Description
This is yet another pen and ink project. It is based on a figure I saw in a dream.I wanted to portray the image of beauty that so many women strive to become--shattered, in the mirror.
What the figure represents is the result of self-loathing and the constant torture that so many women around us endure.
It is what their bodies come to look like after their irrational physical conditioning to become what our society has come to call "Beauty", thus the title.
You'll also notice the slit wrist...this was my attempt at emphasizing the sadness and depression that accompanies a woman's inability to become an image of perfection that cannot be acheived.
I hope you guys can appreciate the meaning as well as the art.

Some women tend to look at just one extreme, being very large. They don't seem to see, however, that there is an opposite end of the weight spectrum that is just as extreme and more unhealthy.

Btw, I love how this figure doesn't have a face. Makes it universal and much easier to relate to as well as adds to the mystery and mood of this piece.

Wow. It's true... So many women strive, they go to the brink of death to look how they think others want them to. It's so scary sometimes, how insecure and self-conscious about their bodies.
Good job communicating that in your artwork.

It's truly sad that the pressures of women by society have been so played out and have become so cliche,(thanks a lot Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) because this image shows that the feelings girls and women feel about their bodies and the concept of beauty are real and scary. This pain is not something to be dealt with on an afterschool special or episode of Degrassi but in real art. Your work really shows that. Wonderful job. The detail and the hyper-reality of it is magnificent.

When I found your picture it stunned me at first...but then I know what point of view that you are expressing throught this picture...I can I dentify with your artist comments as the daughter of a recovered anorexic...We do have a lot of pressure in our lives to be perfect....but most often women are the hardest hit.....I am glad you showed that sruggle and made her look super thin beyond even what most anorexics look.
