Description
Something of my character Avice that I was working on before I made the move to New York. It has since been untouched because I can't work on it anymore. But for now, Avice has been trapped in this drawing unfinished. Even still, this is a feat even at the WIP stages, because this was done solely with the mouse. I felt inspired to do a painterly image instead of my normal step-by-step coloring style, and wanted to go for it with full-fledged out of controlled-ness.
Mainly, though, I wanted to do a picture before leaving for the School of Visual Arts that sort of... encompassed why I deserved being there. I set out with the purpose of doing something awesome. I don't know how close I really came, and it's even harder to tell since it's not even finished, but I feel good about it.
Ladies and gentlemen, now rip into it. I want to know everything you think needs to be done with it. I need to grow a backbone for this sort of stuff, as well, so lay into me.

first, the title and the pic match perfectly. All what i can understand in the title, i can feel it coming out Avice's "fall".
for sure there's a lot of work left, but the pose is stunning and awesome you're so brave to have done all this only with a mouse !!! hope you'll be able to get a tablet soon.
it makes me wonder when this scene happens in Avice's life : if it is when she had her wings wut off or if it is at another never-told event of her life / death ? Rita and Zelenn's stories "end" in a happily ever after way, but what about Avice ?

Hehe I will, i promise! I just got some commissions that take some priority over it at the moment. I do really want to get it done, though!

That almost looks like pastel the way it is now. There's a lot of softness and a few harder edges that make it work pretty well.

I am loving the leg the most. You have clearly defined the tension in the muscles. I only have two things to say about the piece. The ankle seems a little thick, it could be the picture though, and the bottom skirt is not handled the same way the top piece. It does not feel like it is fabric yet. I really love this. Are you going to be doing a painterly background as well? Or are you leaving it back?

Thank you!
I'll have to look at the reference again; a couple of other people have said that the ankle looks too thick, and I'll have to check up on that. Yes, the skirt is totally unfinished. I'm pining to get Photoshop back, but it'll be a little while yet before I can actually work on this some more.

Something about the thigh looks a little large, perhaps? But lovely work. I love the dynamic pose!

Thank you! <3 The thigh thing seems to be the general consensus, and I'll go about working that out as soon as I can get back to this. ^^

It turned out beautiful... before reading the description, I assumed this had been done using chalk pastels. It looks amazing!
I do think the ankle is a bit wide proportionally though, and agree that the thigh needs to meet the butt (or at least look like the line of the leg hits the hip at some point). But I still have no idea how you did this on a mouse.... it's incredible.

Aha, now that you mention it, chalk pastels would have been fun!
And thank you for the critiques! I'll look into fixing them when I get Photoshop back *is in PS withdrawal* lol I'm not sure how I cope with a mouse either... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, though.

Aie that's such a BEAUTIFUL pose!!! It's so full of motion and elegance!!! You're in New York now, eh? How do you like it there? Where abouts? The city, or Long Island, or?
I really love the colors you used in this one, and the movement of the hair. The arm jutting out towards the viewer there is really dynamic too!

It's expensive like whoa, FTW!! XD Thank God I'll soon be on a meal plan and getting some kind of job on campus (and there are some rat-hole places you can buy cheap food lol), or else this would get very pricey very quickly. LOL But talk about pricey, seeing the Little Mermaid on Broadway! XD Although I would LOOOOVE to. I guess you've seen it? I don't even know that much about it, but I've seen advertisements for it all over the place since I got here and I'm suddenly like, "oohh, I... I want to see it! T__T"

X3 That's incredible, but hey at least you're right there in THE place to be as far as opportunites go! Maybe you can find broadway discounts. Totally would be worth it. My friends from college live on Long Island, so this summer I took a trip out to NY for the first time in my life. We went out to the city and saw Little Mermaid, and I loved it. Though I wanted to see Grease with Taylor Hicks! TnT I LOOOOVE Taylor Hicks and I LOVE Grease! LoL I might have to go back there some time! But man, ja good luck with earnin' some dough! YOu could totally start taking commissions if you have the time! I'm sure you'd make a killing! If you ever do start up commish, drop me a line and I'll totally do some advertisin' for ya!

You are crazily and insanely sweet. <333 I've been wanting so much to open commissions, and it's been a little too tricky to try and get a work study job out here so far, so I've been seriously considering doing some kind of selling of drawings instead. Your offer to advertise is very nearly the clincher here; I will definitely have to see how much time I'll have when I start classes, and see how much I can charge. X3 lol And Paypal is... kind of confusing for me. If I could shoot you questions about it, I'd love you forever and ever.
Dude, how cool would it be if you could come and visit me for like a day on another trip you make out here to see your friends? I'm motivated to snoop around for discounts now. I'll tell you if I find anything like that.

ThirdPotato In reply to Trounced [2008-09-01 02:35:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh man, ja I'd totally do that! Just shoot me a note if you need help with paypal! It's free, fast and easy! You could always open up a few commission slots at a time if you need to; or only do weekend commissions or something like that. But ja, selling original art is always a great way to do it too, and a great way to save on space, and clear up some old sketches. Even selling collections of sketches via Lulu.com would be awesome. I know a few ppl on dA here who compile their sketches into booklets and sell them really cheap.
And dude, oh man how I'd love to fly out there again! I'd totally save up for another ticket, and we can make plans! It'd be great to meet a net friend, Trounced!

Oohh good! So you're having visitors to your new little home. I was totally worried you were dragging yourself home everyday after putting up with horrible and hungry customers and not bearing to face the internet scene!
Don't worry too much about WMT; I'm just all over it lately because we're on the last leg of orientation and there is truly nothing to do except stare into space, glassy-eyed! lol But once classes start I'll be pretty busy, and perhaps even not on until the weekends. But I see that you've posted again in our thread, and I thank you heartily! You've provided my afternoon's entertainment tomorrow, lovey.

The body arch is gorgeous *A* Really like where the colors are going too.
Though, watch the top of her head. While the rest of her is 3D looking in form, her head looks flat, which is very strange indeed! Another part to watch for is where her hips connect with her legs, some of the form feels like it's stretched too thin or missing.
And a small fix, but the back of her waist looks a slight bit thin. But only a little. :")
Those feet are fantastic, by the way, now that I'm looking at them *A* Probably one of the hardest parts of the body to draw, at least for me!
Great job overall though :"D

Thank you! And thank you for the in-depth critique. I appreciate it. When you say her head looks flat, could you give me a few ideas on how to bring it out a bit more and make it look more 3D?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
xandrei In reply to Trounced [2008-09-01 02:39:08 +0000 UTC]
No problem :"D
I want to say that most of it is from her eyeline and above. She's missing a bit of forehead, which makes her whole profile seem like it's flatter (even though her chin, mouth, and nose are definitely looking natural.) The way her hair is coming from her hairline also makes it look strange. Since she's jumping in an upward motion (how it seems to me), gravity would be pulling the hair back, almost like it's been slicked down. One last bit, I feel like she is missing a bit of skull, with how the hair is laying. Check out some head construction drawings or even just some head anatomy and you'll see the head is much more round in the back. :")
If you want more reference on hair flow, I know I've typed in "jumping" into a stock reference place (like corbis.com) and found lots of ref that shows all that. It's pretty cool to see 8D

The feet... they rock my world. Look at you all over my art for my bone structure skill, while you, over here in your own world, are way better then me.
The ONLY problem I see is the thigh. The muscle is too big, or shaded so that it looks too bulky maybe. Yerp. It would help a little if you saw where it attached to the butt, too.

Thank you! lol I can't say that I'm way better than you, though. I mean it when I say I like the structure you can get in your drawings.
And I'll look into the thigh thing. That seems to be a problem most people see. ^^ Thanks, Gazzi!
