Description This is yet another pen and ink project. It is based on a figure I saw in a dream.

I wanted to portray the image of beauty that so many women strive to become--shattered, in the mirror.
What the figure represents is the result of self-loathing and the constant torture that so many women around us endure.
It is what their bodies come to look like after their irrational physical conditioning to become what our society has come to call "Beauty", thus the title.
You'll also notice the slit wrist...this was my attempt at emphasizing the sadness and depression that accompanies a woman's inability to become an image of perfection that cannot be acheived.

I hope you guys can appreciate the meaning as well as the art.

i hate it when other women try to be perfect. just because the supermodels look 'pretty', doesn't mean it's real. it's all makeup, plastic surgery, and photoshop. i hate it. anyone else starting to notice how more and more celebs are dying earlier and earlier? i've given up trying to look like that. if someone doesn't like me for who i am, then leave. plain and simple.

That's a picture worth a million and more words. To be thin is to destroy your body, break it down to it's last molecule. Some girls don't know that beauty is not in the physical appearances, but in the mental and social.
I'm the girl who was always teased because I was 'unpretty' and 'ugly' and always fought back, but it appears that even though beauty in society's eyes is that of skinniness and lack of healthy fat and muscle, it's the girls with said healthy fat and muscle that will survive longer.

Thank you for uploading this picture. It makes me feel so much better for myself, and I know it will for other women and men too.
It's an excellent piece of work, you must be very proud.

this is so true...

I was like that before and amm still. I'm not tall, nor skinny, I don't have perfect skin, I have big breasts and very wide hips. And people have called me ugly since kindergarten.

Now that I have found someone who really thinks I'm gorgeous, pretty, sexy and like a model, I've goten happier. I don't even want to lose weight anymore... Earlier I tried to eat only one or two imes a day. No breakfast, only dinner and something at evening.

I hate media. it makes all ''how to get into beach-condition'' and all. There isn't any. People are perfect as who they are and how they look. Even if they were 90 kg and 158 cm tall, or even their fet were size 43 and cup size A.

Please find someone to make you feel perfect again, people.

Wow... Dreams are so interesting and how the subconscious mind can interpret what we see... I love this interpretation of shattered beauty. What is beauty if it is but a reflection ?

Gives me the creeps. And you're right. Anorexia is our creation. It goes so far that anorexia was actually introduced in the east at the same time western influences became significant.

All but a few of the female friends I've had have conformed to this conditioning.

Anorexia is the most lethal mental illness. I think every advertisement for dieting is close to criminal.

Amazing! Your work is absolutely beautiful. What I love about art is that it can take a hideous image, and make it beautiful. It does the same thing as the media, but in an utterly different way. (I don't know how much sense that made...it's kinda late where I am...)

u know what, this picture,
it some kinda... tells people the fact that they have ignored a very important aspect of life: appreciation of beauty itself.

get it? i mean, most people consider beauty as an object. to be developed, to be gained, possessed and physically appear.

hence forgetting that beauty exists in everyone, in our kind acts and politeness, in our deeds and expression of love.

it's very hard to explain what i'm thinking.

what the hell...

that is so true. this picture is more than a drawing but an idea. im glad that somebody has the intelligence to realize what this 'beauty standard' is to doing to womankind. i actually read an article in marie claire about mauritania, where the beauty standard for women is reverse. the heavier you are, the better. women over there have hypertension and many other disorders, just as over here women have anorexia, etc. i think that having one beauty standard is idiotic.

as someone who has been here, for different reasons but starving nonetheless, all I can say is thank you.

this piece speaks to me, it has been years since I was anorexic, but it is still a struggle, and this shows so many aspects of the struggle so many of us go through

many portrayals of this disease leave out huge parts of the problem, but I don't think you did here, which I'm very impressed by. so thank you, for being honest, able, and most importantly willing to take the time to do something like this, it means a lot to someone like me, someone who has been that woman.
