Description
This is by far the best fly macro I've done. I think those are some sort of mite (reddish colour) under it's wings.Related content

It's all about asking beforehand, not after. Β
As long as you don't profit from the image. Β What was it used for, anyway?

I know what you mean. I think a lot of sci-fi/robot designers use insects as models or bases for their designs.

hi, what lens do u have? i just bought my self a Nikon 105mm micro one week ago. However, the problem is the focus area is so tiny. For example, i took some pictures of a fly, i only see details of the head and the rest is so blur. i was wondering how did u do your?? thanks

I have probably the Canon equivalent of the lens you have - the Canon 100mm. I've also used the Sigma 105mm and they're all very similar.
When you say "focus area", I think you mean "depth of field" (DoF) - ie what is in focus.
And yes, it is very shallow for macro. The reason is that DoF is related to focus distance and aperture. When you're shooting very close subjects, the depth of field is razor thin. What you have to do to increase the DoF is close the aperture down to around f/11. Even then it's very shallow DoF, but manageable.
Do you shoot full manual, or are you using some sort of auto mode?
If you want to understand a little more of my thoughts and tips on macro shooting, read this journal i made some time ago:

Wonderful shot!
The Macro world is my preferred venue. You make it 'op'. *apologies for using such an over used word... but the colors are vivid and distinct.*
Kudos!

Something has always fascinated me about flies ever since I befriended one. This picture is amazing. I love the redish orange eye amongst all the green

hey question how'd you get so macro-y on this shot if you dont mind sharing? which method did you use?

troypiggo In reply to dazedconfuzed [2008-02-10 11:41:39 +0000 UTC]
Not sure what you mean. Macro lenses allow you to focus much closer to the subject than standard lenses. IIRC I was only about 100-150mm from fly to front of lens for this shot. Use diffused flash and my typical settings are outlined in my journal post here: [link]

oh i have a macro lens and such but i'm still experimenting with getting closer and better shots and stuffs. i kno people use different techniques like reversed lens and the such, i guess i was just wondering if you did this too but i'll check out the journal now thanks.

Some photos of my gear are here: [link]
The shots with the flash bracket and off-camera shoe chord are more recent - I just got that at Christmas. I don't use the Lightsphere knockoff though, I was just experimenting with it in those pics. I use a 2litre milk container bottom.
The shot without the flash bracket is a 3litre milk container. I used that setup for the "large fly" shot Works fine, don't you think
