a Spinosaurus. There was also an Onchopristis vertebra that had bite marks similar to Spinosaurus embedded in it.

There is fossil evidence of Spinosaurus hunting Ounchopristis, that's why it's depicted like that so much. Considering how diverse the kem kem fauna was, Ounchopristis was far from the only prey item Spinosaurus ate.

That Carcharo just hurted his mouth. That just isn't the way you grab a fish like this one with the mouth.

Considering that fish, even large ones, are fast-breeding and represent an easily replacing prey base, this is actually a good possibility.

For once Oncopristis actually gets shown as the gigantic beast it is.

By the way, please allow me to compliment you once more on that exquisite command of the colour palette you express so imperiously; I keep taking one look at your latest work and thinking "Well there's no way THAT isn't going in my Gallery of Favourites" completely defenceless against such exquisite taste in an illustrator.

I'm not sure that grabbing this particular fish by the nose is the best possible angle, but we can certainly agree that this particular angler probably doesn't have to worry about armchair strategists questioning his fishing techniques very often ... not for more than two bites at a time, anyway!

I'd argue it's possibly the safest way, it's main weapon is disabled, and now it can only squirm and suffocate/bleed out depending on the usage of the hands. Akin to getting a hold of snakes by their head, or grabbing your opponents blade

Well there's an element of truth there, though one doesn't generally grab an opponent's blade with your MOUTH!

Yes, but what about your tongue!

TrilobiteCannibal In reply to Libra1010 [2018-08-23 01:37:04 +0000 UTC]

valid point. but what about you significantly slower healing hands? a gouge in the tongue would probably be less permanent. Maybe charcharodontosaurs could afford to damage their hands though. depending on how they were used.

It IS an interesting question - which is the more expendable element of the dinosaur's anatomy?

Carcharodontosaurus decided that he wanted some sushi for lunch today.

Onchopristis however did not like the fact that Carcharodontosaurus was biting her face.
